"Updating Content" Glitch Season 2 - Episode 2

Hello!

I recently picked up TWD Season 2 on disk. I was super excited to jump into it, as I loved Season 1. I successfully completed S2EP1, turned my PS3 off for the night (it was about 3:30am, and I had school the next day :P), and waited for the evening. Evening comes, and I go to load S2EP2, and it tells me that it is "Updating Content". I decide to let it sit for a bit, and come back to it (this was at 1am). I ended up falling asleep and waking up at 4:30am sad to see that it was still in the "updating content" screen. I saw the glitch appears on S2EP5, but i'm getting it sooner. Any suggestions on what to do?

Thanks,
Bait

    Thread: I lost everything.

I'm playing the PS3 disc version of The Walking Dead Season 2. Loving every moment of it. I was continuing off my save files from Season 1 and 400 Days. Playing for 10 hours straight, satisfied with all the choices I made, finally finding peace within myself...

Then halfway through Episode 5 (after the campfire scene), the screen got stuck on the blank loading page.

I left for awhile, gave it about 10 minutes, then came back. It was still "loading." I tried hitting the home button on my controller, but no luck. The game had obviously frozen.

I reset my system and started the game over again. I got the message "Save data corrupted; recreating data." Followed by the "Upgrading Content" screen ad infinitum.

I gave it about 30 minutes. Started freaking out. Checked all the threads here.

I have a third save file.

I guess that was the bug. Funny that playing the game multiple times (because I love it so much) is what screwed me in the end.

The Upgrading Content screen never ceased. I gave the system another reboot.

Started the game. All my save files are now completely wiped.

    Everything.

I put so much into these games. Not just time. Emotion. Tears. I got to a place where I was playing instinctively; I WAS Clementine.

    And now it's all gone.

I was already planning on playing the game a second time (doing all the OPPOSITE decisions), but I still don't know the outcome of my playthrough.

Obviously I can start the fifth episode again from scratch...but with the preloaded choices. All my work from before is gone.

This is just...unacceptable. I'm sorry. I love Telltale Games, but this should never have happened. Not with this final disc version. This bug should have already been worked out.

All this because I saved on all three slots? Seriously...

Well, I ended up replaying the last chapter with all the pre-generated content. Everything that played in the "Previously on The Walking Dead" segment was completely contrary to what I had spent the last 10 hours creating. Characters made general comments toward me that didn't apply. I felt like I was playing an entirely different game. As a result, I felt completely unemotional and uncaring at the rest of the game. Bonnie hated me for no apparent reason. In fact, every character seemed to hold a grudge against me despite the fact that I had spent so much time trying to keep the peace; knowing when to trust and give others the benefit of the doubt, and knowing when I had to be ruthless and make the hard choices. But in the end, it was all for nothing. During the final climactic battle, I was so completely out of it that I refused to participate and just let the game run automatically. The ending was not the one I would have chosen. And although I cried at the end, I felt it was for all the wrong reasons.

What started out as such a perfect gameplay experience was ruined by such a stupid inconsistency. And I will never forgive this game for that.

I know it's just a game. But when you have nothing else going on in your life, the game is everything. I'm barely hanging on by a thread as it is.

Whatever. It doesn't matter anymore. Nothing matters...

Nice to see no one gives a shit.

Just so you know, I started playing the game over from the beginning. I was almost all the way through Chapter 2, then the game froze on me. I reset my PS3 and started the game again. This time I didn't get a message about the corrupted data. I didn't get the Updating Content screen. All my save files were just gone. Again.

My first playthrough was already ruined because of this. I always remember my first playthrough of ANY game. That's what stays with me. So my experience has already been inconsolably marred. But it didn't have to happen again. I spent my time playing through all the opposite actions this time around so there would be no stone left unturned. But now I'm done with this game. I didn't even bother replaying the second chapter, I went straight to the third chapter with all the preloaded choices. All of my efforts gone. I've lost all investment in this game. I feel like my time should be compensated just for having to suffer through this crap...not once, but TWICE.

Just as a tip to the developers, instead of randomly generating choices for "skipped" episodes, you should be given the option to pick them yourself. Especially since all my choices this time around are completely contrary to what I had done...ONCE AGAIN. This is such fucking bullshit. This entire game is about building relationships and making choices. You need the continuity throughout to thoroughly enjoy the game. When you take that away, the game loses all its impact. There is absolutely no reason why all my save games should have been overwritten and erased because of a lockup error. At the very least, I should have been given the option to go back one chapter with all my choices intact.

Yeah, all right. Thanks for not caring.

  • evidently noone cares to review these posts...I've had the same incident happening on my ps3.

im sorry we have to go through this...

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. We are currently looking into the cause of this issue. Can you please clarify if you have the European or North American disc? The second time the game froze, and you lost your save data, how many save slots were you using?

Thread: Why hasn't the ep5 problem been fixed yet?????

