Why I think Season Two is going to happen

edited December 2014 in The Wolf Among Us

Hi guys,

since TTG announced Minecraft: Story Mode recently, and a lot of us (big TWAU fans) were disappointed to the level of loosing hope regarding second season of this wonderful game, I still believe it is coming. Before I start listing my reasons, I want to adress one thing: I'm not a commercial game developer, level lesign and indie game development are my hobbies for over 6 years now, so I'm able to guess what devs are up to and what they have to deal with.

I'm mentioning that, because I have to tell you guys that making games is also a job, and it's not as easy as some of you may think. As far as I know, TTG has less than 200 staff members, which makes it rather small company. If they are splitting their teams onto specific projects, it makes ~50 people working on one game. It takes solid months to create enough base assets of the new game before they can properly start developing it. What I'm saying, is they were developing TWD, TWAU, TFTB and GOT at the same time for at least 1 year.

Now onto the actual arguments:

  1. Game Title. I don't know how many of you actually paid attention, but the full title of the game is "The Wolf Among Us: A Telltale Games Series". Yes, emphasis on the word series. TWD, TFTB and GOT also have this little word in their names, because TTG has the rights to produce multiple seasons of each game. That's why you never saw another Jurassic Park, because it's "Jurassic Park: The Game", it always was meant to be just a single product, not multi-season episodic game.
  2. If developers were so sure about TWAU being ended right here, they would announce it already. I mean, Adam Harrington did an interview with multiple TTG developers, they had chance to say that TWAU series won't be continued, but they didn't. To me, they were acting suspicious enough, I'm sure they simply don't want to confirm their plans because of one of the next reasons I'm going to explain.
  3. Bill Willingham is more restrictive than Robert Kirkman. TWD was easier for them to make, because it they were allowed pretty much whatever they want. Bill Willingham requires any kind of product set in Fables universe to be in canon with the comics. It means it's much harder for TTG writers to design a story without colliding with the comic books. A lot of you know that original TWAU story was different, devs had to change it because Bill didn't like it, and then they had to do a lot of stuff from the beginning, wasting some time and effort on the way. If I were TellTale, I would wait till Feb, since the comic book will be finished. Also, I woudn't announce Season Two before the story is going to be approved by Willingham, in order to avoid this situation again.
  4. Developers never make games they don't enjoy making. And believe me, as indie developer I can only dream about such wonderful community like you guys. Making game like TWAU is difficult without a doubt, but I'm sure they love making it just as much as you guys love playing it. They would have to be mentally unstable masochists to not develop a continuation at some point. Especially since...
  5. The obvious cliffhanger at the end of Episode 5. Faith's case is not closed, we all know that.
  6. Fables universe provides a lot more creative options to develop the story than TWD/GOT. TWAU has much more potential to be continued into Season Two, Three, Four, Five and even more, and I don't know any good developer who don't like being creative. I'm going to say one more time: there's only so much you can do in the zombie apocalypse. And there's so much zombie themed games out there, even if they are not as much story-driven as TWD, it's still going to get harder and harder to developer a decent, unique storyline. TWAU is quite unique on it's own, and it provides less limitations than zombie apocalypse does.
  7. Also, Devs like to surprise. It's always good to see people excitement when they see announcement they were waiting for so long, especially if it comes out of nowhere. I can tell you already, if TTG is going to confirm TWAU S2, it may happen pretty much any day since Mid-2015. Also, since they already made the first season, it means that a lot of game assets can be re-used, so it won't take as much time to develop a new season. Once they will be done with TFTB and GOT, and only TWD S3 and Minecraft will be left on the table, I do not see why they couldn't start working hard on the new season of TWAU and develop it in less than 6 months.
  8. Finally, TWAU was a big win. I'm sure nobody was expecting so many nominations, and recently it led TTG to winning some Studio of the Year awards. Devs said themselves, they are proud of the product, and they see all fans being excited about possible continuation. Again, they would have to be like really uber mega hardcore masochists to ignore that.

I think that's all I wanted to tell you as of now, pardon me for crapload of grammar mistakes, I was writing it at 2AM :> I hope at least one person on this forum is not going to give up hope because of the recent events.

Take care!

  • I agree with all of this. Also they would likely want more nominations and also money. There are also a ton of fans that really care a lot about this game. Also Telltale seems to have a type of pattern with games being released. So I believe it would either be released in 2015 around the first three or four months. Or in 2016. (Which seems like quiet a long time :( )

This is really reaching. Every game since The Walking Dead has "A Telltale Game Series" appended on its poster. It means nothing.

As far as I know, Telltale has never outright denied a sequel to any of their games. They don't want to rule anything out or burn any bridges.

Bill Willingham requires any kind of product set in Fables universe to be in canon with the comics. It means it's much harder for TTG writers to design a story without colliding with the comic books. This is more of an argument that a second season is less likely to happen.

Making game like TWAU is difficult without a doubt, but I'm sure they love making it just as much as you guys love playing it. I'm sure Telltale loved making TWAU. But they probably loved making all their games (maybe not Jurassic Park :P). They can't make sequels to all of them.

The obvious cliffhanger at the end of Episode 5. Faith's case is not closed, we all know that.

I always assumed that another Wolf Among Us game would ignore the first game's ending. I liked the way they left you wondering, left you to try to figure out what was going on. A resolution would ruin that.

