(PS3)Walking Dead EP.4 Save File(s) Corrupted

I was playing through Episode 4 on my first play-through. At 7:05pm CST my game was in the middle of a cutscene when it appeared to auto-save and then freeze. A window popped up and said "Save Data File Corrupted, Will Re-create". After I pressed X nothing happened so I was forced to hard restart my PS3. When I logged back into the game the same message appeared with the option to Press X. I did and when I was able to play again all 3 of my save files were deleted. Two were complete play-throughs up to Episode 3 and the third was complete up to Episode 2. I realize this is a probably a futile effort but I'd really like them back if possible. My PSN ID is Voorhees. Thanks.

There's still value, it's an awesome game. But man I REALLY don't want to try and remember the 1)"Mean" choices 2)"Good" choices and 3) My choices all over again.

The same thing happened to me on the PS3. I started playing Episode 4 of The Walking Dead. I got about an hour into it and then the game froze randomly while I was walking around. This weird message popped up saying "Save Data Corrupt" and I had to restart the PS3. When I tried to boot up the game the same data message popped up again, but then I went to "Play Game". I looked and ALL my save data was erased.

14 hours I put into this series and it's all just gone. I bought every episode of The Walking Dead so far and I loved playing it. This sucks. Now I'm afraid to even try playing it over again because other people keep saying that the problem keeps happening to them even after they play it over.

    My PSN ID is darkscanner

This was the message I had:
    Walking_Dead_Save_Data_Corrupted.jpg

It happened at the beginning of episode 4, when Kenny fell down. (For me it was on my second run)

    Agreed.

I also had this same issue. I had two saves going as my roommate was playing through the game as well. I had already completed chapter 4 without an issue, but as my roommate was nearing the end of chapter 4 he kept getting the "corrupt save, will recreate" message.

He just would press X and carry-on playing until eventually he died and the same message popped up. When he pressed X this time the game just stayed black. If he pressed the ps button, the xmb would pop-up, but otherwise we were stuck. We quit the game and then when we fired it back up again, everything was gone, my save included. It was as if we had never played the game before.

I am definitely interested in hearing if there is any sort of fix for this, but I feel like I am hosed either way since my saves are now gone. Any update to this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I received the same message text, though I can't be sure of the number displayed. For me, it was my first run, and it happened as I was scouting out the harbor. Was walking toward the telescope when it froze, showed that message, and then, what everyone else described. Freeze never unfroze. Had to hard disco, restart. Said save files were corrupt, and had to recreate, and instead of just losing the one game, it seems to have wiped out all three games that I had saved.

Does this "investigation" also apply to other platforms ? Because, well.. if you didn't notice PC & XBox users also encounter this issue since a while.

That's one thing that you leave to unpaid volunteers the task of finding workarounds for YOUR customers so they can play the game. That's also one thing that in 24h you still didn't acknowledge there is download & save issues with the version YOU sell in YOUR own e-shop. But that would really be one thing that your support ressources would only go to a selected platform.

    Please prove me wrong ?

I had the same thing happen to me. "An Error Occurred During the Save Operation" followed by "Corrupt Save Data, Will Recreate" and a frozen game. Rebooted my PS3, all three of my save files are gone.

Guess who isn't buying season two, now?

I have the same problem. Purchased my PS3 around a month when they first came out...I have the original version. Never have had a save error before till a day ago.

I was controlling Lee in the house on episode 4 when I walked up to examine the dog food bag it froze. Said that the save file was corrupted and would attempt to recreate. I hit X button hear beep then another beep and game froze. Waited 8 minutes and nothing so I power down PS3 and restart to find out all 3 of my saved games are gone. Yeah real unhappy about that...all that time and effort down the drain.

From the looks of these forums I'm not alone, and I expect more of these posts to pile up as well. Telltale I would suggest you take these posts seriously. Players will only replay through the game so many times...now with the knowledge that after playing through it again only to lose all data a second time means people will stop playing your game till a fix comes out.

Personally I wont purchase another episode or play the game till a fix is released.

Same thing happened to me first day of release. I was playing it a second time around, as I always do, and I got to the harbor where you meet Molly and it went corrupt. A similar problem happened with episode 2 maybe it could be a recurring bug in the system. I just got up to episode 3 and I'm waiting for a patch until I continue. I was understanding with the episode 2 glitch because of the preassure of the fans ya'll were getting and I'll be understanding with this glitch I know you guys are just a small company, but ya'll have a hugely popular game of a well known franchise, I just hope you guys get everything refined and smooth with season two and the hard copy. I hope ya'll get a patch out ASAP I love this series and I refuse to give up on it. Maybe for compensation we can get a Chuck or Carly/Doug DLC.

Not exactly sure of the text, but it's about the same for me. Mine was my first run through of Episode 4 and I was also scouting the harbor. I was walking towards the news stand and then the game froze. It said "Save Data Corrupt" and then it said "Will Recreate". It wouldn't unfreeze though, so I had to restart the PS3. When I booted up game the same messages popped up again, but it let me play. That's when I saw that all three games that I had saved were erased.

