Thanks for the update Jackal. Seems odd this is their answer as i have tested this disc on a standard slim ps3, older fat ps3 and issues persisted on both at the same spots when playing on the retail disc (disc is spotless). Go figure. I pushed through and finished the game and experienced much less of these issues in episode 4 and 5 but still a little bit of it. Great game and definitely deserved of Game of the Year, but this disc release is a very unfortunate representation of this fantastic product. Since this seems to be their response i will cease further posting about this issue and just take appropriate precautions when further purchases from telltale are made.
Again, amazing game and excellent art. Please keep making these games Telltale, but please invest more in testing on future disc releases.
They should call this game "The Walking Lag". Seriously, how can a game that is pretty much just made of dialogue choices lag so bad? I just purchased the PS3 disk yesterday, and played through Ep. 1. The game worked great up until the last moments of the pharmacy. Then as everyone else has stated, voices stopped being in synch, and the stuttering is so jarring, that it completely takes you out of the game. I missed a couple of key choices simply because the game kept stuttering and at one point just froze for about 3 seconds. Ive played a lot of the TellTale games, even "Bone" which left ya hanging after one episode, and have never had these problems. My PS3 is fine. I take very good care of it. I never have these type of situations with any other disk. Was this game even tested for issues before they sent it to be pressed for retail purchase? Please Telltale, could you do something for us fans of your games to help us out, and not just switch the blame to our consoles. Obviously we are all having the same problems at the same spots, and I dont think its a coincidence.
Lol, acording to that answer my ps3 is the problem? Give me a break i know my ps3 and it works just fine... this is them washing their hands on the subject. Im going to send mails to ign and gamespot to see if they can publish this crap for everyone to know.
I purchased the PS3 disc version for my girlfriend's Christmas present, not realizing there were going to be performance issues when compared to the downloadable version. She finally has some time to play it and is loving the game, but she is really aggravated at the constant choppiness (as in every 30 seconds during game-play).
Telltale, please provide us with downloadable copy keys upon proof of purchase of the retail disk edition, this is beyond frustrating!
I bought this game a couple weeks ago and experienced the same lagging issues at the end of the first episode, and in subsequent episodes as well. While it's a terrific game, I feel that the issues plaguing it are awful and should be fixed. If that's not possible, I feel that PS3 users experiencing this should be awarded a code to download the game in full from the PSN store.
I want to play through the game again, but I don't want to sit through all of the hiccups . Playing through it the first time was almost unbearable. Please fix this issue.
It seems to them we are second class citizens given that no one seems to be answering i wrote to ign about you ppl should too better than doing nothing in this forum
Seriously? Not even some kind of reply from any devs or tech support on this issue? The bad game performance is obviously happening to a large amount of people. There are many forum topics on many different sites that are asking about this. Why are us PS3 users getting the shaft here? If Xbox360 users can get help, then why cant we?
We are aware that a small number of users are affected by hitching on the PS3 and have been looking into the issue. We do know that the issue affecting 4GB Xbox users of the game not being able to cache properly would not affect PS3 users as all units come with a physical hard drive.
However, we do know that if the game audio is not synced during gameplay this can be an indicator of a fragmented hard drive. Following the steps posted by BigAl6ft6 on page 2 to restore the PS3 Database and File System should resolve this issue and may resolve any major hitching you encounter. Please select the direct link below to view this helpful post:
I am having an issue as well, for one I cannot even get this game to update on the PS3. I do have a launch console, but have upgraded the hard drive to a 250gb hard drive. I have about 160 GB free. This game cannot be played because it always refuses to update. I am forced to unplug from the PSN to even get the game to play, and then it is partially playable. If you all can fix the game, then please do so, otherwise I do not even want the game anymore in its current state and will kindly send it back directly to the company.
I did what the poster suggested in the link, Matt. There is still significant lag throughout episodes 1-2 so far. This is not just an isolated incident. I've seen people on various forums complaining about frame rate issues.
No disrespect intended, Matt, but I feel that blaming it on the PS3 hard drive is a cop out. Skyrim is the only other PS3 game I've had any slow down with, but the frame rate is far worse in this game.
The game itself definitely deserves Game of the Year, but the hitching is unbearable. If nothing is done about this I'll be very hesitant to purchase another Telltale game in the future.
