The weakest recent entry...
But not totally awful.
I reserved judgement on this game the best I could when it was first announced. I'm glad to say that this was not the complete abject failure that some pessimists were saying it would be. In fact, it exceeded my expectations a bit.
I was worried that the game would tailor to the target audience too much, alienating the telltale audience. It's true that some have played their earlier games for all audiences, but it was TWD, a mature title, that brought in a large number of fans.
I don't know how they do it, but everything they touch turns to gold. Characters and conflicts are already interesting and engaging and yet... It's blocks XD
However, it is the weakest entry for me. The pilot episode should set the precedent for the rest of the series, but it just felt a bit slow. I also can't help feeling the game needed more innovation in the crafting and control system. The core Minecraft game allows for much more freedom and control than a Telltale game and to draw that sort of audience in you would need a mix of these elements and in greater quantity.
I have seen a lot of positive reviews on here which is great and not at all surprising. Are we ever gonna learn not to judge a book by its cover!?

For me, it's actually my favorite premiere since Telltale's puzzle adventures, since it has puzzles, an inventory, exploration, and game play beyond quick time events and choices and consequences (although, of course, it has it's fair share of the latter as well). Plus, I thought the story was done quite well. Ivor is actually a relatable villain, I thought, as you can understand why he did what he did after you find out what was done to him. Hopefully, he'll be even more fleshed out in upcoming episodes, as I really like characters with multiple layers.
Oh, TFTB is a masterpiece! On a different scale to TWD S2 and Minecraft
I started with TWD, so I've not really been exposed to Telltale's puzzles as such, save the train I guess.
It's certainly got me asking why Ivor is so bitter and why he was omitted from the story of the Order of the Stone. Hope he does reappear.
I personally don't think it's their weakest entry (that would be Game of Thrones for me, I just can't seem to really get into it). Out of their newer games I'd probably put it below TFTB, TWD and TWAU for now, but mostly because it only has 1 episode out currently. But I do agree the game started out pretty slow the first 10 or so minutes feel a bit awkward. I think some of the voice acting could use some work (I don't really like Axel's monotone and Olivia seems to always be calm in tense situations). Aside from that it's off to a great start with my second favorite premiere episode, and I'm really curious to see where the crafting mechanic goes (I loved the secret build a lever thing you can do the first time you get to a crafting bench).
Once the potion wears off we should see him.
Thrones is weakest? Different tastes I suppose, I thought the opening was pretty strong, the only thing bad about it now is that it's leaning a bit too much on the TV show instead of standing out on it's own. The casting has been near perfect for that game too. I agree that MC falls short in that regard.
I've literally just crafted the lever on my second play through
Ivor certainly has potential. His character and the reveal foreshadow that the legends of the past has a lot of mystery behind it and that the truth is different.
I don't play Minecraft, did he drank an invisibility potion or teleportation potion?
Invisibility, no such thing as a teleportation potion, wonder how that would work anyway?
Oh, now I understand what he meant by "using his imagination"
Or was that a reference to how a player normally use their imagination to leave the Nether?
Weakest First episode? Nah, I still say "A New Day" is the Weakest. (Still a good episode though). I would put Story Mode above Season 2's first episode, but not any higher than that
TFTBL
TWAU
Story Mode
TWD S2
Thrones
TWD S1
I like A New Day, I'd put it 2nd for nostalgic appeal.
TFTB is undisputed no.1 for sure I'd put Thrones 3rd, TWAU 4th (these two were extremely difficult to choose for 3rd and 4th), TWD S2 5th and MC last
