Bone Tax

Update: I've now gone ahead with the order anyway. Please still let me know if the tax was a mistake or not though still. :)

I am trying to purchase the $19.99 deal of the two Bone games, and I have got to the checkout and it says:

Bone: Out from Boneville (Download Bundle)
Windows XP
Electronic Download
19.99USD

Bone: The Great Cow Race (Free Download)
Windows XP
Electronic Download
0.00USD

Sub-Total: 19.99USD
Tax: 3.00USD
Total: 22.99USD

I was just wondering why I am getting charged tax for something I am downloading? I don't remember getting charged tax when I downloaded Sam and Max Season 1.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance. :)

Regards,
Guybrush Threepwood.

I did get charged tax for Season 1. It appears that tax works differently for downloadable items than for physical goods (which I've never been taxed for on the internet). My guess is that this difference is because for downloadable goods it cannot be sufficiently checked that the buyer isn't in fact local (as typically sales tax applies only to local customers).

Surely the fact that I've put I'm from Non US will show that I'm not local?

I may have got charged for S&M Season 1, I just don't remember it.

Please could Emily or somewhere clear this issue for me? I'm sorry to cause a fuss, I was just reading on another thread that someone was having tax issues with your store, so I thought this may be related.

Just had a look about and it looks like most of Europe gets taxed on downloaded items. The EU's probably behind it as usual.
I'm pretty sure I got taxed for Sam and Max, so it's not just Bone.

Most European countries require 15% VAT on downloadable goods. Guybrush, you paid it on Season One, too (I just checked your order).

Seems to be the EU's doing indeed. After some googling I've found some relevant articles. Apparantly the EU mandated a new tax law around 2002, forcing non-EU companies that sell digital stuff to EU residents to collect sales tax.

not only that most things are more expensive here as well for example a ps3 is about double the price of the us version

Yay, seeing as Norway isn't a member of EU, that must be why we're one of the few European countries which doesn't have to pay taxes on downloadable stuff. :D Sadly, it seems we have to pay taxes for hard goods, but oh well.
