Crash; Restart; Saves Gone?
Hello again,

I was just playing through some more Walking Dead Season 1 after your advice fixed my previous issue Episode 2 Black Screen and I pretty much encountered the same problems as GotRedOnYou in this post.
Only thing I can add was that the game had crashed prior to this issue, and after rebooting Steam on my Mac and relaunching the game, it opened in non-fullscreen, with a different resolution, and with no saves listed.
I was all but done Episode 4 (about to start the last chapter), I hope you can help me as well so I don't need to restart this game again. Although, I must say I am a bit worried, as I don't seem to have a large prefs.prof file in the typical places...
Thanks, and hoping for the best.
Matt

I apologize for the inconvenience. It seems you may have changed the name to the wrong prefs.prop file. I noticed there are two inside your Telltale Games\The Walking Dead folder. The larger prefs.prop file will be the one that is associated with your playthrough of up to Episode 4. Please move the 9.6k prefs.prop file to a folder on your desktop, then please change the 125k prefs.prop.bak file back to prefs.prop, and start the game again.
Hello,
That is odd as I have not renamed any files in an attempt to fix this issue. The prefs.prop.bak files on my computer are from the previous fix and neither of them are 125k in size. Is there a chance that maybe you were looking at the wrong files, or perhaps the file might be hidden on my computer and I cannot see it?
Forgot to add that when I did as instructed, it reverted back to my saves from my issues with the black screen at the end of Episode 1 trying to start Episode 2.
Thanks again!
Matt
If you have anymore prefs.prop files or prefs.prop.bak files that you are no longer using, I recommend removing them from your computer, or placing them in a folder and backing them up on an external storage device, as they may also be causing this issue.
Will do.
Which of the prefs.prop files (or prefs.prop.bak) files that are on my computer is the one that I should use?
Thanks,
Matt
If you have numerous prefs.prop/prefs.prop.bak files, you may be able to tell by the file size, as well as the time stamp on the file of when it was last changed. Do you remember the last time you were playing and the game was working properly? If you have tried one prefs.prop file, and it is incorrect, I recommend changing that one to prefs.prop.bak, and changing the name of the other one back to prefs.prop. (You may need to move one out of the folder to do this, otherwise it may ask you to overwrite or rename the file to prefs.prop(2), and that wouldn't be read.)
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you, had a couple of days where I didn't get a chance to attempt this.
The problem with a prefs.prop file that is recent and good is that it doesn't seem to exist. The only prefs.prop (and their .bak associates) that are on my machine are the old ones from prior to my last restart and playthrough of Episodes 1 - 4. It's as if the last game crash I experienced deleted or wiped it off my machine. I did test the other files as suggested to verify this; none of them were the missing file.
I've re-ran the analyzer here, and uploaded the results to see if you can spot anything that might still be able to save my progress.

If it's a lost cause for me, what do you suggest is the best way to go forwards? Should I uninstall the game completely and reinstall it before I attempt to play through it again?
Thanks again,
Matt Campbell
I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, after looking over your support tool, unfortunately my recommendation is that you uninstall the game, and delete any files associated with The Walking Dead, then reinstall a fresh copy of the game, and play from the beginning again. I sincerely apologize I could not be of more help with your situation.
I even went back and tried Time Machine backups of the file with no luck. Definitely odd.
Thanks for your help!
Matt
You're welcome, I hope that you are able to enjoy the game!