Here I am, a faithful fan, one in a million, posing a simple question to a technical problem that one would assume is simple, yet after months of questioning and pleading it still hasn't been fixed. This of course is the Season 2 Episode 5 bug, whereby one is prevented from accessing the episode by an indefinite loading menu. After playing the previous 4 episodes across the week, I was in a naturally urgent state to start episode 5, not least because of the cliffhanger of Episode 4. This series is built on one's emotional effort. We give hours upon hours because we care about these characters, we want to learn about them, forge relationships with them, help them, harm them even, and in all this a driven story that we want our protagonist to emerge from safely and securely. This is all standard knowledge, and experience that we all know, but I'm emphasising this, because it makes it all the more ridiculous and exasperating when one can't finish the game. Clementine, that beautiful creation, has been my safety deposit box of emotion for god knows how long, and now I can't return to that because of some damn technical fault.

So I start the game up today, get to the main menu unhindered, and then I select 'play' as one does, only to be greeted by an endless loading menu. It tells me it's 'Updating Content', but it never does. I leave it a considerable amount of time (for a loading menu anyway) maybe half an hour, 40 minutes, and there still isn't any progress. I quit and retry. Nothing. I can access 'My Choices' and the settings menu easily enough, but when I went to click 'My Saves' just to ensure that they were there and unharmed, instead of seeing my save, of which I must stress there is only one, as I have been playing across the four episodes with only one save, I instead find some generic thumbnail with the date March 2013 underneath. It should have an episode 4 thumbnail with 27/12/2014 underneath. But in my save data utility, the game is still there, unharmed, with the correct date. I haven't had any messages from the game itself or the system warning me of corrupted saves.

So, what now? I see this problem, in some shape or form, has dated way back to August. Why hasn't this been fixed? How difficult could it possibly be. I thought Telltale was a responsive developer that cared about the experiences of its fans. I don't want to sound self-entitled or ignorant, but this is ridiculous. It's a complete disregard for the sanctity of the personal relationship one has with any fictional reality. Emotional investment, especially with this series, is not a trivial thing. It's not just a matter of the time I've devoted to the game, it's the energy, the thought, the care. These are all things that Telltale have given to create the game, so why can't this issue be corrected? With just one episode left, I feel like everything thing I've felt has been negated. Are there even any plans to fix this? I've read the comments of some people who have started over at the beginning only to encounter problems at other points in the game. This is like having a book that I'm currently reading seized from my hands, by the author, and torn in half right in front of me. But even then I could get another copy and return to where I was. That's not possible here. My experience is, in effect, tainted. I don't want to bring melodrama here, but I'm inordinately frustrated. This message wouldn't exist if I didn't love the game.

[Edit] This is a disk version. And I also deleted the game data utility in the vague hope that it wasn't actually a fault within the save data. To no avail.

I also considered buying a digital copy of episode 5, but then I realised if the problem is in the save data, then that wouldn't work. Are there not any weird ways to somehow work around this without losing the save data?

Also, I'm in Britain. So I'm.. Region 2. Or PAL? Is that the gaming equivalent? If that makes any difference at all.

I have the same problems as you. Only one save file and still got this glitch or bug or whatever it is. First time I got my file corrupted for some reason so I had to redo all 4 episodes from the start, and when I got to episode 5 the following day I couldn't access it cause of the never ending updating content load. Think its been more than a month now since I saw this problem in the forums. Posted on two different topics already.. guess there's still no answer for this. I only hope that they could patch/update the game soon without me needing to delete my save and redo the whole game again from the start. I really hate replaying games without finishing them at least once.

Maybe they're too busy working on other games? i don't know.. but this problem is making me rethink of buying another telltale game.

  • Thread: perpetual "updating content" ep5

Can anyone at Telltale PLEASE update us on when a patch or fix will be ready for ep5? I purchased season 2 new on disc, it loaded all of season 1 ok, 400days ok and played through ep4 ok then when it goes to load ep5 after being at the power facility it sits on the snowy load screen and perpetually says "updating content". I actually left it on for 2 days just to see what would happen....of course nothing... I have also tried every option I could find on these boards and have replayed the game 3 times with the end result being the same. VERY frustrating. At least give us some updated information on the status of a fix. That's the least you can do!

  • Ok, same thing happened to me...This can not be true somehow.
I was about to delete my saved file and start all over, but now i see it does not work.

Well Telltale Team, how about helping us.

  • its already 2015!! telltale wake up!

  • I agree, it is very annoying. I've been playing TWAU, so that I have a Telltale game to play, but this needs to be fixed ASAP

I apologize for the inconvenience. Can you please clarify if you are able to access your save files by going to the Save Files menu from the Main Menu? If you open the Save Files menu, do you become stuck on that menu, or are you able to scroll between your save slots? Also, can you please clarify if you are able to start Episode 5 on a blank save slot, and play the episode without experiencing this issue? Did you play straight through the game in one or two sittings, or did you turn your console off, and reload your saves a few times between each episode?

