A second chance for Oz (Oswald Cobblepot)

Firstly let me clarify that Oz has been my favorite character ever since "You're ruining the moment!" Seriously I love the guy so much. I (along with other fans of Oz) was really disappointed with his scene in episode 5. The issue was that Harvey got this amazing and emotional scene where you desperately try to get through to him but with Oz there are almost no sympathetic lines. The game basically forces you to treat him badly and hate him, despite however you actually felt about him. Not to be too salty here but it felt like I missed out because I liked Oz more than Harvey.

I didn't make this thread to rant though. Season 2 is a chance to give us something great with Oz. Maybe it's too late but I really want to see him again and get something better than what we got.

Agree? Disagree? Share your thoughts! And feel free to discuss Oswald's character and how you feel about him.

  • Ouch. Well everyone's got different opinions. XD

  • I don't see why people hate Oz. He had true motivation, not that one dimensional villain we always see.

  • I was nice to him in Episode 1 and then he waltzes in, takes over my company and becomes a total ass! He's no longer Oz. He is Penguin now!

  • He'll always be Oz to me :'(

  • Tbh I'd rather he stay the penguin

  • I'm not asking for a full on redemption arc, he was a really good villain after all. I just really hated that scene because of the way Bruce acted no matter which dialogue option you picked.

  • Nah man, he uses comic sans. There's no redeeming that.

But seriously, I think it's too late for redemption now. Telltale had an oppurtunity in episode 5 and they messed it up. Good news though, since he always ends up in the same place with the broken leg while still hating Bruce/Batman, I'd say his appearence in Season 2 is pretty much guaranteed. (Just a guess, don't take it for granted. :p)

  • I was nice to the dude, but he end up being a dick. So no. He's pretty much destined to be an enemy for Bruce and Batman. Will not give up on Harvey though

  • I'm really beginning to think that nobody understood what I was saying.

  • Didn't really like the Penguin, and felt we weren't meant to either. Despite a few funny lines as a character he definitely is beyond redemption right from the start. Would keep him on ice for this 'season' and reconsider bringing him back next one as a minor boss or something.

  • I disagree. Oz is a really likeable character but not only that, he has understandable motivation. I don't expect a whole redemption arc but the character deserved a better ending than he got.

  • I hate how they handled Oz. He was a one dimensional pawn of Vicki by Ep4.

You're welcome to be wrong and read more into a character than there really was, but that doesn't change the fact that the Penguin of S01 was pretty much a cardboard cutout as villains go, with the only curveball being the fact that Bruce -might- feel differently about him. What exactly made him likeable? A single funny joke and the fact that he's willing to screw you out of everything you own for crimes of your father?

We were given no real reason to suspect that Penguin at any point felt guilty about trying to screw a man who (may have) thought of him as a friend, nor any particular reason to think he's anything more than a criminal climbing his way up the ladder and piles of dead bodies to take over Wayne Enterprises.

Really... the most satisfying moment in the whole game for me was beating his stupid face in and breaking his leg. All that pitiful bluster for so little substance.

Plus, as ScootyZ noted: he's just a pawn with one dimension.

  • And here I thought I was in for a mature discussion but no you decide to start this with "You're wrong"

Regarding what ScootyZ said, they seem to be suffering from split personality as a few comments above they said Oz has true motivation and isn't one dimensional.

In terms of likeability it's more than him saying something funny. The character is incredibly entertaining as well as charming. But that's not all there is to him. He suffered an injustice at the hands of Bruce's father. He took everything from his family and even took his actual family. His mother unjustly commited to Arkham and then his father took his own life. He has real understandable motivation and he isn't evil. He wants to expose Gotham's corruption and hypocrisy and in his own words, start a revolution. He's a villain and he hates you, there's no denying that but that doesn't mean I have to hate him.

But this is all just my opinion and how I feel about his character. Disagree all you want but don't arrogantly suggest that I'm wrong.

Once again, I believe you're reading more into a character than there is. I can certainly see why you'd want to view him in a more interesting light than he is presented, but having just replayed the game I have to admit I am not seeing it. The potential for a character to be as interesting and charming as you say is there, but it's tall taken away by complete lack of actual depth in how your interaction affects him. No matter how you treat him Penguin will sort of respect the Bat whilst treating Bruce with utter contempt, meaning he has either set his mind; ergo being a cardboard cutout we're supposed to bludgeon, or then simply Telltale not having enough resources or interest in actually making him a fully realised character. Frankly I never found him funny or charming in the least... unlike Harvey who is actually a compelling character in his own right.

His motivation for 'starting a revolution' are not interesting and frankly it just reeks of the self-serving bs that he throws around through the entire game. Seeing as that's all we have to go on to make him sympathetic or interesting I'm forced to conclude he is a bland villain... room temperature interest at best. Not the worst I've seen, but definitely not worth another appearance unless he's torn down and rewritten from top to bottom.

  • I suppose there is that. I'd absolutely love for him to return. I just can't get over how that scene was done. There's this really emotional scene with Harvey but with Oz... I don't even know how to describe it. You can only play it one way and I hated that way.

  • No, that wasn't my point. Reokay that scene at the end of episode 4. He refused to listen to any reasoning at all. He was so loyal to Vicki, that is what makes a villain bad. This is EXACTLY what makes a villain one dimensional. He sacrificed himself for Vicki, that IS NOT Oz. It is what we all call a forgetable one dimensional super-villain. He had no reason whatsoever to do so. I agree, he is interesting at first, but all that potential was stripped off him.

In addition to what Oloigarchy had said, Harvey was an actual compelling character who had true motivation. Oz had it too, but Telltale messed up his character by Episode 3.

  • I love Oz but he isn't exactly reasonable. What we saw from him in episode 4 was loyalty. He couldn't see that Lady Arkham was using him because he was loyal and believed in her mission. Like he says "I'm not a pawn, I'm a soldier and I'll die before I sell out the cause!"

  • You know, that makes me wonder what kind of relationship those two exactly had. Did they bicker a lot, did they agree on everything or was Oz following every of her orders without any questions? Shame we never saw them interact, (except during the debate, but that doesn't really count) I'd be very much interested in that stuff. :)

  • It's a good question. I often wonder who recruited who because Vicki is clearly in charge but some dialogue seems to imply that Oz started the whole thing. In episode 1 Oz calls it HIS revolution and in the episode 4 fight Batman can say "This started with you and it ends with Lady Arkham."

The game basically forces you to treat him badly and hate him,

So ? He steal your company, he crashed your most meaningful gift from Alfred, in ep1 he threatened you for being powerful and rich, he bashed Harvey's face so he ruined his life(Determinant), he tried to hack your tech and almost got it and lastly he wanted a pure revenge for his family's deceased status which has nothing to do with Bruce.

So, dont judge the game for not giving shiny options against Oz.

  • Well one of the great things about this game is that you could play your Batman/Bruce however you wanted and to have those options taken away sucked.

Cobblepot does not deserve a second chance. He is a murderer and a douchebag.

I regret going soft on him. Next time he can say goodbye to his legs.
