Constant stuttering/freezing

Last night I played episode 2 and I have not been that frustrated with a game in a long time.

Why? Because the game is in such a poor technical state it is nowhere near release ready.

  1. The game constantly stutters/freezes for several seconds during combat making it impossible to react unless you know them by heart i.e play them at least two times, but even then you are at the whim of the stuttering. So one of the main gameplay features is completely broken.
  2. More often than not, after loading, the first thing that is said in a dialogue is repeated more or less two times.
  3. Stuttering also takes place randomly during most cutscenes and transitions making the narration harder to follow because you miss who is saying what and other things when the freezing occurs.

The issues were also in ep1 but nowhere near as bad as ep2.

A Google told me that this does not seem to be limited to neither GoT or PS3 but is more or less a problem on all platforms in many of you recent releases. The issues seem to be of a technical nature, therefore also very much patchable, please do so asap.

I could have loved this game, there are many reasons to do so, but instead I feel very much insulted that you actually went ahead and sold this to me in it's current state.

  • Same here, I would add that the subtitles are badly out of sync with the spoken dialogue during the stuttering (i.e. the spoken sentences are not even heard).

Anyhow, I agree the episode shouldn't have been released in such a poor technical state, it is virtually not-playable.

I sincerely apologize for any difficulties this has caused you. If you experience any stuttering/freezing during gameplay, can you please clarify if you were connected to the internet while playing through the episode? If so, is your connection a wired, or wireless internet connection? Also, can you please clarify if you rewind to a scene before you experienced the stuttering, that the issue does not occur again?

  • uhm, I noticed the same problems....like ALOT, in almost every scene, system is 250GB slim PS3, I was connected to the internet via wireless first time I played through, but not the 2nd time, same issues both times, also the scene in the garden (episode 2 where the girls are drinking wine) they characters were VERY blurry, like their arms were EXTREMELY pixelated around lines, literally looked like they were shedding pixels....

My apologies, if you are experiencing any graphical issues, as well as stuttering/freezing, can you please clarify if you have tried deleting and re-downloading the game from the Playstation Store, then starting the game again while connected to the internet to ensure you are receiving the latest updates/content for the game?

  • I'm also experiencing this problem, you described it perfectly. The game constantly stutters/freezes for a second or two in both cutscenes and quicktime events, making it extremely frustrating to play. Is there any way to fix this? I've already downloaded all the updates to the game and deleted/reinstalled it.

If you have already tried deleting and re-downloading it, and making sure you have downloaded the latest update available for the game, can you please clarify the model PS3 you are currently using, how large the hard drive is, and if you currently have at lease 10% space left on the hard drive?

  • What if you actually would admit that the game isn't working 100% correctly and ansewer the questions instead of answering with new questions.
I have the exact same problems. I very much doubt it has anything to do with the console or connection, that's just bullshit, sorry but it's true. Even pewdiepie have these problems wich you can see in his episodes.

I apologize for any difficulties caused by this. We are looking further into the root cause of this particular issue on PS3, unfortunately at this time I do not have an update on the issue. Could you please provide information on your current setup? I could then pass it along to the team for further investigation. Are you playing on an original PS3, PS3 Slim, or PS3 Super Slim console? What size is your console's hard drive, and do you have at least 10% space left on the hard drive in order for the game to successfully cache?

  • Hello Mike,
same here. I am playing on a PS3 slim. I have much more than 10% on the hard drive left, and I installed the game twice. The game stutters with and without being online. So, I am sorry, but I can only say this game isn't finished, at least not for the PS3. I have never had such issues with TTG on the PS3 before.
    Any chance for a patch??

  • TelltaleMikeTelltaleMike Former Telltale Staff

At this time, we have not announced any plans for a patch or update for the game. I will make sure to pass your information along to the team. Can you please clarify if you restart the episode, that the stuttering/hitching occurs less/in smaller increments?

  • I am also experiencing constant stuttering :(

    Specs:
    PS3 Super Slim
    500GB 7200rpm HDD, 60GB free
    Wireless connection to internet

It happens exactly as desribed by others. When changing scenes, audio repeats sometimes. Also missing quicktime events due to stutter. EP2 was worse than EP1.

Please fix this, it makes the game very unenjoyable :(

  • The game is unplayable! I can't play it at all as it freezes every single dialogue and cutscene. I feel like you are deceiving me on money! I'm so angry right now I don't know what to do. Please fix this! The game can't be played!

Same problem here. PS3 slim, 500 GB, wireless internet connection. Episode 1 had issues, but episode 2 is even worst; I will probably try episode 3 today. By the moment, constant blank screens (with sound, at least), sound and action not coordinated in a lot of places, dialogs partially repeated constantly, kinematics not correct, background fuzzy (doors, plants, etc), ... So the game is buggy and the final product is not good (at least the story is great, as always), looks like we are the beta testers. I bought the season pass because I have The Walking Dead Season 1, 400 days and Season 2 and they are great, but Game of Thrones is a poor product. Please solve these problems as soon as possible.

