Digging up Lechuck's chest

Please help, I can't figure out where I'm going wrong. I have the dog, I used the sock on the dog, I used the dog on the crossroads, Galeb has told Guybrush that it was rumoured that the treasure was buried there but every time I try it he says somethign like "this seems like a good idea but I'm not sure why, I should find out first" it's driving me crazy. I tried looking on a walkthrough but all the ones I found say more or less that using the sock on the dog will find the treasure. Someone please help.

    You need to do it in the right place. Go to the treasure huntery scene and try again.

    Could someone please tell/hint me how to open that damed chest ? I'm replaying and have forgotten how I did it ?
