Can't progress as character will not take the cane

In episode one, when the walkers are trying to get into the pharmacy, the girl gets the cane to put between the door handles, but when I click on the circle to grab the cane, nothing happens at all. I even quit the game (a full quit) and re-opened it but the same thing happened.
How can I make my character grab that cane!!???
