I am on my fourth playthrough, in slot three. I deleted my other save so I could copy this one to slot one, and deleted the saves in slots 2 and 3. It didn't work though
Does that advice still work if I add my save back into the game after backing it up? I don't want to lose all my choices.
Can you please clarify if this is your first playthrough, or if this is another playthrough on a new save slot?
At this time, the only wa… morey to stop the storage device error is to delete your save data from a previous slot. Below are a couple different ways to do this:
1) Delete the save data in save slots 1, 2, or 3 from within The Walking Dead. (You may wish to back-up the data)
2) If deleting the save data in the save slots does not resolve the issue, you will want to delete the save data from your storage device. (Go to your Settings on the dashboard, and click on Storage, then choose your storage device that you are saving on, select “games and apps”, then select “The Walking Dead.” In The Walking Dead scroll down and delete the Save Data. You may want to back-up this data)

I gave up because i couldn't get past episode 2 then did get to episode three and that's the furthest i've been.Seems to me from last few posts this is only an issue on your final game save slot same as me.Doesn't seem to matter which slot just seems more than coincidence that i have two full playthroughs on slot 1 and 3 including 400 days yet can't get anywhere with slot 2 deleted this slot twenty times and started again with no luck.Previous post seems to be having same issue on slot 3 with two full playthroughs.I'm adverse to deleting from dash again because will lose all saves if i can't get through it on any slot then.
If you are worried about losing your save games, you can back up your current saves onto an external hard drive/storage device, and then delete them from your console. Then you will have no save slots being used, and you will be able to play through the game without running into the issue.

Thanks Mike but won't that mean i will have to playthrough it again three times. When i already have two slots with 400 i have been able to use with season 2. Now i know what season 2 entails went for a playthrough on season 1 third time and can't play it.How will backing up those two slots help when third slot still won't work.It still means start again, plus if i had the time to playthrough three times again what if i had the same issue third playthrough.I would be back to square one with a backup the same.

I was only stating that if you wanted to do another complete playthrough, that you could back up your current data, and then play through Season One with no problem, and import that particular save slot into Season Two. Once you have imported your saves into Season Two, all of your Season One choices from that save slot will then be stored in your Season Two imported save.
This is only if you wish to play through Season One again and create a new save with different choices to import into Season Two.

The issue you are experiencing was a save slot issue that was fixed for most users, but a small amount of users are still reporting it occurring. I apologize for any difficulties it has caused you, and I hope you are able to enjoy the game!

The same exact thing happened to me recently. Both my brothers played the game on files 1 and 2 leaving me with the apparently lesser 3. I am so close to finishing season 1 but episode 5 keeps glitching. I want to know if their is a way to fix it or do I have to replay episode 5 on my brother's file, hopefully not messing up their desicions. I really hope there is a way for this to be fixed, don't get me wrong, I love this game!

What is the reasoning behind deleting the save data? In what way does it fix the problem? Just curious.
My brother and I played through the game on save slots 1 and 2 respectively and had zero issues. Recently I felt like replaying the game, and started a new save in save slot three. I didn't have any issues with this until about half way through episode 5. So if I delete the save slots in 1 & 2 and then move my current save data to slot 1 I should be fine?
Edit:
Made a separate Xbox profile, giving me three empty save slots. I had to have my choices from the episodes randomly generated (they actually turned out similar to what I did anyway), but I was able to play the episode just fine.

I deleted everything relating to the game from my 360. The saves, the game, the updates. Download the game again, it updated at start-up.
Hit episode 2 at the 'revival' section, just as Ben goes to speak "Storage Device Lost."

+SPOILERS+
same problem happened to me, only its during the 400 days game. and the 'storage device has been unplugged' error shows up when i try to play shel or bonnie stories. (the other 3 stories played just fine) it seems to happen at the exact same time during both stories- shel, when they catch the guy stealing supplies, and bonnie- after she's shot and falls down the hill is when i get the error message. any fixes at all? i just bought all 6 episodes last week, and waiting to buy/play ep 2. but if this is how its going to be, i just may have to cut my losses and not buy any of ep 2 (watch the story on youtube *shudder* ) i have an older xbox 360 (bought about 2007 - 2008) with a 250 gig hdd, and 198 gig of free space.
I previously had completed Season One and 400 last year. I bought Season Two and when I went to import my Save Game, it said it could not find any save game. I tried loading Season One again, and it also showed that all save game data was missing. I recently bought a new 120GB HDD for my Original Xbox 360. Redownloaded Season One and began from the start again. Everything was going well until after completing the chapter where I save Doug or Carley. I reach out for Kenny's hand, the game proceeds to load the next chapter, and then I get the error a Storage Device has been lost, and I get thown back to the main menu.
If I try to just continue, the game is stuck at a black screen, but I can quit back to the Dashboard. Other times, it will lock up the xbox completely.
If I try using the rewind function, it gives me the option to rewind to the chapter after saving Doug or Carley, the chapter that caused the storage error. If I try that, the game shows a black screen or locks up the xbox.
If I rewind back to the chapter where I choose to save Doug or Carley, I can replay that section, but as soon as it tries to continue to the next chapter, I get the same storage error.
I am basically stuck now.
I've tried moving the save game to Hard Disk, USB, Cloud - all show the same error, at the same point. I've also tried moving the save game around different slots, copying from slot 1 to slot 3 or slot 2, then deleting the original save in slot 1. Still no help.
This is a fresh install of TWD, a brand new save and it's getting stuck every time at this point. The information I got back from support@telltalegames was to try deleting any saves in slots 2 and 3, which I had already tried. The next step was to delete the save completely, meaning I go back to the start, again! For some reason they mention backing up the save, which seems pointless, if the only way to continue, is to delete the save and not use it!!
My apologies, unfortunately at this time, the instructions that you received is the only known solution to resolve the issue. If deleting the saves from slots 2 and 3 did not work, deleting your save game and starting again is the only known solution. I apologize for any difficulties this may cause you.
Is this something Telltale will be working on to produce a fix, or has development for Season 1 been abandoned as Season 2 is in progress?
It's not hard to extract a copy of a save game from an xbox for those who have this issue. Surely with enough of these, you should be able to see a pattern, or some corruption within the save game that would cause this?

