I won at Tic Tac Doom, but the COPS won't give me the talisman. What do I do?

edited January 2008 in Sam & Max's House of Hints
I beat the COPS at Tic Tac Doom, but they won't give me their talisman. How do I make them give it to me? Max's hint didn't help me. Please tell me. Thanks.

Sinistar's like a little kid... he would *really* like to win...

    Hint:
It's better to have played and lost than to have won and recieved nothing at all

Random comments that are incredibly spoilery:
I thought this puzzle was absolutely BRILLIANT.

Everyone plays to win. So by making a Tic-tac-toe AI that is easy to win against, you can be fairly sure most people will win unless they're trying not to.

But it gets better. Telltale made a Tic-tac-toe AI that is HARD to LOSE against. Which is of course the point of the puzzle. You won't lose by accident, and yet you won't normally think to win on purpose.

It's absolutely one of the best designed puzzles I've ever seen.

Maybe some people will never solve this puzzle because they're too proud of themselves to lose on purpose

This isn't a hint, it is a flat out spoiler. So don't read unless you've completed Ep 6
It made me cringe solving this puzzle. My pride made it difficult, but it if killing Hugh meant loosing my pride, it would have to be.

Nice puzzle, but it's not too original (SPOILERS for sam & max episode 6)
In Kyrandia 3 (old PC game): there was also a Tic Tac Toe game you had to lose in order to progress (with the opponent having a similar playing style)
... And who knows if that was the first instance of this puzzle as well? But then again, I can't expect all puzzles to be original.

I was actually wondering about this, was that game really designed to be
    hard to LOOSE from
?? I sure looked that way to me, which I thought was a great touch.

I'll be off to attempt some progress in the remainder of that episode though, kinda lost at the moment :)

At first glance, it might appear the AI for Tic Tac Doom is extremely bad. But actually it's at a whole new level of advanced algorithms that the world has never seen before. It's very... Unconventional! :p
Yes, it was definately made to be hard to lose. That's why the AI is actually as good as the COPS said it was. :p

Its not actually that difficult to lose...although I had some practice because I lost 16 games in a row to my friend once...XD I know...that sucks...what I found was that it was kinda annoying (not hard...annoying) to win..because the AI put the circles in totally random positions...but losing wasnt too hard...just a matter of forcing yourself to lose in the first place...

Actually, no. The AI TRIES to lose. If you'll look, it's not placing them in random locations, it's placing them in the optimal locations to ensure that it loses. The goal is to be better than it at losing, and it's actually quite hard when it knows what it's doing.

I actually remember 5 years ago when I was learning Java I was given an assignment to create a Tic Tac Toe game. For the first phase, I focused on the graphical user interface and didn't want to implement an AI, so I just made the AI completely random.

I remember after a few rounds of playing, I found out that the random AI is very hard to lose to, and had a lot of fun playing it for a while, trying to lose...

I guess I can see now that it is trying to lose...as I said though, it wasnt that difficult to lose...you just have to dictate where it places the circles...maybe an interesting sort of test is if you can play for a draw...I wonder if anyone has done this...

You have to lose at Tic Tac Doom then the C.O.P.S. will think they are advanced and made a hard AI and will give you the talisman.

It's that easy well not realy you have to give him 2 in a row and 1 open in a 3-in-a-row style so when he's all out of other moves he'll go for the last one and bam they'll think they made a super advanced AI and rub it in Sam's face then he'll make it seem as if he lost because the game was too hard then Max will wanna beat them but never gets the chance then the arcade game guy will open his insert coins here thing and you'll be able to get the talisman

And that's how you get past:D
