  • Have had Hunter X Hunter, Dragonball Super, and My Hero Academia as the main things on DVR since they each started. The former ended three or so weeks ago, bittersweetly.

Also been gradually watching Attack on Titan via stream; the first couple of episodes months ago, everything up to the Season 2 finale over last few weeks until yesterday. It's an alright show, if one that does feel a little weird when it comes to...its purpose(s)?

    The Society on Netflix

  • I've been watching Season 3 of Attack on Titan throughout this week and, after going to the effort of tracking down a place where I could catch up with the rest of it, watched many of the recently aired episodes from what I understand.
I think I just watched a great breaking point cause man.
    (For extremely minimal, non-spoilerly context)

It's listed as episode 18 within the season.

  • Went ahead and finished off Attack on Titan Season 3. Just like those youtube comments for the 3rd(or rather Season 2 in general's) Ending said(and I suspected the first few times I saw it), it makes sense now. In conjunction with answering a few questions I had after certain revelations in the first arc of the.

Gotta say that I'm vaguely aware of some of the initial stuff that's coming in Season 4, as despite using the Wayback Machine on sites like TVTropes to specifically avoid spoilers, some extra stuff constantly leaked in. Having both the episode and chapter lists on standby for reference, I know why: it seems that almost every time a couple of episodes seems to finish on a good stopping point, the manga actually has that as the halfway point of a volume.

Ah well, nothing to do but once again attend to other things while I wait for Season 4. Which, if the episode lists is any indication, will probably air a mere few weeks after it airs in Japan.

I know i am really late but recently i started watching American Horror Story, so far i have only watched seasons 1&2 and really enjoyed both of them.

  • I'm watching "Cats" trailer again and again and it looks... AMAZING. They've turned actors into real cats. Awesome work cgi specialists. Can't wait to see it on in IMAX.

  • For the love of everything that is good and right in this world, please do yourself a favour don't watch the new Netflix "documentary" Enter The Anime.

The documentary, aimed to find out more about the genre of "Anime" and what it's about, is a horribly misguided, misleading, and an insulting look at the genre itself. It is literally a 1hr advertisement for new Netflix Original anime series, with the exception of Evangelion, though Netflix holds the first exclusive streaming rights to it. Nearly all the of the series focused on in the film have been released within the past 2 years, and about 4 of them I know have been released in the past 6 months.
In short, point form, I'll quickly go through a rundown of what this doc is about.

    • The director/host of the documentary -- Alex Burunova -- is a self-proclaimed noob to the genre. She wanted to know more about it, and decided to make a documentary about her discoveries along the way. But for some reason she's only looking at Netflix-produced series that have been released very recently. (So, doing a documentary about something you know nothing about, and essentially dipping your toes in the shallow end of the grand anime ocean)
    • Alex goes out to interview various creators and directors of Netflix Anime, saying that the craft itself -- and these creators -- are all 'crazy, insane, twisted, batshit' or any other synonym of those words. They also have a very large focus on 'crazy' anime about brutal boxing, vampires, post-apocalyptic survival, etc. If it's got violence, then it's really out-there....
    • They do mention the huge fashion industry based on Anime properties, and of course all those who wear such designs and cosplay as characters are really crazy for doing so.
    • The very small section on the iconic music of anime is relegated to the very iconic theme song to Neon Genesis Evangelion -- the one non-Netflix made series in the film whose name is never mentioned on-screen.
    • The host -- trying to be as edgy as the anime she's covering, very occasionally inserts some swear words to be all cool, but it's clearly not.
    • Despite starting off by saying they'll try to answer the question of "What is Anime?" (Without even looking up a definition of it first), and constant teases that it's an industry with a long legacy, they never really look at any anime from decades past or of its origins, nor talk about any prominent films/series (Studio Ghibli is probably the most well-known/mainstream name in anime, but there's not a single allusion to their company.).
Just when you think they'll talk about something from long ago -- and the script mentions "I wanted to go back to its roots, and see how it all started" they proceed to talk about a new CGI series they're making, that comes from a company with a long un-mentioned legacy...

