Status of PayPal orders - UPDATED 12/12 with good news!

EmilyEmily Telltale Alumni
For those eagerly awaiting news on the PayPal situation...

1) PayPal now works for the Sam & Max Season 1 set! Kudos to the guys at Digital River for finally figuring out what the problem was and getting this fixed for us. The promotion to upgrade from episode 1 to season 1 for $26 will be available in a couple of days. When it's ready, I will send out emails to all of you who contacted me about the problem to let you know. Thanks everyone for your patience while this got straightened out. :D

2) Buying with PayPal through the Culture Shock demo (or any of our other demos) is broken right now. If you are going to pay with PayPal, PLEASE do so through our online store. If you've already downloaded the trial version of the game you're purchasing, you can unlock it after the transaction is complete by clicking "I've already purchased this" and entering your order number and the password you created when you placed the order.

3) Some people were posting this weekend about PayPal being restricted to credit cards (which sort of defeats the point!) We just played around with it and found that this is not the case, but it is a little confusing. If you order using an email address that is NOT the same as your PayPal email address, when you get to the PayPal part of the transaction, you'll see a page that looks like this:

paypal.jpg

You've arrived on this page because PayPal does not recognize your email address, and your only option on this page is to pay with a credit card. To use a bank account (or whatever other funding options you have linked to your PayPal account) you need to click where it says "Pay Fast With PayPal" up near the top of the screen. Doing so takes you to this screen:

paypal2.jpg

Log in to your account using your PayPal email address and password, click Continue, and you should now be taken to a page that lets you choose from whichever payment options are part of your account, including a bank account if you have that set up.

If you want to pay by withdrawing funds from a bank account, you need to set this up as part of your PayPal account before you'll be able to use it in Telltale's store. Keep in mind that PayPal does not support bank account withdrawal in all countries (but there may be other options available to you, such as wire transfer).

I hope this clears up some of the confusion about PayPal purchases in our store. We are working very hard to make the process more user friendly and to fix the things that are broken. If your experience with PayPal is not working as described in this post, please let us know.

Actually, 3) does not describe the problem I had with Paypal. When I placed my order, I entered the same email address that I am using with Paypal, and I was taken directly to a screen that looked like the second one you posted. The problem only appeared after I logged in to my Paypal account. Right after the login I was greeted by a screen asking me to add my credit card information, although I had set up a bank account with Paypal before. That screen can not be skipped - Paypal will not let you proceed without adding a credit card. As others have noted, however, you will not see the add-credit-card-screen if you have sufficient funds in your Paypal account to purchase the game. So if you transfer your money to Paypal first and then to Telltale, you should be fine.

That's interesting, because we tried this ourselves and that was not the experience we had. We used Doug's account and all of his bank options were available.

    Are you in the US?

Another thought - if you enter credit card information, are you THEN taken to the area where you can select a bank account? I'm wondering if your bank account was still an option, but PayPal was forcing you to enter credit card information for some reason. (What PayPal does is out of our control, but it would at least help us to figure out exactly what's going on here!)

I'm in Germany. Paypal does support direct withdrawal of money from bank accounts here, I don't know why it's not working in this case. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what happens if you enter credit card information because I don't have a credit card.

    1) PayPal for Season 1 is still being worked on.
When do you expect it to be ready by?

I expected it to be ready two weeks ago.

I honestly don't know. This is in Digital River's court, and we're still waiting for it to be fixed. When it is fixed, we'll make an announcement so everyone knows.

    Ok thanks. :)

Aha, it looks like I'll have time to save some cash up before the PayPal payment option is all fixed and working... eeeeexcellent ;)

Hi Emily, any news for me, because as you know i have waited two weeks to buy the darn game, and i'm getting tired of waiting, i couldn't get the preorder first because of the paypal issue and the single episode didn't work either, and i haven't received any news about this in a week or why doesn't it work... Boxes used to be sooo much easier... :(

Nope, as I said above, we are waiting on Digital River for a fix to this. It's out of our hands. :(

Somebody at DR said he'd look into your case specifically, and I haven't had an update. I'll check in with them.

EDIT: Please check your email. :)

    Still working on it.

When this is up and running, we will be throwing confetti and shouting the news from the rooftops, don't worry. ;)

So I bought the episode 1, tried to pay for it on Paypal, site crashed after it had accepted payment, I'm sorry but WTF?! I'm in UK... If the site has crashed after taking my money, can I please get a refund?! I can't afford to waste $10.29 and not get anything for it.

    Hi Rich,

Of course you'll get your game! We're not in the habit of taking money from people without giving them anything in return. ;) (Or, if you want a refund, as I said on the other thread, that's fine too.)

I looked up the email address you have registered with the forum and do not see any orders for that address. If you used a different address, please send it to me in a PM so I can look you up. If you used the same address to place the order, then it looks like the order didn't go through anyway.

Could you please take screenshots of the PayPal screens you're seeing (you can black out any sensitive information) and email them to me at emily -at- telltalegames.com? We have not been able to duplicate this PayPal problem. I just tried it yesterday and was given the option to use my PayPal balance, my credit card, or my bank account to pay for the season -- all of the options that are linked to my PayPal account.

I understand that if you transfer the money into your account first, you should then be able to use it to pay for the season. But I don't understand why you're not getting the bank account option up front, when everyone who's tried it in Telltale's office has had that option. (It's a conspiracy theory, I tell you! :D) Unless it has something to do with the country of origin; obviously we're all trying it from the US.

Is it now possible to pay the season with paypal? What about me having payed for episode one? :)
  • edited December 2006
You can buy the complete season with paypal now. The upgrade offer will work with paypal too, but that deal is still coming soon.

    edited December 2006
Yup - I updated the original post with the most recent information. I'll update it again when the upgrade is ready. (Sorry, that might not have been obvious.)
  • edited December 2006
No problem, thanks for the info. :)

Thaks for the e-mail emily, I have now officially upgraded to the full season :)
Just a quick question: I noticed that the order number is different, will i have to re-activate culture shock?
I also might have to PM tobbaco about merging my info again as my paypal e-mail is different that the one i use for my telltale account (Im actually a little worried about this this time as my e-mail server that the paypal acct. is on seems to be autoblocking most commercial e-mails i get, and there doesnt seem to be any way for me to access that as the e-mails just arent recieved :( )

Anyways, Thanks again, I cant wait to play Situation Comedy

P.S.(to round off an excessively long "thank you" post :D ) I recently bought 3 dimensions of murder and i really like what you guys did with the series. I love the way the tool use paralels those used in the series.

EDIT: I just tried culture shock and it works fine, no reactivation required, thanks anyway

For those who've been waiting so patiently for the upgrade offer, I bring good news! Check out http://www.telltalegames.com/store/samandmax-season1-upgrade to upgrade to the full season for $26 (the cost of the season minus the cost of episode 1). I also made a forum announcement about it for your convenience.

    Excellent job, guys!
I was finally able to order the full season thru paypal. I must commend you all for your friendly customer service and flexibility in helping all us unfortunate foreigners (who couldn't use our credit cards to pay) enjoy the first episode while the whole mess got sorted out :)

What browser are you using? Did you have any trouble seeing the buttons when you bought the game initially?
  • edited December 2006
The button is immediately to the right of the input box, and says "Upgrade". Also, it is green.
  • edited December 2006
Nope no button since I bought the episode 1 I've updated to IE7
