Game won't show save files

I played walking dead season 1 again and after episode 4 game+pc crashed and I had to restart whole system and after that game didn't load save files anymore. https://www.sendspace.com/file/qfpuib this is my TWD support tool result. I tried some of the solutions which i found here but they didn't work for me.

Please rename the prefs.prop file in

    E:\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\default

to prefs.prop.bak to disable it, and your save files should be restored.

  • Still nothing :/ anything else I should try?

You can also try swapping that prefs.prop file for the prefs.prop file in

    Users/YOURNAME/Documents/Telltale Games/The Walking Dead/

and make sure to rename that file to prefs.prop.bak that is already in there, and see if your saves are then restored.

  • No it still didn't work. Just says 3x new game and when I rename those files to .bak looks like it just resets the game but nothing else is happening.

I apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately if none of the prefs.prop files seem to work when placing them in your save directory, and renaming them to prefs.prop, then your save files may have become corrupted. This can happen if the game was ever exited or closed during an autosave or loading sequence. Unfortunately I would have to recommend deleting your save files and starting a new game. My apologies for any difficulties this may cause you.

  • Well thankfully game is so good that it is no problem :) Thank you for help anyway!

You're welcome, I hope you are able to enjoy the game! I recommend disabling Steam Cloud saving for the game before starting a new game. (You can check this by right clicking on the game in your Steam library, clicking properties, and click the updates tab. Near the bottom of the page, you can uncheck the box to disable Steam Cloud saving for The Walking Dead)

  • Another one suffering the same issues I'm afraid: I played through season 1 and all the DLC with no issues, but now when I'm trying to import into S2 it's unable to find the save game files from S1. I've tried renaming prefs.prop and also copying the S1 save files into the S2 directory, as well as uninstalling and reinstalling after disabling Steam Cloud Sync but still no joy. Please find my troubleshooting tool export at https://www.sendspace.com/file/0k9faq - any help you can offer would be much appreciated.

My apologies, after looking over your support tool information, it seems that your Season One save files are inside the Season Two save file directory. Please make sure your Season One save files are inside your Season One save file directory, then start Season Two, click Play, then choose a save slot to import your saves to, and Season Two will automatically locate and import your Season One save files.

  • Hi Mike

I've just moved the save games back into the S1 directory (overwriting the save files in there) and tried again but the game is still "unable to find a save".

    Any other ideas?

Can you please clarify that you copied over both your save files and the prefs.prop file associated with the save files? Also, can you please clarify if when placing your Season One saves into Season Two, that you overwrote the prefs.prop file that was already in there, or did you choose to delete the older prefs.prop file?

  • I honestly can't remember, so I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game (clearing the \Telltale games\The Walking Dead Season Two directory before reinstalling). Sadly I'm still seeing the exact same issue (the SyncFs directory is recreated, containing \Data, \Meta and \Temp though no prefs.prop file is created - this may be because I quit as soon as I saw that Season 1 could not be loaded.)

My apologies, can you please run the Support Tool again now with your newly created file directories, and I will then be able to look at the folders, and be able to assist you further.

After looking over your new support tool information, it seems that your save file directory is using a network file path

    \SERVERNAME\users\YOURNAME\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead

Unfortunately the save file directory must be installed to a local drive on your computer. I also noticed you have a prefs.prop file in

    C:\Users\YOURNAME\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead

Unfortunately your save files will not be read from that location either. The proper file directory location for your save files and prefs.prop file is

    C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\

I recommend moving them to the \Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\ folder, as well as making sure both your Steam Client, and The Walking Dead is installed locally on the computer you are attempting to play it on. Then after the saves are moved, start the game and your save files should be restored.

  • Hi Mike

My Documents is redirected to a network share on my machine: this was not an issue with series 1. Is there any way to specify the save path through a config file for the game? I don't mind holding them locally, but the machine is on a domain where the My Documents location is controlled by Group Policy so I can't stop the My Documents redirect.

My apologies, unfortunately at this time, having the game and save files installed locally is the only way for the game/save files to work successfully.

  • So... it worked fine for S1, but it's broken for S2? (network setup hasn't changed at all)

Sorely disappointed if that's the case.

  • As an addendum I ended up building a VM off the domain and installing the game in there. All now works, but these kind of workarounds really shouldn't be required with a sanely programmed game.