I will make sure to pass all of the extra information along to the team. @putxus Can you please clarify if the issue becomes lessened/is not as bad after you rewind to the beginning of the episode, and replay through the first couple of scenes, or is it the same the second time through?

  • I am having the same issues as others have listed above. I think it's fair to say these are not isolated instances, and that we only represent those who took the time to post here, meaning this probably is quite a large problem. I am using a PS3 40GB with approx 16GB free, the system doesn't seem to be the problem seeing other posts above. Additional info I can tell you is that I downloaded the free trial first, it auto installed the patches, and everything was running fine without any issues, then I decided to buy the season pass, it made me download episode one again except it acknowledged I basically already had it (with the demo) and did it in about 2 seconds. It made me start over again, it didn't let me keep the choices already made from the demo, and right from the get go it was laggy with repeating of speaking audio a bit too often, plus the odd speaking audio missing at times. I just started episode 2 tonight and so far it's worse for lagging than episode one.

If you first downloaded the free trial, then purchased the Season Pass, I recommend try deleting the game from your PS3 (This will not harm your save files), then re-download the first Episode from the Playstation Store (make sure to do a search for 'Game of Thrones - Episode 1: Iron From Ice' and download the 'PSN GAME' and not the 'Demo'.) Then start the game while connected to the internet, and make sure to download the latest update available for the game. Then once in-game, download the second episode from the in-game Episodes menu, and restart the second episode, and see if the hitching/stuttering issue is resolved.

  • Just played through Episode 2 and experienced the exact same issues. Extremely frustrating. There is clearly a problem with the game. You don't need everyone to post their details, simply load up the game on a PS3 yourselves and play through it.

  • Yep, a ps3 is a ps3 is a ps3... Isn't that the whole point of a console? Its obvious that the ps3 port for this game was a low priority rush job. Which is a shame.

A small hitch or stutter during autosaving or loading sequences may occur, but any major stuttering or hitching during gameplay is unusual. If you are still experiencing the issue, could you possibly take a video of what you are currently seeing during gameplay, and reply with a download link to the video so that I could pass it along to the team for investigation?

  • I've noticed your answers are pretty much the same for the past two months. Your company seems to give no f$&k at all in terms of customer satisfaction. You should be refunding everyone who has wasted their money on this title for the PS3 console version. Which is a shame as it seems like it would be quite enjoyable but instead it's a frickn nightmare. The fact is nobody here needs to give you any video footage at all. I'm sure you've got access to a PS3 for the office. I'm more than 100% sure your well aware of the problems and just giving everyone the run around

We are currently working on resolving this particular issue via an update, and I hope to be able to provide more information on the situation soon. Unfortunately at this time I do not have anymore information on the subject other than that we are currently working on resolving the issue.

  • Not to sound like an ingrate for the response but when? It shouldn't have been released in the sorry state it was. Too intent on making money to coincide releases during the new season of the show rather than releasing a quality product. There are indie developers with a tenth of the resources and experiences that churn out high quality problem free games. This company truly has no excuse.

  • May 26th, I still cannot get through Episode 2 without the damn thing freezing/stuttering during the first fight/quicktime event. 500GB Slim PS3, 23GB left on HDD, Wired internet connection. Deleted and redownloaded the game, Rebuilt the database, restored the file system, game still freezes and stutters. This game is not complete and it has definitely got me pissed. I know because just for S(&^ & Giggles I decided to load up The Walking Dead Season 2 and it played through with almost no issues whatsoever! When will a patch be made available for this?

  • TelltaleMikeTelltaleMike Former Telltale Staff

We released an update that should have resolved the performance issues throughout Game of Thrones. The latest Update was released early this morning along with the episode. Please make sure that you are connected to the internet and logged into your PSN account when starting the game, and you should be prompted to download and install the latest update. (The latest version is Version 1.07)

  • While I noticed the stutters and slowdowns, and the repeating dialoge, it never really bothered me, or took away from the game as a whole, because it was never that bad for me (Maybe I just have low standards). But I am pissed that the game doesn't even LOAD now, just crashes my system. I am disappointed... I love some of the other thing the company does, but this seems to be just for the PS3. which is something that is sad. I like the game allot, but this is ridiculous...

  • I am truly disappointed at the lagging and glitches. I expected a smoother gameplay and it kind of makes it not fun to play when it's glitchy like that. Everything else about the game is great I played it through I love the story I had fun controlling and making my decisions but it would've been better if it didn't lagging glitch. :}
