Get help here: Savegame import issues

DjNDBDjNDB Moderator

If you have issues with importing your savegames from season 1 into season 2, first make sure you know how the savegame import is supposed to work. It is explained in this FAQ. You need to start a new game in season 2 and then it should ask you to import your saves.

If it doesn't work as described, please post a description of the problem in this thread and provide the following information:

Did you play season 1 in any compatibility mode?
Did you use any workaround on your savegames in the past?
Do you still see the correct stats for all episodes in season 1?

Further please follow the instructions to run the TWD Support Tool and post the download link to the resulting "TWD_support_data_pc.zip" or "TWD_support_data_mac.zip" to your next reply in this thread.

Did you play the season 1 in win95 or win98/me compatibility mode?

If so, please rename the original savegame folder
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\
    to anything else.

Then copy the "The Walking Dead" folder from
    %PUBLIC%\Documents\Telltale Games\
    to
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\

The prefs.prop in your savegame folder is too small to be valid. It's weird, because it predates the actual .save files, so I don't know what happened there.
unless you have another backup, all you can do is trying the "restore previous version" feature (right click, "properties", "restore previous version") on the prefs.prop in the savegame folder ( %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead ). If there are multiple versions try each of them starting with the latest.

There are indeed no savegames. If you played in compatibility mode, please look above.

  • I tried restoring, but alas it did not work. However, does this mean I just need to play through the season 1 and everything will be fine? I am willing to do so or is there something wrong with the prefs.prop file itself?

I suggest you disable steam cloud for TWD (In Steam, right click TWD and select "properties". Open the tab "updates" and remove the checkbox from "Enable Steam cloud synchronization for TWD).
Then delete the savegame folder before starting over.

After finishing each episode please make a backup copy of the savegame folder to be safe.

Your savegames look weird, as if you copied some stuff around randomly. Also I don't see a complete playthrough.

Do they load properly if you start season 1 and how far have you played?

  • Yea I had an issue with the fourth episode of season 1, where my saves didn't show up. I tried loads of different methods posted online and finally found one that worked

I've played the whole thing including 400 days, just loaded that up now, it loaded me at the end of 400 days at the camp

The prefs.prop in the savegame folder looks like it was corrupted and replaced. Unless you have any backup of your savegame folder I don't know how to recover your progress.

  • Nope, the public documents folder is empty

I can't remember all the things i tried, the thing that worked was copying the pref.prop file from the steamapps walking dead folder to the walking dead folder in my user folder

What method did you use back then? Some methods (e.g. the "timestamp workaround") would cause inconsistent savegames. Are there any savegame folders in %PUBLIC%\Documents\Telltale Games\ ?

There's only a small chance of getting your savegames back.

Please disable steam cloud for TWD (In Steam, right click TWD and select "properties". Open the tab "updates" and remove the checkbox from "Enable Steam cloud synchronization for TWD").

Then try the "restore previous version" feature (right click, "properties", "restore previous version") on the savegame folder ( %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead ). If there are multiple versions try each of them starting with the latest.

Looks normal at first sight. What problem do you get while importing the savegames?

If you .zip and upload your prefs.prop and all *.save files i can take a look at them.
Please upload it as a single .zip file to an instant filehoster and post the download link.

    here is mine: https://www.dropbox.com/s/q39o1sm77fgqr06/TWD_support_data_pc.zip

  • Unfortunately there aren't any previous versions to restore to.
No matter, I think i'll just delete all the data from my pc of everything from it and start again from the beginning. It's not a problem as I really enjoy the game

    Thanks for the help anyway!

There are not enough .save files in the savegame folder for a complete playthrough, so either they are somewhere else, or soemthing broke.

Do you have another savegame folder in
    %PUBLIC%\Documents\Telltale Games\

  • i found save games in my public folder not my user name and tried copying them over to my name. I ran the first season in compatability through Steam, that was the only workaround. I've got season 2 running in compatability as well, same settings. I DO have them installed on separate drives right now, one is on my D drive and two is on my E drive, however it's looking for the saves in the My Documents folder on C so not sure that's the issue.

The folder marked old are the files that were in the my name documents folder I didn't want to copy over from the public folder.

I am having a problem on my save imports. The import itself works but in the Season 1 recap it says I spared Danny when I killed him. At this point I turned it off so I don't know if any more choices are wrong. I played S1 on steam and am playing S2 from Telltale. I checked the Season 1 choices stats and they are correct on Steam. I don't know why they are importing incorrectly into the second season. http://www.sendspace.com/file/cwbms0

  • This is probably a moot point. In trying to get Season 1 to run through Steam off of compatability mode (it won't but I can start it from the folder and it works fine), the game has over-written the file that detects the saved games that are still there and now it won't see that I had save files for all of Season 1 despite the ton of them in the folder.

I'm hoping there's some way to get the game to see the saves and so that I can import them, but I'm guessing I'm just going to have to go through the whole of Season 1 and 400 Days all over again and hope that it'll import next time. I'd prefer to have my save games from 1 import as I did have two runs, one I considered 'bad' and another that was 'good'.

For some reason the %PUBLIC% and %USERPROFILE% are exactly the same for me, not only the TWD folders, but all my other folders.
As far as the questions you asked, I dont think I played in compatibility mode, however it's been a while so I might be wrong. I didnt use any workarounds. It seems my saves arent working in Season 1 either, but I can see the files in the folder?
