"Storage device lost"

For some reason, everytime I play Episode 5, and when it is on loading, this pops on:

"The storage device was removed while saving or loading. The game will now exit to the title screen."

Then, when I restart to where I was, it never loads, it stays in a black screen and never loads.

Does Telltale or someone knows the solution for this?

    Anyone?
  • edited December 2012
They know about the issue, they just don't seem to be willing to comment on it.

Another thread mentions that they have issued a patch to Microsoft, so hopefully it'll fix this problem along with all the others.

Can you provide me with more information on your console? How old is the xbox and the hard drive you are using? Do you have a memory unit or flash drive connected as well? If so, which are you using to store your saves? Are any other devices plugged into the USB ports?
  • edited December 2012
I can provide you with all the information I am able. Please forgive me for being remiss in doing so before.

I have an Xbox 360 Elite bought in early 2008, according to Wikipedia that would make it an Opus motherboard. I am using the 120gb hard-drive that came with the console.

I have run the game with a USB stick configured for 360 storage connected to the console (my friends bring their profiles to my house in this manner) and tried running it without any storage but the hard drive connected. The error occurs at the same points no matter if a USB is connected or not.

My save is stored on the 120gb hard drive. In an attempt to problem solve I have moved my profile, the game and the save to a USB stick, removed the hard drive and attempted to play the game from there. The error occurs at the same point.

The only other device that remains connected to the console is the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive. I have however disconnected that from the console and tried to play the game but issue persists anyway.

Note that another profile on my console has been able to play the game through to completion without this "Storage Device Lost" error.

So any more movement on this? I know the 360 might not be the platform you prefer but we still have paid money for the game, only to be blocked from playing by errors.

I have the same setup as the guy previously mentioned. Only difference I have is I also have a kinect plugged in as well. I have tried clearing my cache on both the hard drive and the mu. I have just deleted the episode from my hd and have reinstalled it. I have even tried starting a new file and skipping to episode 5 with random choices made and the only thing that did for me was have the error appear even earlier than before. I have tried the rewind function and it either loads and then causes the error at the same point as before or loads to a black screen. Any suggestions?

Same thing happened on my slim console. Congrats on the game of the year i agree with that but studio??? nah you guys suck at supporting your fans. I only beat the game because i have a second xbox to download it to. I feel bad for the people still waiting to see how their story would turn out.

I hope we can get some feedback this week that Telltale are at least working on getting this error fixed.

With the disc release imminent, hopefully they can now put their attention back to fixing the game for the users who downloaded it.

Just got an update from Xbox LIVE but it hasn't made the slightest bit of difference to this issue.

Still pops up with the Storage Device Lost error at the same place.
  • edited December 2012
Still no news on a fix for this error then?

I apologize for the delayed response. We are still looking into this issue, but have been unable to replicate it. If you navigate to your settings tab on the dashboard and continue to storage devices, how much free space is listed for your HDD?
  • edited December 2012
I apologise if I am coming across as short in my language but after struggling through lost saves and randomised choices, to be blocked from playing completely is frustration of the highest level.

Currently there is 30.5gb of free space on my hard drive.

As noted before another profile on my console is able to play without this error appearing.

    Thank you for the response.

Edit: I deleted as much as I could from my hard drive and got it to 66.1gb of free space. The error still occurs.

It is a shame but the game has essentially become unplayable for me.

Seems I have only two choices. Start a new gamertag and hope the error does not also occur there or give up playing the game entirely.

This "Storage Device Lost" error coming on the back of the previously mentioned ones is pushing me in the direction of the latter choice.

I don't expect this will be fixed before the new year, not with the holidays about to start. Hopefully though something will happen after that.
  • edited December 2012
Well I decided to delete my save and try playing the game again. Hopefully I'll be able to get all the way through without an error popping up again.

Got another title update for the game, so hopefully that will fix the issue.