We have had a few reports from players experiencing this issue, and are currently looking further into the root cause of the issue. We hope to have a resolution in the near future. Unfortunately at this time, the only workaround is to upload your saves to the Playstation Online Storage and start a new game, or delete the Save Data Utility for the game from the Save Data Utility menu on your PS3's XMB, and start a new game in Season Two. Again, my apologies for any difficulties this may cause you, as we look further into the issue.

  • This is BAD! My problem appeared in episode 6. So I'll have to restart the game and complete it in one sitting? Not possible. Dang thing crashed while saving and now I cannot finish the game. Not right. I'm using the disk on a 100% offline system... we shouldn't be paying beta testers.

  • Hi,
I just bought a ps3 disc version of twd season 2 (North American) & I am having the same problem. I played though the whole 1st episode of season 2 & during the credits I got the corrupted save file msg & my save deleted itself. So I started over. This time I made it almost to the end of episode 1 before it froze & I had to restart again. When I opened the main menu to view saved files, they were gone again, saying empty. Please help'

  • it happens to me the same thing (on ps3, disc version, import save WD season 1), at the chapter 2, it frozen, save corrupted. The save desapear ! Patiently, i delete my save with regret, i start a new game, i keep my firt choice because i want play MY game with MY choice and i want see what happens next with this choices. And again, chapter 2, i load my game, it’s updating content to infinity. Impossible to load my game (and start a new game).
Now, i’m not in the mood to start a new game, again, for the third time.
It’s shame. It’s a good game, with a lot quality but THAT, it ruins my experience forever. If it’isnt fix, i’ll never see what’s happen next. I don’t want play with random choices. What’s the point ? The point of this game is make our own choices, so what’s the point if i start a new game with random choices ?
And when i see the comments, it’s a desperate cause, today in February, nothing is fix, and the first message was wrote in october, five month ago ! I’ve no hope.
(sorry for my bad english, i’m french, and i search some confort and answer here)

    Thread: Fix this!

Because of a really stupid glitch that has been on PS3 for months, I had to restart TWD S2. Telltale has said that they have been working to fix this glitch for MONTHS, but it's still there. Basically, after episode 4, when you try to play, it would go to a loading screen saying "updating conyent", but would never actually load. As far as I know, its only on the disk version. Anyway, the only way to fix it is to delete your save file and start over. But im glad I did. Because holy crap, episode 5 hit me HARD, right in the feels. Anyway, its just frustrating that i had to wait for months before i even could consider starting over

I sincerely apologize for any difficulties this has caused you. If you are still experiencing the issue, we have heard from players that have also experienced the issue, that starting a New Game, and playing through each episode individually, allows them to successfully complete the game. We have found that playing through larger chunks of the game at once can cause this issue to occur, and if you only play in smaller increments (one episode or less, at a time) you will not experience the same issue. I recommend try following another players steps on how they were able to resolve this particular issue:

Make sure that you have deleted any save files from Season Two from your PS3. Then try playing through the game an episode at a time, and when you complete an episode, try quitting out of the game, and turn your console off. Then after turning it back on, start the game, and play the next episode. Then repeat the process for each episode, and you will be able to complete the game with your choices from Season One.

  • Thread: My saves were also deleted

Hello! I am a HUGE Telltale fan, but my disc copy of Walking Dead Season 2 for PS3 also received the message that "the save files had been corrupted and would be recreated" halfway through playing Episode 2. Shortly after receiving this message, my game froze. Upon restarting my system, I discovered all my progress had been lost, even my decisions for Episode 1. Everything was gone. I was playing this in one sitting when this happened, and I have heard that shutting down the system in between episodes can help. However, I am curious if this problem will be addressed in a patch/update, as it seems many players are also encountering this problem. I guess I am just looking for a little reassurance here, as I love your games, but I would like to be able to play them without the constant fear I am going to lose my progress at any moment. It kind of ruins an otherwise amazing experience. So please, PLEASE keep your fanbase updated on any upcoming fixes for this problem.

    Sincerely,
    A Frustrated Fan

  • Hi TelltaleMike, I just wanted to add that I too am a sufferer of the common "Updating Content" issue. Again Episode 2 of Season 2 and my game included the import of my S1 decisions. From my searches it seems common that the glitches occur in ep2 and ep5.
My worry is that the recommendation is to play in smaller chunks and not to play for long intervals, I can safely say that I do only play in small chunks yet I have been met with the glitch in ep2.
What I am trying is once I have completed an episode is to then stop playing and turn off the game. I copy the game save file onto usb and then carry on with the game. I am hoping this will work as per your advice and the save file should let me revert back instead of having to restart entirely again.
I must stress how much I enjoy your games, however find it unacceptable that an issue like this has made its way into the released game and not picked up in testing. The issue was identified a while ago now and yet still no patch/update.

I hope you can fix this.
    Thanks
