About Joffrey and Tommen (TV Show spoilers)

On the wiki, it says they're Baratheons, but they're actually Lannisters. Why are the still called Baratheons on the wiki?! Their father is Jaime Lannister, not Robert Baratheon. But they're called Baratheons. Why?!

Comments

  • Because the truth of their parentage is only revealed at the start of A Clash of Kings & Season 2 of the show.

Before that, everyone believed Robert Baratheon to be their real father, hence the Baratheon name.

And since the Lannister's need that to be true for the sake of their own power and reputation, they dispute the rumours, and thus maintain the Baratheon name for Joffrey and Tommen.

So... essentially, since Joffrey and Tommen are legally and officially Baratheon's, they are named on the wiki as such.

They still wouldn't be Lannisters, though, because of their bastardy. They would be Hills. (The bastard name for the Westerlands).

  • So...Joffrey and Tommen Hill.

  • Technically, that would be their official titles, yes... were the Lannisters to acknowledge their father to be Jaime which of course they never will.

  • So basically, if they don't know they're bastards, they're Baratheons?

  • They are officially Baratheons. If their true parentage was really revealed and not only a "speculation", they couldn't have sit on the iron throne, because in first place they are bastards, and Second, they aren't even Robert's bastards.

  • Thats still their name, there still called that even if its the worst kept secret

  • It's to hide their true parentage as if it were found out they would no longer be viable candidates for the throne.

  • In the show, it's obviously so that they can keep sitting on the throne.

On the wiki probably to not spoil newcomers who just wanted to look the characters up. It's a big plot point that would be spoiled for anyone who is watching Season 1 and would just google the guy by name.

  • They're "abomination born of incest". Jon Arryn knew, Stannis knew, Eddard Stark knew. It's not a speculation but proof by genetic; also Jaime and Cersei acknowledge the fact that their children are Joffrey, Tommen and Myrcella.
They sit on the iron throne because their family has power... for the moment.

  • This was what I meant. Apart from Ned(who is dead) or Stannis(who is dead in the show) nobody really openly accused Cersei's children for being incest product until the
end of season 5. So they are still considered (even if people know about rumors) Baratheons. And yes, it is mostly because of Lannister's power that Tommen is still the king, and not exiled or killed.

Well, time passed since then. Stannis sent ravens to every lord of Westeros. It even crossed the Narrow Sea since Tycho Nestoris heard about it. Smallfolk seems to have heard of this too since they called Tommen a son of incest (something like that.)
Olenna made a pun about it to Tywin too.

So it's a "polichinelle" secret. I got what you meant but I think we disagree with the scale of this; people pretend that they're Baratheon, but in order to be in their favor. Once they will loose their powers (which is likely the case) the accusation will appear again.

  • Yes, the accusations are "latent" at the moment.