    • Speaking of making anime, there's practically nothing shown of how they make anime series, who specifically makes them, or the process of it as a whole. There's a tiny bit in the last 15 minutes about some small sections of producing the animation (animatics, effects, modeling), but it's extremely minimal at most.

    • The credits seriously start with the line "all anime titles covered in this documentary are available now and streaming on Netflix"

OH yeah and then there's this great line:

Toei [Animation] is anime. It's for kids. It's like the country's Disney, except instead of a mouse, their mascot is a cat. Suck it, Disney...

Da fuck? uhhh that came out of nowhere.

  • ... Why would they make a documentary meant to promote a product on their service, only for the documentary to repeatedly insult the product they're trying to promote? What kind of big brain logic is this?

I haven't watched it and I'm basing this off of everything you said but I feel like the documentary could have worked, even if it ended up being a huge ad, if they had actually gotten someone who seemed at all interested in learning and understanding the genre, audience and culture, and of course focused on the behind the scenes magic.

  • Yeah, it was a pretty agonizing, and frankly wasteful 58 minutes. There were multiple points where I considered leaving it in the dust, but I stuck with it just hoping it would get better.

I'd have to say my favourite part were the short glimpses at the production of 'Rilakkuma and Kaoru' the first(?) stop-motion "kawaii anime", as it was really cool to see the physical, handcrafted sets and characters, and seeing the different sizes of figures and props they use depending on the camera angle.

And while some of the anime they do cover could be classified as 'crazy', such as an anime about large, muscular men who beat each other bloody and bruised in an arena, or even a cute Sanrio character who works at a demeaning office job, but secretly unleashes her anger with death metal karaoke.
It's just that they seem to paint the entire genre of anime as being "out-there" and "crazy", with an army of fanatics who consume its content and it has consumed their lives.

Though if you still want to form your own opinion, you can still check it out yourself. The Doc just doesn't feel like it offers anything really interesting to anime vets or teaches anime newbs anything valuable about the whole thing.

  • You know, I just realized I've never truly commented on here. All I've done is force encourage AChicken to watch Avatar and give me updates on his progress.

I really don't watch all that much TV anymore, but there are a couple shows I'm either watching or interested in. Still watching The Walking Dead, in spite of its hiccups in its later seasons.

The only other show I'm watching right now is The Dragon Prince on Netflix.

It was co-created by Aaron Ehasz (former head writer of Avatar) and Justic Richmond (co-director of Uncharted 3). It's a bit hit and miss in regards to both animation and humor, but it really is a great show. Strong writing, interesting characters, great action scenes, a morally grey antagonist, and (albeit borrowing somewhat heavily from Avatar) a well-defined and growing lore. Plus, Rayla is easily becoming one of my favorite characters ever.

Ehasz has said there's something in Season 3 that's going to be very emotional in regards to her, now I just need Season 3 to get here. They're saying we probably won't know a date until NYCC on October 6th. That's fine, waiting months for Telltale episodes has trained me for this, I can wait.

  • Dumb and Dumber.

I finished Lost a while ago (great show) so i've been watching Shameless lately,it's also great and reminds me a lot of Malcolm In The Middle.

All this talk about Telltale coming back got me thinking of the old Justice League Unlimited show.

  • I'm started watching Breaking Bad Season 2.

  • I'm currently alternating between The Boys and Glow. Both of them are great in their own way (The Boys, in particular, is the one I'm enjoying most. Really addicting).

  • I just recently re-watched the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. Man, I loved it even more than I did as a kid. Next up is probably going to be re-watching the Nolan Dark Knight films or The Amazing Spider-Man series.

As for TV. I'm only currently watching FTWD, which has been terrible for two full seasons now.

  • I'm currently watching Twin Peaks for the first time. I'm in S2E5 now and it really was ahead of its time in many ways. Before watching I thought this was going to be campy and weird to the point of unbearable, but the campy-ness and weirdness are actually really fun. It's like 40% muder mystery, 50% soap drama and 10% supernatural what the fuck-ness.

    I love it.

Make sure to watch twin peaks: fire walk with me and the 2017 season when you’re done with season 2. They’re very different from the original series but they’re also excellent.

