Please note that only the Wired Microsoft Xbox 360/PC Controller is supported for our games. If you are using a wired Microsoft controller, please make sure that you have the controller plugged into your computer before you start the game through Steam. Please also make sure that you have downloaded and installed the latest drivers for the controller.

  • Hi, I have this same problem. I'm also not in the steam client beta and I am using a wired Xbox 360 controller for Windows. It works for other games, including Telltale's The Wolf Among Us. No luck with The Walking Dead Season 2, however. What can I do?

Also, how can we check our drivers? They're downloaded automatically by Windows, so they should be up to date. Microsoft's support page doesn't seem to offer drivers for Windows 8.1. It stops at Windows 7: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/p/xbox-360-controller-for-windows#support.

If you are on Windows 8.1, please make sure that the controller is plugged in before you start the game, otherwise the game may not register it as an input device. You can also try Verifying the Game Cache for the game, then restart it after you have plugged your controller in. Please also make sure that you do not have any other USB devices plugged in that may be registering as input devices, other than a keyboard and mouse.

  • I verified the game cache and started the game with nothing else plugged into the USB ports (not even keyboard or mouse, as it's a laptop). It still doesn't recognize the controller. I even tried uninstalling the gamepad driver and reinstalling after a reset. No good.

I also revisited The Wolf Among Us and found it gave me the same problem, even though I played through it with the same computer and gamepad around the time the last episode came out. The controller does work with other games, however, and with big picture mode.

If you are currently using Windows 8.1, can you please clarify if you have a 'dinput8.dll' file in the file directory of the game? If so, try deleting it, then start the game again, and your controller should then work correctly.

  • Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the problem either. No dinput8.dll in the game directory. Any other ideas? I'm pretty baffled as to why only my Telltale games can't detect the controller -- especially since Wolf used to do it just fine.

I recommend looking over This Microsoft Support Page, and follow the troubleshooting steps on that page, and you should be able to use the controller in-game.

  • I solved my controller problem. The issue turned out to be a program called Monect that I use to remotely control my laptop with my phone. After I uninstalled that, my Telltale games had no trouble detecting the Xbox controller.

Thanks for your help, TelltaleMike, even though the problem turned out to be something completely unrelated that you couldn't have known about.
