Mine don't work, even though they work just fine in Season 1, and the save file validator can't find them either. They're in C:\Users\ [USERNAME]\Documents\Telltale Games, right next to the Season 2 folder.

Since the validator won't work I uploaded my save folder, so here it is:

Okay, so when I fired up Season 2 it only detected the third save I had for Season 1. That was a playthrough where I was working through episode 1. All of my real progress is in Save 1 which is not being detected.

I stupidly deleted that Save 3 it could detect today in the hopes of fixing Season 2 but it didn't work and I now realize that having that still might have helped diagnose my save problem.

Oh and I don't know if this is related but for some reason when I launched Season 1 it said that Episode 2 wasn't installed. I clicked GET and percentage was there for a few seconds before suddenly saying it was installed.

Anyway, here's the Support Tool Data: http://www.sendspace.com/file/rlxkes

Importing your savegames works fine for me.
There's no such thing as a save file validator. I have to manually analyze the output of the support tool in order to suggest what could help, so please try running it again and upload the resulting .zip.
Should the support tool not have created a .zip file after it showed the "Finished" message, please upload a screenshot of the support tool run and all files it has created up to that point.

There's no complete playthrough in the savegame folder
    C:\Users\tx\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead

Actually the files are so old, that I believe something must be wrong with your season 1 installation. If the registry key is missing, it saves to a folder named GameData, which is happening in your case.

I suggest you remove the contents of this savegame folder:
    C:\Users\tx\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead

Then reinstall season 1 to make sure it's properly installed.

    Then move the content of
    C:\Users\tx\Documents\Telltale Games\GameData
    to
    C:\Users\tx\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead
And start episode 1 to see if the savegame shows up.

Since you said you deleted your savegame though, you can take a look at this folder, which looks like it could be a backup you once made:
    C:\Users\tx\Documents\TTGB\GameData
If that's the case, use the contents of it instead of the other gamedata folder in the process i described earlier.

Your season 1 is running in compatibility mode.

Please disable steam cloud for TWD (In Steam, right click TWD and select "properties". Open the tab "updates" and remove the checkbox from "Enable Steam cloud synchronization for TWD).
please rename the original savegame folder
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\
    to anything else.

Then copy the "The Walking Dead" folder from
    %PUBLIC%\Documents\Telltale Games\
    to
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\

That should be enough for season 2 to find your savegames. I suggest you also disable compatibility mode for season 1 though to avoid future problems.

Please check the properties of the Steam.exe, your Steam icons, and the games .exe files, and disable any compatibility mode settings.
Sometimes compatibility mode is checked, but is grayed out. Then you have to click on "Change settings for all users" at the bottom to disable the checkbox.
Afterwards try if the game works.

If you made absolutely sure, that the method mentioned above didn't work to disable it, you can try disabling it in the registry. Then restart the computer and try running the game again.

  • Hey, when I try to load my save files it says I've only completed up to Episode 2, when I've actually completed up to 400 days. When playing Season 1 it reads all the save files correctly and shows all of my decisions. I seem to remember having issues with Season 1, but I can't remember which specific episode and how I got around it. I think I may have in fact restarted. Thanks for the help. :)

As a side note I believe I've uninstalled TWD1 since completing it (not certain though) and then re-installed it on a different hard drive (B:). I can see the save file and prefs.prop in (C:). I have not run the game in compatibility mode. I have completed TWD1 completely with 400days. I used to have a problem with S1 E2 because it didn't save my choice but I can't remember if I just started over from E1 to fix it.

  • DjNDBDjNDB Moderator

It doesn't look good. The prefs.prop in the savegame folder is too small to be valid for a complete playthrough.

If you have any backup of it, try restoring it.

Otherwise please disable steam cloud for TWD (In Steam, right click TWD and select "properties". Open the tab "updates" and remove the checkbox from "Enable Steam cloud synchronization for TWD").

Then try the "restore previous version" feature (right click, "properties", "restore previous version") on the savegame folder ( %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead ). If there are multiple versions try restoring each of them starting with the latest. If the prefs.prop is much bigger than 10KB chances are best it's the correct set of savefiles.

Unfortunately it doesn't have any previous versions so I'm guessing that I*m going to have to play TWD1 again... Well thanks for your help anyways. Any advice on how to prevent this from happening again?

I'm also guessing there isn't any "official" way I could just create/edit files that have those notable decisions.

Example to make my idea a bit more clear:

    BEGIN SPOILERS
    Doug dies T / [F]
    as in Doug wont die.
    END SPOILERS

I'm guessing you don't know about that unless you're a dev. (I'm assuming it all depends on the prefs.prop file) Could I download someones prefs.prop file with the choices I want?

