Just another Launching problem...

Hi guys :)

At first : Sorry for my nickname, it just all went wrong today and when the registration window refused at first to accept a chosen nickname i got
hopping mad, chose the first word that came to my mind, it was granted and i then noticed i'm not able to alter it anymore :D

@The Problem:
Like some of the others here in the Forum i also have problems starting up Sam & Max. Season 1 worked well on my engine and downloading and installing s02e01, too...well at first. After i wanted to start the game it asked me for my mail adress and the passwort. I typed it in, clicked on "send", waited... then the window which is attached to this post appeared. It just kept staying there... you can click the buttom for the newsletter at the bottom of the window, but the window itself won't change. You can still minimize, move and close the window but there's nothing like "Start the game"

What could it be ?
thanks for help

I have the same exact issue- The first time playing the game, no problem. Now all I have is the option for the newsletter. Help me, Telltale Games, you're my only hope!

    (or someone else clever...)

I have exactly the same problem as OP. Irritatingly it worked flawlessly only an hour ago.

I'm having the same problem here, It's been sitting at that screen for 10 minutes, nothing happens, no buttons to push like "start" or anything.
    Please, someone help!

    same here

armand : here the same... the game hasn't worked at all. Not even for 5 minutes

I had the same screen. I closed the launcher, disconnected from the Internet and started the game again. And there was the "Launch Game" button.

I guess you already have to be registred for the game so you can start offline but maybe it will work for you, too.

    I even tried re-installing it...no dice.

Disconnecting worked, thanks. It's annoying, though.

There has to be a way to fix this without having to disconnect my modem. I mean, its a cable modem, so it's kinda annoying to do this when I wanna play

I'm sure Telltale will handle this issue very fast but I don't see a better/faster solution at the moment. The most important thing for me is to be able to play. ;)

@Mil: Hey, danke man, der Tipp hat's gebracht ^^

Mil's suggestion of disconnecting really works !
  • edited November 2007
For those of you who have to disconnect, please send me an email at tabacco at telltalegames.com -- I'd like to get your help testing a fix in the next day or so, since I can't reproduce the problem myself.

I just found a way to make it work without completely disconnecting your Internet but it's only good if you regularly use a browser other than IE. Just open up IE-->File--->Work Offline and the game will work.
  • edited November 2007
That worked for me, thanks dude.

If you just started having this problem, it should be fixed now.
  • edited November 2007
Magically the game now works, I've not touched anything, so whoever plugged whatever they kicked out, back in, good job =)
  • edited November 2007
Yes! It works! Thanks...lets see LucasArts fix a problem that fast.

Sorry if I bother you even now that the problem is solved, but if you somehow fixed the logging in bug, the fix doesn't work for me. Or I'm forced to install IE7, then it DOES work?

You only have to log in ONCE to be able to play the game. Your saying your first login fails? Do you get an error saying so?

I had trouble logging it at first, had to retype the password really carefully. For some reason copy/paste refused to work?

Weirdly enough ep201 now consistently starts in 'offline mode' no idea why. It's authorised, so it runs and no complaints from me but it does look weird. And no I'm not 'working offline'.

Should I download ep201 again? Mine is fairly old, since I bought the entire season2 once it became available :)

'Offline Mode' is something Jake and I are going to rename in future releases. All it means it that the launcher tried to get the community content and gave up because of a timeout or an error.

I can't log, that's the same problem as this topic was intended for.
I'm trying to guess that I need IE7, but I need a confirm.

Well, I just downloaded the game this morning, 12/8/07, and I am having this same issue.

I unlocked it with my username and password, and then nothing. No way to start the game.

Could you please try the patch located here:

    http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3995

Let me know if that helps.

I discovered something. I does work if I choose "work offline" in IE 7, because then the game launcher says "Offline mode."

I have Norton Personal Firewall, and at first I thought that that might be the trouble, but when I go into the configuration section of Norton, Sam & Max is set to "Permit all."

Still, when I go to the system tray and disable Norton for 5 min, then the launcher works great, and not even in offline mode. It shows online just fine.

Will the patch disable online mode altogether?
  • edited December 2007
No, the patch doesn't disable online mode. It just fixes a few problems that can cause what you're seeing (as described in the thread I linked to)
  • edited December 2007
Ok, I installed the patch and so here's what it does now:

If I have Norton Personal Firewall enabled, then the launcher comes up with "Offline Mode" but it lets me launch the game.

If I disable Norton, then the launcher comes up on line just fine and I can see all the news, blog, forums, etc.
  • edited December 2007
Perfect. The wrapper does an AJAX request to our serve rto get the forum stuff. When it fails, you get online mode. Sounds like Norton is blocking that request.
  • edited December 2007
Hm... ok, so how do I get Norton to quit blocking it?

I have the program set to "permit all" connections already. It shouldn't be blocking anything.
  • edited December 2007
    Sorry, I can't help you there, I've never used Norton's firewall :(

Ajax isn't a 'connection' it is a 'ad' , for Norton anyway.

Norton ad-blocking will kill a lot of Ajax stuff. Best thing to do is add www.telltale.com to your 'ad allowed' lists or whatever those are called nowadays.

You'll have to look up exact instructions on the Norton site.

And PLEASE set your firewall back to 'permit selective' or whatever but get it OFF 'permit all' that's asking for problems.
  • edited December 2007
*.telltalegames.com would be the actual domain to add
  • edited December 2007
It's not set to permit all for everything. It's very selective. Only trusted programs get set to that, and even then you instruct it which connections to allow, what protocol, etc.

I don't recall any settings for "ad" blocking, however. I'll have to look it over again.
  • edited December 2007
Ok, I found the settings, but after entering telltalegames.com, it wants me to enter specific URL strings that it should permit, and I've no idea what to put for that.

If I just enter the domain name alone, it isn't effective.
  • edited December 2007
All you're missing out on in offline mode is forum and blog updates, you know. There's no actual game functionality that's missing.

If it still looks the same it did in 2003, when you add the domain name it appears in a list to the left. On the right you have three tabs.

Select domain name on the left, then choose the 3rd tab on the right which should be 'ad blocking'. You want to ADD an item.

In the 'add item' box set the option to PERMIT and text to just a slash (single / ). Press OK and check if it indeed has added 'PERMIT /' to the list for telltale.

That should do it. It permits basically ALL urls as ad's from telltale.

Oh yeah, you only need to connect the game ONCE to unlock/activate it. So you should good to go already :)
  • edited December 2007
Also, activating the game is totally separate from 'offline mode' -- that doesn't use ajax, and doesn't have anything to do with the launcher retrieving community updates.