Hoooly shit Hasan's killing it with enexpectedly super relatable topics for me this season. (first the Video Game Industry, now Canada?!)
This week's episode is a great crash course on current Canadian controversies surrounding our PM.

  • Patriot Act is just superb. Each episode is great and I think Hasan is one of the best comedians of the last ten years. His stand-up special on Netflix - Homecoming King is also fantastic.

  • I just finished the second season of Breaking Bad. This is the part where things got darker and it was definitely better than Season 1.

  • After playing Alien Isolation, I decided to rewatch the first 2 Alien films the second time, for the 40 year anniversary of first movie. As far as I know, the whole story ended with the second movie. Alien 3 is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, it was garbage from start to finish and it has only one good scene which wasn't enough. This is why I refuse to watch the sequels and prequels. As I as I know, there are only 3 good Alien stories for me:

    • Alien
    • Alien Isolation
    • Aliens

Ooh, this past weekend I watched the new Invader Zim movie on Netflix. I have no knowledge or experience with Invader Zim so this movie was my first time seeing this franchise, but they did a good job giving a newcomer like me an entertaining movie that I can still see there's some history to it.

Probably my favourite joke of the film.

    Oh yeah also this.

Actually, no. There's just too many hilarious moments from the movie. It's great.

  • Trying to narrow down the funniest part of the movie?

  • tbh prometheus is pretty good so i wouldn't write that one off. yes it has some goofy shit (i know the cinemasins joke is very not funny but seriously just run to the left you fucking pinheads) and the story gets meddled near the end but it's a solid sci-fi movie. alien 3 however is VERY iffy and suffers a lot from studio meddling, and alien: resurrection and covenant are like watching a loved one die in front of you

  • i've been watching bojack horseman again since there's no release date for season 6 quite yet, and i've been slowly working through my 2019 watchlist. i'm at 59 films so far, got about 36 more to get through.

  • Yeah, I heard that Prometheus is pretty divisive but I already know I'm not gonna like it as much as the first Alien films since I've heard of that infamous scene.

I just can't stand Alien 3. There is no movie that pissed me off much more than that shit and I made my choice of the worst film I've seen in my entire life. I already wanted to stop watching after seeing the first 5 minutes of the movie and I wish I did. Killing off everyone (except Ripley) who survived the previous film in their sleep due to facehugger attack and ship crash was nothing but one of the shittiest ideas and writings anyone could have ever agreed on. It ruins the story of Aliens and it forced me to forget about Ripley's best adventure. I did hear that Alien Resurrection and AVP: Requiem were worse movies but I can't consider them so because I don't ever plan on watching them and I can't have a full opinion on a movie I've never seen.

  • i totally understand your perspective. personally i like a lot of what alien 3 did and think there's some genuinely cool stuff it added to the alien universe, however there are a LOT of issues with it, and i'm sure it opening up with a "fuck you" to all the fans of the previous 2 films doesn't help. i don't think it's bad but i totally understand the perspective that it is because sheesh it's got some red flags.

  • I finally concurred my fear and watched ‘The Exorcist’. I was first traumatised when the phase of ‘The Scary Maze Game’ surfaced in primary school.

  • I watched The I - Land. Could have been an interesting show if they didn't rush through the story the way it did.

Now I'm watching Marianne, a French horror show. I'm really enjoying it. It's nice and creepy and I like the characters in it.

Since the co-creator was involved with Avatar as a former head writer, are there any easter eggs from Avatar?

You know, I just realized I've never truly commented on here. All I've done is force encourage AChicken to watch Avatar and give me updates

  • There is one in the very first episode. One of the characters, Claudia, is reading a book called "Love Amongst The Dragons." In Avatar, there's an episode where the group goes to watch a play version of their journey by a group called The Ember Island Players, who Zuko voices his dislike for as they botch the play "Love Amongst The Dragons" every year.

You also have some notable Avatar voice actors in the show (the voice actor who played Sokka plays the main character Callum, and the VA of Koh the Face Stealer is an elf named Aaravos).

Since the co-creator was involved with Avatar as a former head writer, are there any easter eggs from Avatar?