Hi Matt, i followed the previously (and reposted) steps from the link and the same issue occurs. Again, terrible in the end of episode one (lag, audio sync, scene jumps due to "lag"), beginning of episode 2, and end of episode 2, and at one point when you are stopped at the station in ep. 3 (although that may just be the large environment at that scene). Again episode 4, 5, and most of 3 didnt have much of any issues but 1 and 2 still acting up horribly ( in the same exact spots). I tried these test play throughs with different choices and same spots were affected. This was tested on my ps3 slim (not the new 2011 one), and on an original ps3 fat. Same spots, same troubleshooting, same issues. Both devices have unaltered factory HDD's. i'm posting this at this point to help further illustrate that this does not seem to be a ps3 (user end) specific issue. If there is an update to fix this in the future cool. Will we get replacement codes for ps3, probly not (and at this point ive accepted that with no animosity). BUT, and i cant stress this enough, please make note that there IS a legitimate issue here for ps3 owners who bought the disc release and let TTG know that these issues need to be addressed for both sides of the coin (either console) for future disc releases as a show of good faith to TTG's customers and fans. Again, love the game, hope for more, all respect to you and TTG, but please provide this data to whoever needs to see it to help prevent further issues like this. Thank you very much.
Again, not asking for anything more here from TTG other than followup on future disc release (or digital) issues for both user bases. You still have a loyal fan here, but i gotta state my case on behalf of users with issues. Again, thanks for all you all do.
Thank you for the feedback. I am sorry that the workaround posted on the previous page did not resolve this issue. We would like to look into the matter more closely, so if possible, can anyone affected by hitching or lag on the PS3 retail version of The Walking Dead provide the following:
• A video showing the hitching and out of sync audio (please upload videos to a file sharing website like youtube and provide the direct link to the video)
• More information about your PS3 such as:
How old is your PS3?
What is your PS3's model number? This can be found at the end of the serial number or the bottom fo the console and starts with a 'CECH' designation.
Have you replaced your hard drive? If so, please provide make and model number of the new hard drive.
Have you ever cleaned or replaced your Blu-Ray drive? If so, please provide any relevant details.
Any other information you can provide would also be helpful in trying to isolate the cause of this issue.
Hi, I just made an account to add my info to the discussion.
I was experiencing terrible stuttering with the disc based TWD game. It was really bad towards the end of chapter one, and was rendering the game unenjoyable, if not unplayable.
It looks like I may have fixed this issue by removing the dynamic theme I had installed on my ps3. After I changed it back to a default theme, The end of ep 1 ran much smoother and I encountered no significant problems in ep 2 (there was some stuttering during the 1st minute, but after that, there were only very minor hiccups for the rest of the ep.)
PS3 Info:
60GB launch model w/ 260GB hd installed
Dynamic theme (Journey) was installed, issue cleared up for me when dynamic theme was removed.
I am also experiencing severe framerate drops and audio/video desynchronization with my disc copy of TWD on PS3. I have a freshly fragmented, serviced, wiped cache, restored, etc. file system, and a recently cleaned Blu-Ray drive that plays other games and movies without incident.
It is an older 80GB PS3 that came with MGS4 on the game's launch (CECHExx.)
I am not running a dynamic theme, and have recently cleared up space on the HDD (pre-defrag) so that I believe there is close to 30GB of free space on the console.
I have tried everything I can think of to get the game to work, which is quite a bit, considering I work in QA. Please let me know what steps I can take for my wife and I to play the game again.
I had The Walking Dead since Christmas and have been eyeing this topic since then in desperation. Got really frustrated a few weeks back and gave up but today I followed McD's advice and disabled my dynamic theme (Flower) and the game's lag and stuttering issues dropped dramatically.
I have missed some dialog ques early in Episode 2 due to the game stuttering every time something loads or autosaves but I highly suggest anyone having problems to try this out. I'm at the finale of Episode 2 now and I am having one heck of an experience.
here's a complete constructive feedback, I'm sorry i can't provide any video.

sytem version 4.31
- my ps3 is one year old
- cech 3004B
- never replace anything.. hard drive, blue-ray drive...
- never install PS3 themes, but downloaded some
- played something like 70 games, also dvds films, blue-rays films.. never observed this kind of lag
- european ps3, i'm based in France
- I played psn version of episode 1: no problem
- I bought the disc version, keep the save file from the psn episode 1, delete the episode 1 psn game
- then i played episode 2 disc version. lots of lags, sounds & videos.. particularly at the beginning and the end.
not very playable.
I personnaly thing there's a reason to that lag. It's impossible my ps3 only had the problem with that game disc.
I almost never uninstall anything. Disc fragmentation can't be the problem, in my opinion.
The fact everything else I do, every other game I play works just fine seems to prove it.