I think I'm starting to see a pattern here. It looks like it's happening to people who had three different play throughs saved. What do you guys say?
  • edited October 2012
I have the EXACT same problem. I'm going through episode 4 for the first time, I approach the news stand at the harbor and I get... "save data corrupt. will recreate". the PS3 then freezes. I have to manually reboot the PS3 and now all my saved games are gone!

Thats hours of my time GONE. What kind of morons are working on this game that would allow this kind of bug to happen on a full release. Havent you guys heard of beta testing? Of course not, lazy programmers like you dont bother and just let the public at large be your beta testers without the common decency of letting us make the choice. Its pathetic that companies employ people of this caliber. If they were in my employ, they would not be in my employ.

I was going to the jewspaper machine to get change when the game froze up. I wish we could get a TT group response again to know some progress.

Same here. I just lost all my saves due to corruption in Episode 4, while walking backwards the stairs in the armory. I never had a problem before, but then same message as the other people here, the only thing I was able to do is confirm the message that my save files are going to be rebuilt. Next time I start the Game all my save slots were empty. WAY TO GO! GREAT FUCKUP TELLTALE !

Assuming that we can't recreate our save files, put out a patch that

    1. solves this hangups.
    2. ensure that there are multiple Auto Saves being stored, so that in case this happens again we can simply just load the save before the corrupted one. (I have no idea how this was not included in the first place, must be just plain stupidity !!!)
    3. why the hell do all save file slots get deleted if one save gets corrupted??
    4. and finally put an option in, that let us start Episodes with choices that we can decide to make and not only random ones, so that we at least haven't wasted all the hours just to get these corrupted save files.

I am mad and hope their will be a solution to this game breaking problems.

My exact situation was this. I already played through Episode 4 once, and then decided to play it again in a new file with different choices. I got so close to finishing it again, when the game froze as I was leaving the doctor's office to grab the tape off his dead body (for Christa and Vernon). I got, "Save Data Corrupted, attempting to recreate" and then the game froze. I finally had to restart it, and when I did the same message appeared. Now all of my save files are gone.

I already suffered through this when it first happened with the "2 complete saves and working on a third" situation after Episode 3 came out, and now I have to play it all AGAIN. In truth, I have plenty of time to do this before Episode 5 comes out, but I shouldn't have to. I love this game but I'm tired of these situations happening.

    I don't think it'll make a difference, but I have the original PS3.

EDIT: To avoid any confusion, I got the same exact error message that was posted earlier. I also only had two saved files because I thought this wouldn't happen again if I didn't make a third save file like before. But nope, fooled again.

While I don't know if another voice will help, it certainly can't hurt at this point. I've just lost my save files. The game played fine through episode 4 the first time even with a second save on my profile. Today, a friend of mine plays his game and gets as far as leaving the nurse's office to get the second video tape and I get the save file corrputed / will re-build message before the system locks up and needs a hard re-set. (It's the Backward compatible 80 Gig PS3 model). I have a backup on PS+ so I re-loaded it and we played through again only to have it happen again in the exact same spot. Until I came here and saw the other problem I thought my software was screwed up as a waning sign the system was about to go. There are only the two saves on the single profile. The third slot is empty.

I'm hoping for a quick fix that carries over into episode 5. We're really looking foreward to seeing how it all ends.

PS, at the very least, can a patch take the copy protection off our saves. If they're going to crap out at random I'd like a backup copy I can access more than once in a 24 hour period?

A new patch has been released that will resolve this issue. Please restart your game and you will be prompted to install the v1.03 patch.

Please note, if you received the corrupted save message and exited to the XMB (Sony dashboard), then you will need to rewind 1 checkpoint before continuing your game. If you have never received this message, or pulled down an unaffected save from cloud storage, you can continue your game as normal.

I have a different problem, on XBL I can only load my 3rd save file, the other two will not open for some reason, also i was never prompted for a patch maybe that was for PSN only?

something about Corrupt data / will recreate, only option was X, couldn't hit the ps button an end game. so I restarted manually...lol, an I heard it has to do with Play Station plus, an how you have to be a member to have online data saved...? but there were no warnings. an also in the game Lee looked upward heavenly like, an floated to the top floor in the house where they had the doggy door, I knew something was up when I seen that. lol....
  • edited October 2012
tried the patch.(i did see the warning), still no games in my save...screw it just went to empty slot 3(but all are empty), an went to chapter 4 i think. I still love this game.

This issue did not affect plus members differently that non-plus members. Plus members have access to cloud storage, so they had the ability to back-up their saves. We were able to find the exact cause for this issue and have corrected this, so as long as you have the v1.03 patch, you should not experience save corruption again.

I do apologize for the issue being there in the first place. For those who lost their saves and do not want to repeat prior episodes to set their choices, you can start a new game at the beginning of any episode and randomized choices will be created for you.

I loaded up my game before of episode 4 and it loads up the very beginning of the episode 1, I leave the game and and it over written over all my save data. I looked up what to do and deleted my entire episode of episode 4 and started to try and do episode 3 save but the same thing happened. I hope a patch fixes this and that I get all my deleted data back because it wrong and utterly unfair!!!

