Do you think that TV and Videogames are highly overated?
Yes they can be entertaining, but what do they really do for the person watching or playing them?
They don't actually help the person grow.
They don't provide any mental stimulation, cause the tv basically tells you what to think, and how to think it.
And think about all the time they eat up?
I once read a report that stated that the average American watches 4 hours of tv a day, and that by the age of 65, that that would add up to about 10 years of tv viewing.
Think about how much time a person could save if the eliminated even just one hour of tv from their lives?
And videogames can cause so many problems, because of their highly addictive quality, that in Europe there are actually rehab clinics; targeted to specifically treating videogame addicts.
Think about what would happen, if tv and videogames did not exist.
A person could read a book.
Learn to play a musical instrument.
Learn how to work with their hands.
Exercise, which helps keep weight issues under control.
Develop and improve their social skills.
And as a result of doing these things, feel more happy and fulfilled in their lives.
To quote Benjamin Franklin: " Does thou love life. Then be careful not to squander your time, cause that's the stuff life is made of."

Who gives a shit about personal growth and all that crap. Everything we do; work, society, relationships, entertainment is all one big distraction from death. And TV and video games are bloody good distractions.
What good does reading a book, or learning to play an instrument really do? Provide enjoyment? TV and video games cannot?
That addiction argument is also bullshit. People can get addicted to anything, people get addicted to putting on lip balm for gods sake. Also exercise, which you praise so greatly.
At the end of the day, people can decide to do whatever they want with their lives. Want to become the worlds best violinist? Fine. Want to play video games all day? Fine. We're all going to die, the sun will burn out, the universe will likely implode. Do you really think how humans conduct their lives really matters?
All people are doing is trying to release dopamine and endorphins in their brains so they can have a good time. However they choose to do that is fine, sport, TV, whatever. I'd like to know who made you the arbiter of what is a good past time and what is a bad past time.
If you are really interested in improving peoples lives, there are many more countries in Africa/Middle East that deserve your attention. A lot bigger problems over there than playing video games or getting a bit chubby.
Not for me, I'm a rebel, I do things my way - even in tutorials lol. Video Games have shaped who I am today, Video Games have been an inspiration to become creative and I've learned many things from them, such as sophisticated vocabulary - XD.
Well, what else are you gonna do when there's nothing to do but watch TV since everyone else is on their cellular devices? :x I just turn the TV on to help me get to sleep or help me when I'm doing my homework or writing stories, noise helps me relax, the silence terrifies me x.x
Not everyone has the same type of addiction, I know when to start playing and when to stop playing, really the addiction to games is more of a stereotypical gamer than an average gamer. I haven't had any problems personally with video games and yet I play them allot.
I do all of those things and still have time for video games, in fact, it's video games that help me feel happy when nothing else can, also, not everyone can read or play a musical instrument, but they can see what it would feel like if they could using a simulator - which is a type of video game.
You see so many healthy people who constantly play video games, if you play games yourself VS if you don't play games very often, your point of view/perspective changes quite allot. Sure video games can cause problems, but they can also help with allot more things! Everything can cause a problem in fact, reading a book can have the same negative influence on a person, playing an instrument frustrates some people, not everyone feels happy when they exercise. Video Games ARE in their proper place in this generation's society, why keep looking at the negative when you can look at the positive?
Well, I don't care. I barely watch TV and I'm not a gamer for sure.

I think video games are a good way to escape reality, I do it all the time and I'm pretty normal.
They're also multi-billion dollar industries.
But I disagree about them not helping people to grow. It depends on what you watch and play. I don't see why television or even games are, in theory, any different from books - they have the potential to be incredibly thought provoking, and honestly, how we are entertained, what we consume, and the culture encapsulated by media forms a very important part of our being. I mean, if it weren't for Victoria, I never would heard of the Slevsig-Holstein conflict, and then where would I be?
Overrated? No. They can be bad only if you don't do anything else but watch T.V or play video games.
No.
That is a lot of what my point was.
Of course, i spend maybe a hour or two watching television a week. I don't have time for that stupid shit. I watch Homide Hunter or fox news once in a while to find out whats going on. I have other things to do, besides waste time playing games. My nephew is four years old, and he constantly wants to come over my house because he wants to get his grubby hands on my shit. I laugh, and tell him the only game he is getting his hands on is a football.
Yes. They get shittier and shittier every year.
Every television show i ever liked they cancel, how many seasons of Grey Anatomy do we need. I MEAN SERSLY
I think everything is overrated to an extent. TV shows, movies, and video games are growing in popularity so obviously some people are gonna be saying how its overrated, but they aren't if you ask me.
I feel television and video games have had a lot to do with my personal growth. I'm an artist, an animator, a musician, a writer, a game designer, and a voice actor now. I got into those fields because of the movies, television shows, and video games I've experienced.
My love of video games caused me to become a video game journalist. It also caused me to want to learn how to program my own games, which led to me becoming a game designer. I really loved the video game soundtracks of the games I played, which made me want to compose my own music for my games, which led me to become a musician. My love for the animated movies and television shows I watched when I was younger caused me to become an animator. My love for the voice acting in the television shows, movies, and video games I played caused me to become a voice actor. I was never into books when I was younger, but the television shows that I enjoyed caused me to seek out novelizations that continued those shows, and that led to me seeking out other books, and then led to me wanting to write my own stories. My interest in comics also came from the animated adaptations of comics that I watched when I was younger, which led to me creating my own comic.
If I never watched movies or television shows and never played video games, I doubt I would have went into any kind of artistic field at all.
All things in balance. If the object in life (besides reproduction) is to finish with more happy times than sad times, how does it matter what caused the happy times? If watching video and playing games makes you sad, stop it.
Jennifer's post resonates with me, for an interesting reason. I was out doing yard work today. (In my area of the world, leaves are falling from trees at this time of year, and as a yard owner, it's my duty to gather them up so that they may be carried off to wind up in mulch somewhere.) When doing that, your body is occupied but your mind has free rein. I wondered what it would be like to have my own YouTube channel. What videos would I produce? Would anyone actually watch them? Now in real life, I have nowhere near enough time to consider that, but it was fun to think about. When you think about those who consume media, think about the ones producing it, too.
Yes and No, you are the one that give them a value, is not like they have a default value, actually i think there's no overrated things, so you're the one that decides if something is overrated for you or not
Lots of people find them very entertaining. Overrated as a medium no, I don't think so but individual movies, TV shows and video games can be overrated.