Removing my dynamic theme seems to have helped a lot, but not completely cleared the issue.
I did see some stuttering flair up pretty bad towards the end of ep 3, when in the area encountering the hanging tanker by the train tracks. The stuttering cleared up when I went to the next area to check the station, and returned when I got back to the tracks.
It went away again when the story left that area, so in this case, I'm betting that bit might not run so smooth for anybody.
Hi, I signed up specifically to get in this thing.
I just received this game as a gift, and if I had the receipt and could return it, I would. I get all of the mad-laging issues everyone has posted on here.
My ps3 is a little over a year old, is a 320gb system wth, literally, around 290gb's of free space. I have never downloaded a theme, never downloaded any games from the ps store, never replaced anything in the console, and have never once had a lag or loading issue with any other game, movie, netflix (the only thing I have downloaded and installed) or anything else. Just like everyone else, I was super pumped to play this game, and it's an absolute travesty that a) it's playability is utterly terrible; b) the same problems for the multiple users are getting blamed on consoles, not the game itself; and c) nothing is being done about it. C'mon. I wanna love this ame. Just give me a chance, man!
First post. Got the game as a birthday gift. PS3Slim, 160G Version.
Here is a video I captured on my phone of the game play. Let me know if this is suppose to be normal? I've already had a few times where the game would lag/jitter, then when I get control again the timing bar either expired or was half way gone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-xUl7OlBro
Episode 1, at pharmacy scrambling to get away.
Note...go to about 0:50secs of the video, and watch Lee's interaction with Doug and Carley. Notice the lag after I first try to close the door shut. I input, no animation, then sound happens, then animation occurs. Same with the conversation with Doug and Carley afterwards where Carley shoots her gun.
Apologize for the quality, apparently I had autofocus on, so it keeps focusing in and out a bit.
I have never played any other version of this game (PC/360/PSN) so this only version I know of. If this is suppose to be the general experience...it is unfortunately not a very good one. Whatever immersion or suspense I am suppose to have for this game gets immediately remove when the game lags like this...and this occurs through out episode 1.
This is almost exactly where the lag first started for me as well. By the time the episode was wrapping up at the motel, I would hear questions being asked of Lee and had to guess at responses before the camera even cut to that question's camera angle and presented the HUD for answering. After extensive system maintenance, it did not perform significantly better, and Ep. 2 is still nigh unplayable.
Has anyone here had these issues with the digital copy? Additionally, does anyone here have both the digital and physical copy? I personally am wondering if the disc copy is the same title ID. If it is, it probably means there is very little (if any) additional code to handle the different ways they'd cache data.
Last I checked, I didn't think that MS or Sony would allow a title to submit under two different forms of media without resubmitting for TCR/TRC testing (hell, there's stuff they check on a physical game they never think about looking at for digital, and vice versa,) but who knows.
I just hope this gets straightened out soon. I look forward to playing, and honestly don't really consider what I paid $30 for to be a working product. Extremely disappointed.

It appears some users have had success Restoring the File System as well as the Database, and removing their dynamic themes. There is also a possibility that the disc could be a bad burn, but only exchanging it for another copy could confirm this.
Has anyone had the chance to exchange their disc for another copy and if so, does that disc lag as well? Also, has anyone had the chance to play the disc on another PS3 to see if the lag is limited to their system?
Signed just to join the group of people with stuttering/lag problem.
My PS3 is a 6 month old slim model with 160 GB. I bought the game yesterday and everything was ok until the ending part of the chapter 1, when the stuttering, audio-desync and lag began.
Since the game is based on the time of response to the actions, it's impossible to play this way.
I just wish that a patch dont take too long to be released, so i can back to play the game again.
At least patch it so that users can install the entire game to the HDD or get a digital copy since the disc version seems so flawed for some odd reason. Maybe that would improve the performance? Never know...
Lurked for a bit but also registered because of this problem so that the team can hopefully figure that this is likely a widespread problem. I love this game and it would be perfect if this issue weren't bogging down my experience of it.
Does anyone have a workaround for this yet? Is a patch being worked on?
ok, as you asked Matt, I tried my disc on a friend ps3.
The problem persists. So if the problem is the disk and not my ps3, well...
it seems lots of your disks are broken. Anybody else can confirm and test his disk on another system?
I also has the same stuttering on my disc even after restoring the system and changing the dynamic theme. I appreciate all your helps and suggestion, but I think the main problem here, as for as I know, is that the disc version is definitely very laggy in any case, especially when comparing with the download version. After checking numerous forums and sites, I concluded that everyone who got the disc shares the same problem! (anyone who found the disc ver. playing smoothly please correct me).
