It's funny that you note that he's not as hairy as you pictured, because in the comics (Since not the same exact person does the artwork for each issue) He takes on different forms of hairyness. Some depict him with no chest hair at all, and others make him the hairest human being you could ever lay eyes on. It's interesting, to say the least.
