Season 1 Save Files Gone!

Hello,

I played through Season 1 and Season 2 with virtually no problems. About a month ago, replayed part of Season 1 with no issue as well. Suddenly, tried to reload the game to play and all my save files were gone. I tried loading the game from my desktop and my applications folder (for some reason I have it twice), but regardless, it made no difference. I also tried directly through steam, which made no difference. Strangely, Steam does show that I've put in 12 hours (although it was most likely more) and that I've unlocked achievements for episodes 1 & 2 (maybe even 3) of season 1 despite that not appearing in the game itself.

Any ideas? Can anything be done?

After looking over your Support Tool information, all of your files seem to be in the proper location, and should be able to be seen in-game. If you are currently unable to see them, can you please clarify if you currently have Steam Cloud Saving enabled for Season One?

If so, I recommend try disabling it, then start the game and see if you are then able to see your save files successfully. (You can disable them by right clicking on the game in your Steam Library, clicking Properties, and click the Updates tab. Near the bottom of the page, you can see if the Steam Cloud is enabled for The Walking Dead: Season One) If it is enabled, does disabling it, and restarting Steam allow you to access your saves?

  • It was enabled. I disabled it and opened the game but still cannot access my saves - all three slots read "new game."

I recommend first try Verifying your Game Cache, then restart the game, and see if you are then able to see your save files when opening Season One.

If the issue persists, I recommend making a copy of your 'TheWalkingDead' folder onto your desktop. You can find the folder in the following location:

    /Users/YOURNAME/Library/Application Support/Telltale Games/

(Your Library folder is sometimes hidden, to make it visible, please open a Finder window, and at the top of the screen, click Go and hold down the Option key. The Library will now become available in the drop down menu. Click that and follow the above file path, and move the file as specified above.)

After you have backed up your save files, try uninstalling and reinstalling the game from Steam by Right clicking the game from within your Steam Library, and click 'Delete Local Content'. Then click the Install button on the game's Steam Library page. After it has completed installing, place your save file directory back inside the /Telltale Games/ folder you removed it from, and see if you are then able to see your save files. (If there is a duplicate 'TheWalkingDead' folder created in it's place, delete the newly created folder, and replace it with your backed up folder.)

  • Alright, followed all your instructions: still nothing.

Don't know if this is helpful but verification I got a message that said "1 file failed to validate and will be reacquired." I closed the message window and continued with your instructions.

After the file was reacquired and you completed my above instructions, did you see any changes to your in-game save files when starting the game, or were you still unable to see any of them?

Now that you've disabled your Steam Cloud saves, could you possibly re-run the support tool and reply with the newly uploaded file's download link? This way I can verify a secondary preferences file was not created when disabling the Cloud saves that may be causing this issue.

Thank you for providing the extra information. It appears that there are two prefs.prop files causing this issue. One in the following location:

    /Users/YOURNAME/.Trash/TheWalkingDead/

and another in the following location:

    /Users/YOURNAME/Library/Application Support/Telltale Games/TheWalkingDead copy/

Please rename both of these to prefs.prop.bak, and your save files should restore to their previous state.

Unfortunately I do not see any other files that may be causing this particular issue for you. Unfortunately if you are still unable to see your save files, they may have become corrupted and will not be able to be used. This can happen if the game were ever exited/closed, or the computer was turned off during an autosaving or loading sequence.

If this is the case you will unfortunately be unable to use those save files anymore, and I would have to recommend starting a new game in Season One. Please note that your choices from Season One should still be saved within your Season Two save files, as those are separate from your Season One save files.

  • So when Season 3 comes out, will the files be able to transfer or not?

Regardless, thank you so much for all your time. I really appreciate the effort you put in to help me!

You're welcome. Yes, your Season Two save files (that include your imported Season One saves) should be able to import over to Season Three successfully.