Fables universe provides a lot more creative options to develop the story than TWD/GOT. TWAU has much more potential to be continued into Season Two, Three, Four, Five and even more, and I don't know any good developer who don't like being creative. TWAU is quite unique on it's own, and it provides less limitations than zombie apocalypse does.

That's a good point. Fables has a huge, largely untapped universe. And the comics are ending soon, so the fans will want their fix. Telltale could potentially fill that void. It's still not terribly convincing on its own, though. You could say the same of many universes. Minecraft will allow limitless creativity because its pretty much a blank canvas. I believe that Telltale will keep going after franchises that allow them to be creative. But with the way they're going, they have their pick of many franchises. I believe that Telltale will keep TWAU under consideration, but when something new and shiny comes along, TWAU is going to lose.

Also, Devs like to surprise. It's always good to see people excitement when they see announcement they were waiting for so long, especially if it comes out of nowhere. I can tell you already, if TTG is going to confirm TWAU S2, it may happen pretty much any day since Mid-2015. There's really nothing to respond to here. This point is pure speculation. The fact that Telltale hasn't announced TWAU yet does not point to them announcing it in the future. And the idea of Telltale working on three games at one time is borderline lunacy. They can barely handle two games.

A critical success does not always mean a financial success. I haven't seen any hard numbers to support that TWAU actually sold well. Telltale is a business, after all. They go where the money is.

Anyway, I don't know if a sequel is going to happen. It would be nice if it did. But there's little in your post to convince me that it's a sure thing. I've always said that I believe Telltale doesn't even know at this point whether a sequel will happen. They have enough on their plate at this point. It's much more likely that they're keeping their options open. It's best to forget about the idea for the time being. Even the most optimistic fan has to admit that another TWAU season won't happen in 2015.

  • I love holding out to the hope, I just think its not gonna happen anytime soon. I just really really really hope Telltale produces a DLC for this game. They have no excuse not to.

  • I just wish TellTale would just say yes or no.

No one wants to be left in the dark. Walking Dead Season 3 was announced before Season 2 even ended, so where is Wolf Among us Season 2's announcement of happening or not happening?

  • They may be waiting out for them needing something to do. They're doing like what Peter Jackson did for the Lord of the Rings. He made people wait years before The Hobbit. Also I believe if there was going to be no more Wolf Among Us, They would have said something by now. Also the ending could just be like some annoying movie and just end it like that. But once again I would like to point out it says "Series". Also it would seem like if it was just going to be one thing, Maybe they wouldn't have called them episodes, but instead parts. (Just a guess). To be honest, I think it will likely come out next year. And maybe some DLC to hold us off. I don't think they are going to just ditch all of us fans here :D

Every game, even with only one season, is a series.

Though sure, I'd like another season.

  • A good post.

Can't go off this at all, really, but Wolf has around 2,000 less reviews than The Walking Dead: Season 2 on Steam and it was released first.

To some of you it may mean nothing, but I doubt that any developer would throw any random words in the game title. Of course it doesn't confirm anything, but at the same time it does not deny the fact that gates are open.

As far as I know, Telltale has never outright denied a sequel to any of their games. They don't want to rule anything out or burn any bridges.

Yes, but some games are being made with the possibility of the sequel in mind from the very beginning, while others are not meant to be definitely continued from early stages of development.

This is more of an argument that a second season is less likely to happen.

I meant that they are probably going to wait a little bit longer before confirming anything officially, compared to the other games.

I always assumed that another Wolf Among Us game would ignore the first game's ending. I liked the way they left you wondering, left you to try to figure out what was going on. A resolution would ruin that.

That would be an excellent move from TTG.

A critical success does not always mean a financial success. I haven't seen any hard numbers to support that TWAU actually sold well. Telltale is a business, after all. They go where the money is.

Agree, but if TWAU wasn't a financial success, would they waste more of their money on production of PS3/PS4/X360/XONE retail versions aswell as promoting them?

Thank you for the great response anyway. My point is to keep up the hope, I believe in the strong possibility of the continuation, I never said I'm sure the game itself is going to happen, because TTG devs are the only ones who can be sure. In my humble opinion, if they are going to decide to continue the series, we're going to hear about it somewhere in late 2015. Even in the best scenario I'm sure that Season 2 is not going to be released before Spring 2016. But the truth is, this entire thread is just a massive speculation, as like I said, only TTG can be sure of what's coming. Again, thanks for your response!

  • I'll point out from that overly long but extremely informative blurb that Fables will end in March not February; cuz Fables 149 will be released in late February (Feb 18th I think) so unless they release Fables 150 between that date and the end of February, it will have to be released in March. Also because Fables Volumes 21 and 22 are being released in April/May (according to Amazon) further supports what I said.

  • Dude, you should read my fanfic The Devil Among Us on FanFiction.net; TheZorkij is and he's loving it atm!

    Bloody Mary is in it...

I'm trying like hell to hold out hope. I need season 2 And her to return

  • This beautiful thread needs to be up again. A little optimism is something we all could use these days. :)

  • i like threads like this. makes me not bitter in that stupid minecraft announcement. ugh telltale. you win, i can play TWAU many times! and not even a Walking dead game did this to me, i really hope that they actually do a 2nd season....
although the thought of minecraft being the game for TTG for 2015/2016 make me hella angry.
and i wont get my hopes up because i waited all night for that announcement and i got a fucking minecraft stupid mode.. so yeah, nope. lets appreciate TWAU for what it is and let it go :) i'll miss bufkin!
even if they did announce a dlc or a 2nd season, it wont be until 2017! which is WAY too long.