I'm playing in the UK and my save files have also been corrupted and disappeared. When the gang get to Crawford and inside the building, it froze and I got the same message as everyone else has been reporting.

This is pretty outrageous to be honest. It seems you guys fixed the issue in the US before it was even released here and I'm still losing saves. Not cool, especially after how much longer we have to wait in Europe for the game to get here which I've always heard put down to bug testing!

Also, the entire point of this game is that it adapts to choices you make. If my save has been deleted, it's not exactly consolation that I can always load Episode 4 with randomized choices. This is absolutely ridiculous and EXTREMELY unprofessional.

When does this 1.03 patch come to Eu psn? Because it's not here in sweden and my saves just deleted?
  • edited October 2012
I had two saves,my choices and my silent and indecisive Lee, all gone and corrupted on my second playthrough,at the end with Ben in the bell tower!!!

Damn it! I knew I should of waited for the EU psn patch but knowing them they'll take until the end of the month to release it! Seems pretty stupid to release the episode before the fix ,for a known issue, was released.
I love this game and It could be my GOTY but the bugs and save problems are too detrimental to forgive it's flaws, losing all your saves is a major issue Telltale! it should of been noticed. Playing again to to choose differently is great but having to play everything exactly the same again ,so you can continue as you originally were, is tedious!!!

I've also watched a few playthroughs and it seems that the PS3 version is,sadly, the weaker one due to frame rate issues and freezing. Two of the bigger freezes I have experienced and seen for the PS3 version are fighting Andy ST john and shooting the walker that grabs Kenny(didn't notice these on the other versions).

Telltale really need to work on a large patch after they finish episode 5 and before they release the box version!!! Do not rush to release the final product!

Episode 1 was the less buggy and more stable one but episode 3 has a lot of graphical bugs(invisible RV,invisible Duck,Chuck and Kenny standing up when they should be sitting, map covering Kenny's face in the train, camera going outside the train and have to restart chapter, unresponsive controls and Lee still holding his gun while a parallel one is holstered after the train station.

Iv'e played Back to the Future and I never noticed any bugs! why is The Walking Dead so infected with them?

The same thing happened me.I lost all my saves it said it would recreate them but just deleted them.My PSN id is rko24.This is really frustrating I dont want to have to go back and make all the same choices again to see how it ends.Although the game is awesome

My PS3 is currently frozen behind me after my 2nd playthrough, properly frozen, no way back to the XMB without shutting the machine off, so I guess I'm stuffed. More annoying, I'm wondering why this wasn't auto-patched as soon as I started the game.

hey, everyone. been looking everywhere for any news regarding a patch or fix for the same problem everybody seems to have experienced. read the post that said ver. 1.03 was out and got to it as fast as possible, but lo and behold: things are pretty much still messed up... any thoughts/comments/suggestions will be greatly appreciated. btw, my psn id's RiffRaffRicky, if it's worth mentioning. oh, and another thing to mr. mattp from the telltale team, up there @ #23 and #27: RANDOMIZED CHOICES SUCK! wasn't the whole point of the game that we forged our own character relations/destinies on our own?

This sucks dude. I completed episode 4 fine. My girlfriend was just about to finish episode 4 on her play through when the data got currupted. Now we both have to re-play the whole game to see how 'our' story will end. No, i don't want to start at episode 5 when it comes out and get random choices, i put alot of time into playing and seeing how my story unfolded, for it all to be lost. Is there no way you could like tag on a mini game on to episode 5 with the major choices covered, so we can somewhat recreate where we were before we lost it all. The whole point of this game was the choices and to see how it effected the characters and how the story would unfold, i feel cheated and robbed. I'll never see the end of my game now. Really enjoyed it, up until the date got wiped and you know why? Because it was my game, my story, not some random choices that i will now have to put up with. I'll play episode 5 for the tropihes, that's about it. All that's left tbh. Sucks, majorly. You've let alot of people down! Well done.

We have submitted the same patch to Sony Europe and are just waiting to hear back. It could take some time, as they need to evaluate the patch with their QA department. Once the patch is approved and released, you will be automatically prompted to download the v1.03 patch when you start your game. I do apologize for the delay.

What good is that to people who have already lost their games? Shame on you tbh, episode 3 was riddled with bugs and now this.

I'm a french player, and it happened to me too. Don't even play on save slot 3, only on 1 and 2. My save got corrupted on my second playthrough of episode 4, just when Lee (spoiler) begins to climb the stairs, before getting his leg trapped.
I left the game immediatly, BEFORE agreeing to recreate my save.
Really hope we will see a patch on european psn, and that this patch will allow us to restart just before the corruption. I don't want to restart it all again and if I do, I can't even be sure this bug won't happen again...Telltale, please don't forget european players !

The v1.03 patch went live this morning for Europe. Please exit to the XMB and restart the game and you will be prompted to install it.

If you saw the corruption message, but immediately exited to the dashboard, your saves should still be in tact, however you need to select that save and rewind 1 checkpoint before continuing your progress.
  • edited October 2012
It worked ! I downloaded last version, and happily my save was still there. I was able to keep playing from where I left the game, just had to rewind one checkpoint.
Thank you, you made my day !