Ok now I'm having this same problem too. And it's weird because I was able to finish this game 3 times without any problems, but when I tried to replay episodes 1 & 2 I got this error every time the game tried to save progress. I played episode 3 after that and I was able to finish the whole thing without any error. Then I tried episode 1 again and got this error. After that I deleted all my saves, signed in to live, got the latest patch and started episode 3 with random decisions and it worked just fine again. I deleted that save and started from beginning, I completed ep.1 without any issues and just when the Andy fight was about to start in episode 2 I got this error again.

I have a 2-3 year old xbox360 with 120gb harddrive on it. The game is downloaded to that harddrive and i don't have anything else plugged in to my xbox. And there is 62,5 gb of free space left.

I hope this message wasn't too boring to read, I just tried to be as informative as I can be :D

This is a great game but they seem incapable of fixing the errors it has, save reset and choice randomisation, and new ones keep popping up with the Storage Device Lost error and stuttering in the disc based version.

As I said before I don't expect this will be fixed before the New Year but I hope it is soon after or Telltale could see this going from Game of the Year to Disappointment of the Year very quickly indeed.

Another bit of problem solving feedback. I replayed the game over the Christmas holiday on the gamertag that bought the episodes.

I was able to play through and not once did I encounter the Storage Device Lost error.

However on loading the game on other gamertags on the console, the error returned while playing.

It seems that the error occurs, on my console at least, only if playing with a gamertag other than the one which purchased it.

I'm playing with the gamertag which purchased the game and I get this error all the time. Except when I play episode 3.
  • edited December 2012
Well that's blown that idea then.

I hope Telltale can get this sorted as I'd like to be able to play the game on my gamertag.

I think it would help our situation if everyone who has this problem would speak up instead of just lurking this thread and hoping this gets solved.

Yes, I know you're out there! Speak up! :D

Well we are now in a New Year and so I hope that Telltale can get working on this issue.

I bought episodes 1-4 on a different account that I bought episode 5 on. I get to chapter 4 and then it gives storage device lost, Telltale fix this. I would really like to get what I payed for and by the looks of it your taking ya'll sweet time resolving this issue. All in all it has been a great game so far I personally love it and would love it even more if I got to play it. P.S Happy New Year

I wouldn't mind so much if Telltale were open about what is going on. Instead they have retreated to the shadows in the hope this will all go away

Hello we have 2013, i've got the game on winter sale on xbox live. First two episedes runned well, but third and fourth show this strange error of device has ben removed as described over here. I have xbox slim arcade (4gb) version any news on this?!?! 600 MS points is not a lot but i feel a bit bad to be robbed...

What's annoying me is how quickly they have responded to the problems with the disc based version of the game. They're offering a free download version to those who bought it.

Now of course I don't begrudge them getting this and being able to play the game but what about the digital customers?

All we've gotten are two updates that have fixed nothing.

I'm unable to play the game because of the "Storage Device Lost" error, just like the disc based people couldn't because of the stuttering. How about Telltale give a few words of comfort at the very least.
  • edited January 2013
I don't hold out much hope but maybe the new patch will fix this.

They're more worried about making Walking Dead Season 2 then fixing these problems.

I am also having this problem. I get to The Gauntlet in Episode 5 and then this error pops up. It's strange, because I've been able to complete the game twice previously and had nothing of the sort happen.

You're right. I started having this problem once I started a new game on slot 3. I guess three is the magic number because it never happened before that. I really hope Telltale fixes this.

Anyone tried playing recently to see if they've fixed this?

I know I should try but I can bring myself to start playing only to be kicked out of the game again.

    Still no fix for this?

Come on Telltale I know you are working on Season 2 but at least pretend to care about those of us who are unable to play season 1.
  • edited March 2013
I still haven't been able to finish Episode 1 since I get the "Storage device lost..." message every time at one point.
  • edited March 2013
Is Telltale trying to fix this? Why am I not getting a response of any kind? Any Info would be a great help.
  • edited March 2013
If no one from Telltale is gonna respond to the forum or Emails. I guess there is no other choice but to seek Better Buisness and Microsoft. I did not want to do this but what other options do I have. I bought a game from this company that is faulty and they won't even acknowledge a PAYING Customer. So before I go through with this. Will anyone from Telltale reply with answers or info? Telltale thanks for the email.