… more It's not hard to extract a copy of a save game from an xbox for those who have this issue. Surely with enough of these, you should be able to see a pattern, or some corruption within the save game that would cause this?
For what it's worth, I extracted the save game files from my xbox save game. Then I bought the PC version, played the first chapter and quit. Then I was able to paste the xbox saves into the PC save game folder, replacing the existing save.
Surprisingly, the xbox save game was compatible with the PC version, and I was able to use my saved game. I tried just clicking continue, but the game hung on the PC too. I then rewound to the previous chapter and completed it. On the xbox, I would have received the Storage Error after loading the next chapter, but on the PC version, it continued right to the end of the Episode without any trouble.
So it seems to point to a bug with the xbox save game system. Although neither system can "continue" with the save, at least the PC seems able to overwrite a corrupted save and continue after rewinding to the previous chapter.
I tried to import the PC save back into the xbox save, but they are not compatible that direction. I was unable to get the software to replace or add the PC saves, I think the xbox version may use additional compression.
I took another look at the xbox save game, and noticed one of the time stamps of a Save_x.save file, was in the future. There was also a save_x.save file that was only 144bytes, compared to the others, which were around 75kb. I deleted the future timestamped file, and the 144byte file and tried the save in the xbox. I tried to continue, but straight away got a Storage Error (instead of a black screen/lockup)
I tried to rewind to the previous chapter, but on the first autosave, I got the Storage Error.
I tried rewinding two chapters, and on the third autosave, I got the Storage Error.
I finally rewound three chapters, and was able to complete the Episode without any error.
Once again this points to some sort of error in the xbox save system. Without knowing what Save_x.save file relates to what chapter, it's impossible to say for sure where to rewind to; but it does seem rewinding, and replaying a chapter to replace the corrupt or low-byte save game, enables the game to continue.
After completing the Episode, I checked the file sizes and dates again. Save_13.save is back to 144 bytes, but does not have the latest timestamp. Save_12.save had the latest timestamp, with Save_7.save the one before that. Prefs.prop had the most recent date. None of them had dates in the future.
I'm now not sure whether to delete everything and just start again, in case I reach 400 days and get the same error just before Season 2; or else just hope for the best
Either way, there is a bug with the xbox 360 save/load system which does not affect the PC version, even with the exact same save game and prefs.prop files.
While I was able to continue Episode 2, the Storage Error reappeared just as I met Jolene.
Looking at the save files, save_21.save is 132 bytes, compared to all the other files, which are around 10to 70 KB
I tried replaying the chapter, and still got the Storage Error. Looking again at the save games, it had created a new save_22.save file, but again this was only 132 bytes
Copying the save game to the PC version, I was able to rewind and continue without any trouble. After completing the Jolene chapter, I took a look at the PC saves. Both save_21 and save_22 had been updated and were now around 70KB.
I tried to inject those files into the xbox save, and while the software allowed it this time, selecting USB as the data source on TWD on the xbox gave an immediate storage error
I guess it's just delete everything and go back to the start again, and hope the next run through doesn't get corrupted. Ugh
Thank you greatly for posting this extra information. I will make sure to pass it along to the team. If you are still experiencing the error/issue inside the Xbox version of the game, make sure you are deleting the save files from the Storage Device from the Xbox Dashboard, and not from inside the game, or the error/issue may persist. Again, my apologies for any difficulties this has caused you, and I hope you enjoy the game!

