Awesome! After seeing the demo forever ago I became super interested in the game. Has there been a release date yet? Or is it even coming out this year?

It looks like they are testing on Steam now, there is no pre-order yet but hopefully we don't have to wait too much longer.

Circle February 9 on your calendar, gather your friends, and put your camping trips on hold: Firewatch is coming to Windows, Mac, Linux, and PlayStation 4. At the same time!
Right now we’re still polishing, optimizing, writing, and developing the last bits of the game, but we can’t wait to put it out there for you to play. Our goal is a worldwide simultaneous release!
We’ll have much more to say in the lead-up to February 9, as well as some opportunities for folks to get an early hands-on. Keep an eye on the @camposanto Twitter feed for more, and feel free to toss us questions there or in the comments right on this blog.

once they announced the release date i sort of decided to try not to learn any more about it, the very early playthrough plus the creators got me interested enough, i am not hoping for the gaming world to be turned upside down by how revolutionary and spectacular the game is (not going overboard with my expectations) but i genuinely do expect it to be great and well worth buying, i can imagine the game won't be for everyone, but it is definitely for me, and i assume for most, if not all of the people on these forums.
Examiner has this neat interview with Sean Vannaman about Firewatch, which you can check out with the link above. It's kinda short, but touches upon things like player exploration and general (vague/spoiler free) things the plot might explore.

Firewatch will take 6 hours to complete, I'm kind of disappointed with these news.
Quality over quantity. I'd rather have an amazing 6 hour game than a boring 20 hour game. But I will admit, considering how long they've been working on it, I am a bit shocked it's that short.

I know it doesn't seem very long and even though they have been working on it for around 2+ years they are an incredibly small team (10-15 i think) and depending on how the game works there could be lots of variables in dialogue and other things that takes time to programme.
One of the Camp Santo employees gives a good explanation in their Steam forum about the game length which you might find interesting.
Sorry that's a bummer for you! We've tried to stress that Firewatch is a single player narrative/exploration game and as such, both the story we wanted the tell and the resources we have as a very small team mean some 100+ hour mega-saga is just not something Firewatch was ever going to be, and I hope we didn't accidentally give that impression.
I'm sure we can all think of games we otherwise enjoyed, but ended up a bit disappointed in because they had a bunch of unnecessary filler that wasn't really interesting or engaging, but definitely did make the game longer.
Personally, I much prefer a tight game that does a bunch of interesting things and doesn't overstay its welcome vs. something that has some good ideas but is hamstrung by a really laggardly pace.
If you happen to only like really long games, well, Firewatch just might not be what you're looking for. But those Witcher 3s, Rusts and Fallout 4s aren't going anywhere And trying out something that's a bit more focused like Firewatch might be an interesting change of pace!
Also, Jane talked a bit (generally, not in regard to Firewatch specifically) about the whole price/length thing over here, so there's some good discussion there if you're curious:

Extremely interesting, I hope it gets released soon.
The reason why it looks like a lot of bans is because it's the same person talking to themselves with alternate accounts.

I haven't read the article yet, but maybe it is 6 hours of story content without counting the exploration and gameplay?
