Well, all I can say is they better not screw this up (but most likely they will, I have a bad feeling they will makes some changes which will upset me and a lot of Fables fans).

  • Yeah same, the only way it will work if it is its own story. I dont want them to attempt to base it on the accaual comics just to fuck it up like most movies

  • If it's a standalone movie then it will probably include rushed story arcs from the first Volumes of the comics. I'll bet they will make the film be about and 'evil' that threatens Fabletown and the relationship between Bigby and Snow will be the side-story.

They'll probably skim through Volume's 1 and 2; then make 3 and 4 the main stories. the ending of 4 will be the film's ending, no doubt changed to a 'Happily Ever After'

The Volume 4 segment will probably have the Adversary be defeated or something...

I really hope they don't butcher this film, but we'll have to wait and see...

  • Yeah, but I think they're still gonna use the comics storyline though.

I mean could it even be called Fables if it is not the comics story? Sure, they can TRY to do what Telltale did with TWAU, but I don't think the lightning will strike twice (especially with so many uncreative things Hollywood comes up with these days).

  • I may be one of the few but I think a movie based off of The Wolf Among Us would be the best idea for a FABLES movie. It's already basically written and made canon for them and it'd be a great idea.

Whatever though, I am excited for this movie. Hopefully they won't screw up one of my favorite comics with it :P

  • I kinda have a feeling the Budget for a Fables movie may become too much loaded with special effects (hence driving up the budget) due to the following:

    • Bigby transformation cg
    • Any animal cg (Bufkin, Colin and any animals from farm where they don't use the real animal)
    • Any non-living entities (like the Wooden soldiers etc)
    • Action scenes etc (they generally involve some form of cg)

    and much more...

  • CGI is getting cheaper though...

I saw Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings recently and that film was loaded to the brim with CGI and it only took $140 million to make. That is kinda 'cheap' for the movie industry...

Plus they will probably limit the amount of animal fables that aren't necessary for the plot (so basically it'll be just Bufkin and Bigby as a Wolf)

I bet Bigby will only go full Wolf twice in the whole movie and it won't be for very long either time...

  • I think the Fables movie should be set during Fabletown's beginnings actually...

They could do a lot with Bigby not being liked or trusted. They could create their own story with other Fables that haven't been encountered like the Headless Horseman or Peter Pan etc.

  • TWAU movie would be okay, but I think there may need to be a little room for explanation in the movie telling what is what (come to think of it, I don't think they go into stuff about adversary except for the little paragraph in the beginning of he game).

I had no trouble since I read the comics before playing, but some people (that I know) kinda had difficulty understanding who these characters were.

  • It would be interesting if they do set it chronologically, instead of the flashback scenes which are used in the comics.

First half of the first Fable movie would be all the Fables in Homelands living peacefully (but Bigby is terrorizing the black forest). Around the middle of the movie, Adversary invades the Homelands, and Fables escape to the mundy world. The second half of the movie could show the events of Snow White and Rose Red fleeing and captured, and freed by Bigby.

And the movie can end with Snow Featherhop visiting Bigby and Bigby goes to Fabletown with them in his human form (after being cut with lycanthropy knife by Snow).

  • I found out about the game, and found out it was based on the comic.

I only started playing TWAU after I finished the main series Volume 4.

  • No I think they should just begin with Fabletown's creation, the events before that will be referenced in conversation and shown in flashbacks.

There's too much back-story to be able to fit in a main story for the film, cuz they'll be introducing everyone with a full explanation and that will take too long...

Not everyone who see's the film will be a Fables fan, some won't care for the comics. It's best to just make the back-stories short but informative enough and give the viewers what they want :/

  • I started reading the comics a month after I finished Ep. 5, but I already knew tons about the universe from the wiki...

  • Yeah, I agree. Fables has such a huge ensemble cast that the only way they'll give justification to all characters would be to do a series, rather than a compacted (and cut down version of) movie.

But currently OUAT is still running on TV. I don't know how many people will be interested in seeing two shows about Fairy tales/Fables (I personally don't watch OUAT), and I kinda doubt a studio will want to be in that market right now (it will be like splitting pieces of big pie between OUAT and Fables tv show).

  • I guess you're right. Though I guess there would be gaps of (maybe several) years between movies, since it would be centuries between Fabletown was first formed to the time when Volume 1 takes place.

  • It depends on how successful the film is and what they do with the plot...

Fables isn't like Batman or Superman; it's more like LOTR with it's huge cast. They have to incorporate everyone, they can't just focus on Bigby and Snow. Writing for a cast that big is difficult, then you have to find actors and film the scenes...

I will watch the movie when it comes out, but I think Fables should be TWD and have it's own TV Series with Bill Willingham or Mark Buckingham or even Shelly Bond at the helm to ensure it follows the comics as closely as possible!

  • Considering Once Upon a Time is an obvious rip off, I wish they would make a show so everyone can see how much better it is

  • Well, TWD TV series (while though I do like it) gets tons of complaints of diverting from the source material (from TWD comic fans), even with Kurtzman as one of the producers.........

Even GOT (The HBO series) have started to divert considerably from the novels from Season 4....

  • TWD comic is quite extreme with some of it's content though... The comic creator admitted in an interview that he had to divert some of the stuff so the show wouldn't get banned or censored :/

  • Well, I haven't read any of issues of TWD comics, so I wouldn't know.

Come to think of it, even Fables is quite graphic in some scenes (limbs being ripped apart etc), though I wouldn't put it as extreme.......

What I would be more concerned is, since they're likely to be cutting down on material, some of important characters would be cut out or merged as one.... That thought is pretty disturbing....

    Fables pales in comparison :P

  • I didn't know the comics at all, and I didn't feel lost. All I needed was a general idea as to why the Fables were in New York, so I could focus on the plot of TWAU. I didn't need any extensive world building to get into the setting and characters. Once I decided to check out the first deluxe edition I was more interested in backstory stuff like that, but that wasn't really necessary to get into TWAU.

I'm iffy about this proposed movie given the track record of movie adaptations of other media, but I hope it will be good. If there's even a small chance that it will be any good, even if it's not likely, I have to give it the benefit of the doubt as the possibility does exist. It does have good people working on it. Those thinking they should include every character and concept from the series have their expectations too high. I think the best idea is to work out a plot that encompasses only certain aspects of the series so they can focus on those and hopefully not mess them up. There's no need to throw everything and the kitchen sink into it when the setup lends itself well to all sorts of smaller scale stories.
