Why, Telltale?

edited October 2013 in The Wolf Among Us

Why you don't release your games with translated subtitles? And I mean, DECENT ones, not like The Walking Dead (I'm talking aboud the spanish one, the only one I can see), these were totally horrible. I mean, I don't know who you hired to get those subtitles to spanish but please take care of him.

Why I say that? I can play the game in english, yes, but I hate to see that your games don't get enough international recognition by the people who don't know enough english to play it, because they are amazing. I see in spanish magazine reviews (I don't know about the other languages) that your game get criticism because of that, and I see many people complain in the forums about that, saying that they won't buy the game if it doesn't have translated subtitles.

So, I did this thread (again, I did this with The Walking Dead too more than a year ago) because I'm starting to see the same problem like in that.

Thanks for read, I hope you take care of this and start to release all your games in many languages (I mean subtitles, not the voices, obviously).

  • There's that then there's the fact they totally ignore other keyboard layout AND does not allow the rebinding of the controls...

You can partially blame the existence of consoles for that.

  • Not being to rebind keyboard controls is lame. I wouldn't have bothered buying the game if I have known.

    Yeah, it's really a shame.
I was hoping, since "400 days" was translated the day it came out, that something changed.
    But no.
It was from Sam & Max season 2 that I continuosly make request for translation. Every game Telltale put out had me in the forum asking if the game would have translations.

I like the games, but I can (hardly) play them, with my tablet near me as a dictionary: but when it come to complex phrases I'm still having hard times. I understood only 50% of what Colin says, because it's hard to understand sarcasm in foreign languages.

Here in Italy everyone is saying "I would buy it, but i won't because I cannot master english": and it's a true need, expecially in a detective story where there are subtle hints in dialogues.

And so tomorrow I'll have a birthday, and I'll gift my friend "Beyond: two souls" in italian instead of "The wolf among us". As you see there's something more valuable than price (Beyond costs 3 times TWAU).
    Missed opportunity, Telltale.

  • No you don't.

Lacking the option to redefine the keybind is a serious issue.
    I find it extremely annoying.

  • Well, for one, you have to use the keyboard for QTEs. And there's plenty of people who don't use WASD config, either out of personal preference or because of a disability of some kind.

Personally, being left-handed and using the mouse in my dominant hand, I find WASD uncomfortable and unintuitive. (It's probably why I have so much trouble with QTEs in Telltale's games, come to think of it, since I have to stop and think about what key I'm pressing rather than just doing it on instinct.) Telltale's are pretty much the only games I use the WASD config in.

It's not a deal breaker for me, but it can be irritating.

  • Well, as for the language issue, I comfortable enough in english for that to not be a dealbreaker (as opposed to the non rebinding issue, although I played TWD with a gamepad, it's on principle), they could at least provide subtitles in several languages.

That apparent lazyness doesn't push me to buy their games, too bad TWD was the first of their games I liked and this one seemed interesting. As it is now, I'll just wait for it to go at 5€ on Steam, not putting more in it, if at all...

  • I can confirm that also in Italy there's a strong disappointment about the games not being released with at least subtitles, and I can also confirm that when they do (The Walking Dead, extremely late) the subtitles are awful - full of errors or even dialectal translations that are worse than amateur. Funny since there's a strong community which would be glad to translate TTG's games for free if they're asked to, and they sure would do better than who took care of TWD's translations.

However, we have almost given up on this. Those who are able to play confidently in English will buy TTG's games, the other ones won't. I guess TTG does not need our market, they're doing fine with US/UK and all English speakers around the world.
But I have to say that TTG does not look so nice to the majority of Italian people since at least the release of ToMI.

  • That a shame!!! I just finished the walking dead and just dl'd wolf because I'm on a binge now!!!

I feel for ya'll that can't truly experience the games because they are so well made!!!! I get mad when someone interrupts me while I'm deciding a major choice can't imagine how much of a pain it be to not be able to translate the game! Hopefully they hear everyone and don't think your crying wolf! Bad punn I know but I said it so there! Lol if I can watch bleach translated for free accurately enough surely paying gamers should rb able to get that experience......

  • Yeah.
A lot of ALT+F4 everytime I discover that I misunderstood a choice, before it saves.
    Very annoying.

    Yes.
And it's even before Tomi, from Sam&Max season 2 (almost 2 years to get a translation on CD, and it was never imported here in italy. I had to buy the game in France).
The only game they did well was Wallace&Gromit. Already multilanguage when the episodes were released.

Even the small Phoenix studios games did better, in Italy they had an agreement with Zodiac Store and they released translations of each episode after just a month from each releases.

  • Same happend to the german translation (TWD) terrible. Playing now everything in english.

  • True.

only solution i have been able to find is to reconfig my system keyboard.

sad. but i find it annoying enough that I won't be buying any of the future episodes.

  • I've often been wondering why Telltale didn't translate their games to other languages.I come from France and here there are a lot of people who heard of their games and think they're interesting but they won't play it because they don't speak english. But apart from the subtitles, why not translate the voices? I know that Telltale is a small game company but I'm sure that they could do it if they really wanted to.It would be great for them because they would make even more money because more people would get to play their games.Maybe right now they can't or don't want to,but I'm hoping that with the success of TWD,TWAU,Game of Thrones and all their future games they will eventually grow bigger and decide to translate all their games.

Which lead us all down to this question, can the staff of TTG be counted with the fingers of a single hand ?

I mean, no offense but compared to the quality of their storytelling ability, to not have decent/any translations, nor key remapping, is kinda awkward.
It feels like they are on tight budget, not being able adress those simple yet useful additions.

  • Well, as for the lack of rebinding, their staff answered me here some time ago that it was not necessary and that I could essentially f off (with all the nice little formulas around so they don't look like pricks to the common mortals/fans). So yeah, here it is... this thread full of people agreeing on something and TT not caring at all about them, they prefer to cash grab on game of thrones and borderlands version of their adventure games that are starting to look like each other...

Good for us I suppose, leave more money and/or time for other devs...