    Anyways thanks for help again.

Sadly there's no savegame generator and since I'm not TTG staff I don't have access to documentation to create one.

You can download and use other peoples save files. Some users uploaded some recently, I've compiled a list of what i could find.
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/bkais3
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/yk1ftf
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/0f689x

You can check the stats for each episode and hopefully find something you are okay with.

If you decide to play through it again, there is a method that can prevent at least the multiple prefs.prop issues that can happen, but it is not tested yet (since it requires an entire playthrough of course). It should work in theory and If you decide to do so I'll try to make it easy to use.

  • Yeah, I'll probably play it through on the weekend. Thank you, you've done more than enough. I hope you get a medal of some sorts to reward for being patient and helpful with people who are having problems. Pretty much any method to prevent the problems I'm willing to take.

    Thank you again.

Alright, I spent quite some time making it as safe to use as I could. It's tailored to your system, so it's not meant to be used by anybody else without modifications. I tried to make it generic at first, but It's just safer this way. If anyone else using the steam version is interested, let me know and include support tool data for the adaptions.

    Here's how it works.

Download and unzip this file. It contains a batch file. Right click the batch file and select "run as administrator" each time you start the game.
If you run it normally instead, the protection is not there.

To be safe it's best to also make a backup copy of your savegame folder ( %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead ) after each episode you played.

Please keep me updated as to how it works.

    Technical background:
The batch file will create symlinks from the locations where prefs.prop files are sometimes created to the prefs.prop in the savegame folder, to prevent this bug. This way you should not run into the multiple prefs.prop bug during your playthrough, which is the cause of most savegame issues.
It then runs the game and afterwards deletes the symlinks again. It's important not to close the black command window (unless it says so), because then the links are not deleted and future runs will fail. That's a safety measure and requires manual intervention to get out of.
Making the symlinks permanent would have been much easier, but that would break if there are multiple windows user accounts playing the game.

Another possible issue is the prefs.prop being corrupted if the game crashes. It doesn't mitigate that. That's why you should also backup the savegame folder.

  • Unfortunately I don't think there's really a fix. Other people have had the same problem when killing only Danny. I've tested it out and it shows Danny being spared if you leave either of them alive. The only way for the save import to make sense in the flashback is if you kill both of them (shows Danny being killed), spare both of them (shows Danny being spared) or if you spare Danny and kill Andy (shows Danny being spared). He is only shown killed if you kill both of them. It sucks and isn't really the way I wanted to play but I killed both of them just so it would make sense. :/

    I don't know. It depends.

Please follow the instructions to run the TWD Support Tool and post the download link to the resulting "TWD_support_data_pc.zip" or "TWD_support_data_mac.zip" to your next reply in this thread.

It's a bit convoluted, but not lost. Make backup of all relevant folders you will change below before starting.

Please disable steam cloud for TWD (In Steam, right click TWD and select "properties". Open the tab "updates" and remove the checkbox from "Enable Steam cloud synchronization for TWD).

    Then delete the contents of
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead Season Two\

    Finally copy the contents of
    C:\Users\Public\Documents\Telltale Games
    to
    %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead\

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\WalkingDead101.exe REG_SZ WIN98

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe REG_SZ VISTARTM

Now you should also get rid of that horrible compatibility mode, so the games run properly in the future.

Please check the properties of the Steam.exe, and the games .exe files, and disable any compatibility mode and "run as admin" settings.
Sometimes compatibility mode is checked, but is grayed out. Then you have to click on "Change settings for all users" at the bottom to disable the checkbox.
Afterwards try if the game works.

If the method mentioned above didn't work, you can try disabling it in the registry. Then restart the computer and try running the game again.

It looks like you somehow overwrote the prefs.prop in the S1 savegame folder by copyiing S2 savegames into it.

Please disable steam cloud for TWD S1 (In Steam, right click TWD and select "properties".

  • Hello,

I bought Season1 and 400days via Steam. Season 2 via your Website. My Season1/ 400day Saves are not found.

I used win98/winME compatibility mode after I had to start over when my savegames were gone after Season1 Episode2.

I ziped the C:\Users\Thomas\Documents\Telltale Games folder for backup after finishing 400Days.
Today I realised that there are more recent saves in C:\Users\Public\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead. I copied them to C:\Users\Thomas\Documents\Telltale. But the saves are still not found when launching Episode2.

I can't load my Season1 saves via Steam. This I don't understand, because I haven't touched Walking Dead installation or saves since playing 400days when everything worked fine. And the windows installation is over 2 years old...

(I restored the original C:\Users\Thomas\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead Folder)

Please help me. I don't want to play with a random Clem...

    Thanks in advance
