What is a ward?

I know what a ward is, but what I want to know is what exactly is their role when they are taken and in the case of when Ramsay gives Ryon to Whitehill what happens to the Forresters?

  • Essentially there a hostage. When families win wars etc they take at least on of the opposing family (usually a child as easier to control), so its not really an evil thing to do pretty much everyone does its supposed to negate any uprisings as there family would be instantly killed.

Wards often end up just living with there captors until adulthood or even more it leaves them pretty angry and confused, there is a book character whos ends up being friends and learning all the customs of his new house however always has a sort of internal hate for them

  • That makes sense thanks

Basically, they are hostages but they are treated as a guest due to their noble status.

  • Are you talking about Theon Greyjoy?

  • Ward is doing all the work so his master can be rewarded. Good example is greatest detective Lee Everett and Duck Grayson, his ward.

  • Wards are spells in Skyrim that create a magical barrier that blocks certain damage.

  • Dawn and Beth from the show lol

Wards aren't necessarily hostages, but they have a personal guardian that teaches them and is somewhat of a tutor or model for the ward.

Edit: For example, Eddard stark was a ward of Jon Aryn and so was Robert Baratheon. They weren't hostages, they were just under guardianship. However, wards can double as hostages, and in many cases they are for all intents and purposes are hostages, like Theon for example.

hardly think Ryon will be treated nicely as a guest but whateva'

  • They're similar to squires but usually Wards follow the Lord and Squires follow a Knight.

  • But if he isn't, then the rest of the forresters have no reason 'to toe the line'. That is kindof the whole essence of the ward. Its a two way street.

  • Maybe half and half. They will probably hit him and force him to do their dirty work but they can mock to the Forresters that "We are keeping him alive, you wouldn't want that to change, right?"

  • I agree that it wont be a nice vacation or anything. There will definately be hard times and probably some abuse.
How the rules Should work, and how they Do work in Westeros are 2 very different things.
