Optimism: Why a Minecraft game can make TWAU Season 2 a reality

Like many of the commenters here, I was not very happy with Telltale's decision to make a Minecraft game before committing to a second season of The Wolf Among Us. True, Telltale has shown such consistency in producing quality products that Minecraft could very well be a fun game that I enjoy. None the less I want more TWAU! And, from a business point of view, Telltale's other gaming pursuits aren't a nail in the coffin many tend to believe. I'll explain...

As we all know TWAU is a critical success winning many awards. It is also (and if anyone can provide a link to the actual numbers it would be appreciated) a commercial success too. It's recent introduction to the Xbox One and PS4 will only add to those numbers as well. Bottom line is TWAU is a profitable property for Telltale, and in business nothing speaks louder than an account which is "in the black." But you may ask, how does Minecraft factor in to more TWAU? Well the best example I can give you are the Transformers movies.

Some would compare those movies to what their favorite pet leaves for them to "clean up." Yet the studios keep making new ones because they're a cash cow. They make big bucks, and by big I mean billions of dollars. The oscar nominated movies, the ones with the great acting, great story, etc., truth be told many of those would never have gotten the funding to be made if not for the big blockbusters. Minecraft is just such a property. It's basic, simple and with all due respect one the biggest time wasters ever conceived... but it's also a goose that lays golden eggs.

Telltale's Minecraft game could very well give the company the big infusion of cash needed for them to expand as a business. As much as we TWAU fans have pulled our hair out because they chose Minecraft before TWAU season 2, all of this could turn in our favor. Telltale Games needs more employees and more capital in order to support all the projects they have lined up. We fans are left with a choice: either let Telltale's pursuit of other ventures quiet our voices or continue to remind them that they have a fan base out there willing to support what has already proven to be a profitable title in TWAU.

But that's just my opinion. :)

  • I think Minecraft will be good honestly Telltale doesn't half-ass their projects, they give a good effort, whether or not the property is a Golden Goose. To be honest, I have never expected there to be a second season of TWAU, though I wouldn't complain if there is one.

  • You're probably right. Telltale's attention to quality has a very good chance to carry-over with Minecraft. I'm just channeling over my inner 10 year old by whining and complaining for TWAU to continue above all else. ;)

  • First of all, you bring up a great point. Minecraft will be a great quick cash cow for Telltale which will allow them to expand their company and allow them to add more projects. The sad part is that Wolf Among Us S2 won't be coming till 2017 if this is the case :(

At the same time though, I'm not sure if money is the biggest problem in making a S2 or not. Telltale and Vertigo didn't sign for multiple seasons upfront (unlike Walking Dead and Game of Thrones), so getting a deal for a S2 may take some time. Its a good theory but at the same time I wouldn't bet on it because Vertigo would be downright crazy to turn down the rights for a S2 imo (considering how much more popular FABLES became after this game) so if they got the rights we would probably know by now.

So yeah, I think your theory is interesting and hope it is the case though please excuse me if I'm not holding a lot of faith (hue) in it. Still gonna keep my fingers crossed though :)

If you are implying that we would've had TWAU Season 2 had it not been for Minecraft, that's kind of a faulty assumption. Telltale could have also easily chosen other franchises to work with before making a second Season of Wolf Among Us. Walking Dead is kind of an outlier in Telltale's history, but Telltale games very rarely receive more than one Season - even the successful titles. Telltale generally likes to take on newer franchises to expand their fanbase - unless, of course, the game is a massive success like Walking Dead. Second seasons for any Telltale game are usually the exception and not the rule.

I imagine that Telltale did not initially sign on for multiple seasons like they did with Walking Dead and Game of Thrones because the Fables comics were far more niche and obscure in comparison to the former two franchises.

Of course, that's not a knock against Wolf Among Us and I would totally kill for a second Season. However, accusing Telltale of "wasting their time" with other franchises isn't really a healthy thought process. As much as I really really really really would die for a Season 2 of Wolf Among Us, Telltale generally tends to reserve multiple Seasons for their more mainstream and successful titles. (Prior to Walking Dead, Sam and Max got three Seasons as that game established a large fan base for Telltale at the time, whereas their focus is now more on mainstream franchises.) I wouldn't take it out on Minecraft as it just as easily could have been anything else.
