I always saw it as Shane trying to do what Rick couldn't/wouldn't, he thought he was helping the group by killing the prisoner. Obviously, you can also see this is when he's beginning to descend deeper into madness, but I honestly think he was doing what he thought was right. In his mind, Rick, Hershel and his family, and the prisoner were the enemy. In his eyes, they needed to be eliminated.
