Isn't Bruce Wayne .. way too hated ?

I get that he and his family were important to the people of Gotham, that they represented the good in this city full of criminals and corruption .. so, it's only natural to see people question everything they believed in when they learn Bruce's father actions, especially Bruce himself.

But am I the only one thinking that people don't just have doubts about him, but clearly hate his guts ? It's so strange to see them hate him so badly, and so suddenly.

I've often heard that was makes the difference between our century and before is that we understood that the children shouldn't have to pay for the actions of their parents, that they shouldn't endure the consequences.

The people of Gotham seem so unforgiving and far from understanding. They judge Bruce solely on his father's actions and hate him for this, and it's like everything good that Bruce ever did to this city was erased, or never existed. They were all there crying for the poor boy who had lost his parents in a tragic event, and now they're alsmot spitting on him.

I don't know if it just means that the people of Gotham are only hypocritical douchebags .. but to me, it sounds really exagerrated. At the end of episode 3, I decided to give them a last chance, so I didn't read the promptor. I told the truth about being kicked out of the company without my consent, about how worried I was for Wayne Enterprises and Gotham's future, and more importantly I told them about Cobblepot being one of the children of Gotham.

They were all there taking notes, really interested in what Bruce had to say, and I felt satisfied. But then when he was forced to join the crowd, they only looked at him with utter contempt. And I'm pretty sure that if I had sticked to the promptor, it would have been the same. You can even see in the episode 4 teaser that Bruce is going to get interned into Arkham Asylum after getting drugged and attacking Cobblepot.

I mean .. seriously ? After seeing what happened to Harvey on the debate ? With Bruce's veins appearing all over his body ? And that goddamn Harvey who lost his mind even though I saved him, and who decided to do this to Bruce even though I've always been there for him, and showed nothing but support ? I can't even trust Regina about keeping my head low to get the company back, I feel like she's playing me like everyone else.

It feels like Game of Thrones all over again : no matter what your choices are, you've got the impression that their impact is useless. But the worst part is that you always feel like the story is against you, that everyone always wins but you. It's one step forward and then 10 steps behind, it's so annoying.

It doesn't matter whether you are good or bad to the characters because the game is already beating you to death. And at the end, I feel more exhausted than I've been enjoying the game.

The game is merely a reflection of the misery and antagonism that's been directed against the 1% since the 2008 economic crisis. Bruce isn't responsible for the crimes his parents committed, but he inherited the wealth they made off the suffering of others, and now their victims have become monsters in turn. It doesn't matter if Bruce clearly looks drugged when he attacks Oswald. I suspect the Children of Arkham aren't the only ones in Gotham who want blood for blood. Capitalism isn't too popular these days.

I live in Bermuda, and there are more than a few families on the island whose ancestors gained their money through slavery. If you found out the financial security you were born into was actually achieved through evil means, what would you do? That's Bruce's dilemma right now.

  • It's strange because it would be one thing if the people suddenly suspected Bruce might be corrupt, too, but it doesn't seem like anyone does. And, yeah, Vicki is evil and whatnot but she was trying to come off as a reasonable person. Oswald might be totally biased but he and Vicki both bring up going after Bruce. Vicki says not doing anything is like a passive siding with Bruce. She says everyone's wondering why Batman doesn't "do something" (like what? Beat him up because his father was evil? Somehow steal all his money? Also why is everyone acting like Martha was involved? Falcone who should know better, at least, says "the Waynes" were the biggest gangsters and apparently Martha only knew five minutes before she died) and if she was literally the only one saying that it might blow her cover since she was trying to appear unbiased.

  • The Children of Arkham...their anger is more than just being angry at the greedy 1%. These are people who have had family destroyed by Thomas Wayne...in their minds it is not enough to expose the Waynes...no they have to do to them what was done to their family.

It doesn't matter that Bruce is innocent...guilt by association is a real thing to those people. Now others in the city...The regular Joe six packs...they are probably disappointed with the Wayne's and it feeds into the very real fact that a lot of people are working their asses off and still only barely making ends meet, yet the CEOs and other 1% make around 900 times what they do. And make that for doing way less work.

So while we all know that Bruce is not a bad person in any sense of the word..envy...and anger take on a life of their own. He will be hated just because he is rich, even if he spent years in jail...he will still be rich.

  • I had the same thought, the people who hate on Bruce come off as really stupid, do they think Bruce was working with his Dad at 8 years old?

No, but Bruce got rich off his father's crimes, even if he's only finding out about it now. This is evident in the cowardliness of the Wayne Enterprises board when they basically force him to step down as CEO. Gotham's plutocrats are panicking, and they need a scapegoat as much as the Children of Arkham need a whipping boy. Unfortunately, Bruce has become both.

  • I guess, it makes the citizens of gotham seem really unlikeable though.