Could this problem have happened because of the most recent title update. Cause I don't recall having this problem before that. I seem to only get this error mostly when I am about to be given control of Lee again. Also for me if i clear system cache and title update after the error it allows me to go further through the chapter before it gives me the error. I managed to complete a chapter by continuously going back to the xbox menu every time it "errors" deleting the title update and cache, restart game download title update and rewinding the chapter im on. Slowly but surely completing more and more.
I remember going through it the first time, and I don't remember their being any title update. I had multiple save games and rewound a few times without issue.
When in the season did the title update appear? I played the first episode when it was released for free on XBLA, then every episode after that as soon as it was issued.
I deleted the save game from my xbox using the storage manager, and managed to complete the first Episode without any issue. The only different in this playthrough would be:
1)I didn't rewind this time. Last time I rewound just before entering the pharmacy store, back to the Motel scene, so I could fix the radio for Carley.
2)Nothing else was downloading in the background. The last playthrough I was downloading Crackdown in the background, and everytime TWD autosaved, it would pop up and say that the downloading of Crackdown had stopped. Crackdown was going to the HD, TWD save game was on USB, and I could see the USB's access light flickering during saving and also during the failed saves.
If I experience the issue again, I'll try your suggestions Brandongizmo!
I think it was December or January. But I havent experience d this problem before the most recent update which is why I think the update did something. Even when I did what they recommend doing it doesnt fix it but when I played the first episode without the update I experienced no error.

Now on Episode 3 and have yet to experience a Storage Lost error.
I did receive another strange error - I think I paused the game just as a new scene was starting (possibly autosaving at that point) , and all of a sudden it said the device containing the game was removed, even though it was on the HD! I was kicked back to the dashboard, and restarted TWD. Luckily I was able to pick up where I was.
I have also been downloading other games in the background again. I get the error that Downloading has stopped for the game, but no save corruption or Storage errors.
I am having the same problem iv got a brand new xbox with 150g free and i deleted al the WD data tried to play it again and nothing ! still doesn't work i want my money back !
Please try deleting the game, and re-downloading it from the Xbox Marketplace after you have deleted your save files. After downloading it, make sure you are connected to the internet when you start it, to ensure you have downloaded the latest Title Update available for the game. Then start a new game, and you should not experience this particular issue on your new game.

Okay, so I've only used save files 1 and 2. Save file 1 is from a long time back when I played episode 1. Save file 2 has everything from Season 1 including the DLC. I wanted to replay the DLC to fix some of my choices before importing to season 2 and I do get that storage error as well. How can I fix this without doing a FULL playthrough (I only wish to do a 400 days DLC playthrough with my season 1 choices intact).
I apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately you may need to delete one of your save slots, and then see if you are able to play through 400 Days on your preferred save slot. My apologies for any difficulties that this may cause you.

So I've been playing through season 1 again on my third save slot, I've reached episode 4 and first got this message as lee gets his leg stuck in the stairs. Since then I've tried to find a fix with little luck; I've tried everything from deleting my saves to using a different storage device but still I'm getting the same storage device lost error? I really don't want to start it again as I've been playing it recently so it'll be really annoying to do that so does anyone know anything I can do to help please?
My apologies, unfortunately if you have tried deleting your save slots in-game, and are still experiencing the issue, you will need to go to your save files from your Storage Device menu from your Xbox Dashboard, and delete your save file associated with The Walking Dead: Season One, and start a new game. I apologize for any difficulties this may cause you.

This has to be something you can fix without deleting saves. Mine froze up near the end of Episode 5. If I want these choices to go through to Season 2 I can't just delete them while I'm at the end. It's ridiculous that this has been an issue for almost two years. I also don't understand how my game can work perfectly, and then when I want to run through it again it breaks. Help or get a patch out. Please.
i have found the solution! i was getting the same storage device lost error message and was looking all over the net for a fix. i have found it, myself.
when you get the error message, DON'T copy your saved game to another file slot to try right away. INSTEAD, REWIND to the most recent chapter, which'd be the scenario you were on WHEN THE CRASH HAPPENED. then once the chapter has loaded and got it's first autosave, QUIT TO THE MAIN MENU. THEN copy the save to an empty file, then play on THAT file instead. i did this and it fixed the error i'd been getting continuously.

I am on my fourth playthrough, in slot three. I deleted my other save so I could copy this one to slot one, and deleted the saves in slots 2 and 3. It didn't work though
Does that advice still work if I add my save back into the game after backing it up? I don't want to lose all my choices.

Deleting the data helped, it's all back to normal, at least for now.

1) Delete the save data in save slots 2 & 3 from within The Walking Dead. (You may wish to back-up the data)

I deleted everything relating to the game from my 360. The saves, the game, the updates. Download the game again, it updated at start-up.
Hit episode 2 at the 'revival' section, just as Ben goes to speak "Storage Device Lost."
same problem happened to me, only its during the 400 days game. and the 'storage device has been unplugged' error shows up when i try to play shel or bonnie stories.
I sincerely apologize, unfortunately there have been no plans announced to update Season One at this time.
Thank you guys for providing the extra information!
Thank you for providing the extra information on how you were able to resolve your issue. I hope you are now able to enjoy the game!