So, it is very understandable, that we what a function to install the game into harddisk, at least to make the game as playable as a download ver. (which is even cheaper). I really like your games, but if these kind of problems still persist, I guess I have to sell the disc and never turn back.
So I did have a dynamic theme enabled and tried to play it again with the dynamic theme turned off and all theme options set to the default settings. The same issues were still very present at the end of act 1 in the pharmacy and beginning of act two. The previous posters video (the one with the auto focus thing) is a perfect reprensentation of what is happening. This is my 3rd playthrough (yes, i like the game that much) and every time the same damn thing occurs. It does happen on another ps3 (new slim 500gb version) that i tested on as well as mine. Since there are so many other users with the same problem and its been so long, i have not gone back to try and exchange the disc at my retailer (i also dont have the receipt any longer). My ps3 details are as follows:
Slim PS3 / model CECH-2001B / 250gb hdd (unchanged and not replaced) / system software version 4.31 (as of 2-28-2013) / purchased on 1-7-2010 from a Target store.
No other game or disc has ever had issues running with my dynamic theme installed and no bluray discs have had problems with playback. This one however is still having major difficulties at the spots reported (reported by multiple people).
I thank you for your continued followup on this, but shouldnt a game run ok regardless of the os theme or a drive being defragmented? I am trying the steps listed and removing my themes i payed to use but still experiencing issue. Again i dont wish to sound rude at all but it seems this has been reported enough to warrant some more thorough investigation from the team. Well let us know, and if i decide to attempt a playthrough again ill see if i cant get some form of video.
I have the same problem and seeing how old it seems to be (reading the many online threads regarding the issue) I cannot believe that it still has not been fixed! Seems like TT games was just hoping for the buzz to die down and it would seem they've succeeded, since the last post here was a while ago... Will try my disc on other systems
soon, but from the many posts I've seen online, I'm pretty sure of the result... it's just incredibly disappointing. was really looking forward to playing this game!
Well, i think that we can forget about Telltale saying something about this issue, almost 5 months after the last message by Telltale and the game still doesn't work.
how this game win game of the year if they dont fix or make a statement if they will still fix it or not. lack of support for this company, they selling us broken game. its been months and still no patch for the log/stattering issues of the retail version of walking dead for ps3. now they release a new dlc for the game, but they have no answers about the problem..
Just saw a link about the Game Of the Year edition, which is already on a pre-sale on Amazon.
Is this some kind of Joke? How Telltale can launch a Disc Version of Walking Dead for PS3 if this thing don't work? It's been more than six months that i bought this game and i can't play, it just doesn't work and telltale doesn't talk about it. It will be some update for those who where fool enough to buy the normal disc version?
I think I've found the problem. I've noticed that every time it auto-saves the game starts to stutter and hitch a lot more. Also, If you rewind to different chapters then it does it even worse. I have also witnessed the game messing up at the end of Episode 1 and the beginning of Episode 2. Sometimes when the screen that says "Loading..." comes up the character's start talking before they ever show up and the voice isn't matching when they talk after they show up. Sometimes when it gets to an action scene where you have to kill walkers it freezes for a while. I think most of the problem with stuttering and hitching everyone is having trouble with as myself is because of the auto-saving that
happens constantly. I hope TTG can fix these problems as soon as possible. I would appreciate it.
So what's with the Lagging, stuttering, etc... This game is horrible... I completely reformatted my sons PS3 slim thinking this would help, but it is no better... Having subsequently read the comments in this forum and elsewhere online I am shocked that telltale games is still selling this title... I am frankly surprised that they haven't been subjected to a class action suit... For a game that doesn't appear to be that intense graphically, the performance is absolutely appalling. Moreover, it sad that so many people have gone to the extent that I have, trying to fix an unfixable problem.

So, it is very understandable, that we what a function to install the game into harddisk, at least to make the game as playable as a download ver. (which is even cheaper). I really like your games, but if these kind of problems still persist, I guess I have to sell the disc and never turn back.
Cheers,
Slim PS3 / model CECH-2001B / 250gb hdd (unchanged and not replaced) / system software version 4.31 (as of 2-28-2013) / purchased on 1-7-2010 from a Target store.
Well let us know, and if i decide to attempt a playthrough again ill see if i cant get some form of video.
soon, but from the many posts I've seen online, I'm pretty sure of the result... it's just incredibly disappointing. was really looking forward to playing this game!
