Game won't start, just white screen (Steam)

When I try to launch the game from Steam, nothing happens except for a totally white window coming up...
I found some threads for other games where people had similar problems, and so far I tried running steam in administrator mode, verifying the game files, unplugging my controller, pressing alt+enter, and none of that helped. (Alt+enter puts it into fullscreen and the whole screen is just black.)
I also have the latest directx and graphics card drivers.

After looking over your support tool information, you should be able to run the game successfully. Can you please clarify if you currently have Steam Overlay, or Big Picture Mode enabled in Steam? If so, please Disable Steam Overlay (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3168263) and try starting the game again, and see if you are then able to start the game successfully.

I don't use Big Picture Mode, and I tried disabling the Steam Overlay, but that didn't help either.

Edit: Setting the compatibility mode to Windows 98/ME + running as administrator changed things a bit, although the game is still not working. Now I get a black screen with the mouse pointer and if I click the black screen disappears, and gives me two error messages:
First "Sorry, this account is not authorized to acces this game" and then after clicking OK "The application failed to initalize."
Both are normal windows messages and the top of the window says Telltale Games.
I also tried it on another computer and it worked there right after installing it.

I'm having the exact same problem. Disabling the Steam overlay didn't change anything.

@GeeRahts and @edwardsch Please also try unplugging any USB devices currently plugged into your computer other than a keyboard and mouse, and then try starting the game again, and see if you are able to start the game successfully.

  • No luck, same result. :(

I noticed your Steam Client file path is

    D:\Games!Steam\steamapps\common\Game of Thrones\

Can you please clarify if removing the '!' from the folder '!Steam' allows you to start the game successfully? Also, I noticed your game saves are located on another drive than Steam is installed to. If you create a file path on the same drive (D:) as Steam is located, does that resolve the issue?

  • Wow. Yes, that solved it. I didn't need to mess with the location of the save files, removing the '!' alone solved it for me.
I also got the 'you don't own the game' message, but restarting steam and waiting a bit before clicking through the first screen, like you said in other threads solved that too.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Pressing alt+enter switches between an entirely black fullscreen and the white window we talked about. It also plays the Windwos error ding sound. Other than that, nothing.

Please also try switching the game to Windowed Mode using the PC shortcut (Alt+Enter), and see if you are then able to see the game screen.

  • Same issue. Game runs in Windowed mode but I want to play this game in Fullscreen mode - which does not work for me (comp more than capable). So I would like to know if Telltale are trying to solve this issue for us (recommending windowed mode doesn't count as it's immersion breaking in a game that heavily depends on immersion). I bought the game day one - SO eager to play - but if this issue doesn't get fixed I would like my money back as I wasn't expecting "windowed mode only".

Please also try switching the game to Windowed Mode using the PC shortcut (Alt+Enter), and see if you are then able to see the game screen.

  • I took the liberty of checking your support tool data, and your problem seems to be probably the same as mine was - removing the "!" from the "!steam" folder solved it for me.

After looking over your Support Tool information, it seems that your computer is running below the minimum system requirements to run the game successfully. Where we require a minimum of 512mb of dedicated memory, your computer is currently running at 0mb of dedicated memory. Your computer uses an integrated Intel graphics card, which we do not recommend using for our game, as they tend to run under minimum specs. I recommend either trying to update your current graphics card's drivers to the latest version, and see if you are able to play, or try playing the game on a computer above minimum system requirements if you have the ability to.

After looking over your Support Tool information, you should be able to run the game successfully. If you were able to run the game in Windowed Mode but not Full Screen Mode, I recommend changing the game back to Windowed Mode using the PC Shortcut (Alt+Enter), then once in-game, try changing the game's resolution and graphics settings to a lower resolution, then try switching it back to Full Screen Mode either in the Graphics settings in-game, or by using the PC Shortcut again.

Please first make sure that you have disabled any anti-virus or internet firewall programs open and running that may interfere with the game's connection with our servers completing successfully. If you still experience the white screen, you can also try switching the game to Windowed Mode using the PC Shortcut (Alt+Enter), then once in-game, try changing the game's resolution and graphics settings to a lower resolution, then try switching it back to Full Screen Mode either in the Graphics settings in-game, or by using the PC Shortcut again.

If you are playing the Steam version of the game, you can also try Verifying your Game Cache, then restart the game.