Yep, i ccompleted this game twice and the third time on ep 1 when i get the scredriver it says "storage device lost" its funny because today was the day for the patch

The first time I deleted EVERYTHING TWD from my hard drive. The episodes, saves, and update. Then reinstalled. I still got the error, but I did it again and it worked. I just completed Episode 1 and did not get the storage error. It works but if you are like me I lost two completed game saves which sucks but at least you can play.

I did the same thing loooong time ago and I was also able to to complete episode 1 but then I got the error again in episode 2.

Sorry to say but I think that this issue has been ignored now by Telltale.

It is sad that they'll gladly take awards but ignore the customers who can't play the game through no fault of their own.

    Hi all,

I've started getting this as well, and have just sent the following email off to Telltale Games Support. Spoilers below:

    Greetings Telltale Games Support,

I hope you're doing well! I'm currently replaying through The Walking Dead on my Xbox 360 (my third playthrough) and I regret that I've begun experiencing the "Storage Device Lost" error (picture of the error message attached). I purchased the game via Xbox LIVE during the 2012 Boxing Week sale, and completed my first playthrough this past January and my second playthrough this past March without issue.

My Xbox 360 Pro console is a refurbished console sent to me under warranty by Xbox Support in June 2010. Attached is my 120 GB HDD (purchased new in November 2008) and I have 43 GB of space free. No USB flashdrive is presently connected and Cloud Storage is enabled. I am connected to Xbox LIVE as I play, and I am connected wirelessly using the original Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter. Note that I live in Canada and to the best of my knowledge I have the most recent Title Update.

As this is my third playthrough, all three save slots are now occupied, and this save game is in the third slot. Note that I am also saving to my HDD.

The error first occurred last night around 11:20 pm towards the end of Episode 4. Right when you are choosing who will come with you to search for Clementine, I told Ben to remain behind, paused the game, and selected Exit. The error message occurred. I then rebooted the game and tried to load my save a few times, and each time it would either load to a black screen (the Xbox Guide would still work) or freeze the console completely at the Loading screen, forcing a complete reboot.

After a power-cycle on my console I rewound Episode 4 by two checkpoints and was able to complete the Episode without issue. I then backed my save file up to Cloud Storage.

This morning, around 12:20 pm, I was playing Episode 5, and when Lee grabs the knife from the kitchen cupboard and begins running to the front door of the mansion, the error message occurred again and dropped me back to the title screen. I then rewound to the previous checkpoint, and the error message occurred again, however this time it did so when transitioning from the yard into the mansion as the dead approached.

I took a break and began again around 3:45 pm, this time playing from my Cloud Storage, which started me off at the beginning of Episode 5. Note the error message occurred as Lee was running for the front door of the mansion during "The Siege."

After the error occurred this morning in Episode 5, I powered down my console, detached and reattached my HDD to make sure it was on properly, otherwise it has not been moved. My internet connection has also not cut out, and Cloud Storage appears to be working properly.

Can you please advise me on additional troubleshooting steps or a fix for this issue?
  • edited April 2013
I tried an additional troubleshooting step (which didn't work) and have emailed Telltale Games Product Support the below:

    Hello Telltale Games Product Support,

I'd just like to update Ticket ID #xxxx with another troubleshooting step I've tried. I had a backup of my save game file on a USB Flashdrive from a few days earlier, and yesterday evening I copied that to my HDD. This back up was done prior to me ever receiving any error messages with the game.

This placed me back halfway through Episode 3 (when you arrive at the train), and I began playing through from there.

Yesterday evening I completed Episode 3 and replayed all of Episode 4 without incident. Around 1:45 pm today, I began Episode 5 and made it past the point where it first gave me the error message before, but sadly, as soon as I got to the attic in the mansion the same issue occurred.

Once dropped back to the main menu, I tried rewinding to the "Trapped" Checkpoint in Episode 5, but the error occurred upon loading.

I then tried rewinding to "The Siege," and the error message once again occurred as Lee runs to the front door to cut off the zombies hands, which is where it was originally occurring for me in Act 5.

At this point I'm personally out of troubleshooting options, and any guidance would be appreciated.

    Thank you!
