Disappointed

edited February 2014 in The Wolf Among Us

I feel that Episode 2 of The Wolf Among Us was much weaker and that it felt like it was pushed out the door a little to soon. The recap of the first episode was disjointed and confusing, but I remember what had happened in the first episode so that didn't bother me. But then the more I played the more things really started to grate on me. There were very few open moments where you could walk around and interact with the environment, something I quite enjoyed in the first episode such as going through Faith's and Toad's apartments. There was also the fact that Snow was not actually dead which I felt really weakened the ending of episode one and the tension it built. However none this made want to something so brash as rage quit or post swears on the FAQ. But the worst part was the lack of polish I saw, and the reason this worries me the most is that it makes me feel unsure about Telltale's future. I saw an animation bug that really took me out of the story and while I know and appreciate that both Wolf Among Us and Walking Dead have this neat, simplistic comic book style that focuses less on realism and more on aesthetic, sometimes characters would hold a pose for so long they looked like cardboard or their movements would seem very jerky. And finally, while I only really noticed this at the end, somewhere during my play through the music died out. It became apparent when I put the cassette in the player and Beauty commented on the song playing despite there being no music. The reason all these failures bother me is that taken as a whole it makes the game seem like it was rushed out. I also encountered a technical problem in Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 1 in which during a scene about midway, maybe two-thirds through my cursor disappeared during a dialogue with other characters making it extremely difficult to choose which response I wanted, especially since it was timed responses (no I'm complaining about the mechanic itself I think it's great at adding tension). I witnessed a friend's play through and he experienced the exact same problem at the exact same scene. What this leads me to believe is that Telltale is starting to get a bit over ambitious after how fantastic the first season of Walking Dead turned out. A new season of the Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, that Game of Thrones game they'll be doing. Telltale's spreading itself pretty widely and I'm afraid that they might not be able to give all their projects the attention and love that they deserve. I loved the Walking Dead Season 1 and I wouldn't be playing the next episode of Wolf Among Us on the day it came out if I didn't care. I'm hoping that through some source of luck or perhaps dark sorcery someone who works at Telltale see's this and realizes that maybe they're over stretching the assets or, even better, responds to tell me that I'm worrying to much and that everything is under control. I believe Telltale has found a great way to deliver strong narrative in modern gaming with great game play that doesn't rely on violence in the modern gaming scene and I want them to continue to do so which is why I have laid out my concerns here.

  • Yeah i found the episode a little weak too, but there where so many ''OMFG'' moments (Snow's alive, Holy's sister, Ichabod in the ending...) that i enjoyed it alot.

  • The title of your thread pretty much describes my feelings about this episode as well. It definitely had some good moments, but the weird technical issues and that poor episode one recap really have me scratching my head at the thought that people had to wait nearly 4 months for this.

  • I'm so disappointed. Far too short considering the numerous delays, just like TWD's season two opener, so I will never buy a season pass from Telltale again. They're stretching themselves too thin in an effort to bag a load of franchises and the quality has dropped massively.

Snow not being dead was one of my surprise moments like What?! I enjoyed it. I didn't even know how to respond anymore when trying to talk to her, lol.

During my playthrough I have not noticed any animation or music issues. You sure your computer has the system requirements and not having trouble playing the game?

  • I don't understand why would you not buy a season pass. if you are going to buy the episodes anyway, buying the season pass is cheaper, getting the episodes separetly is not going to diminish the delays anyhow...

Yeah, lack of polish... I agree

Also the locations and book of snow white are... well... poor.

I agree, episode 2 was a bit disappointing considering this near 4 month time period it took for them to release it. Perhaps it's due to the fact that aside from TWD S2 and TWaU, I have never waited for each individual episode to release one at a time for any episodic video game. However, I do want to be left with a sense of satisfaction after finishing each individual episode. I wish they would also work on all these lags that I have experienced with episode 2 on the PS3. It made the entire episode almost unplayable :/

  • Don't expect a revolutionary episode just because you had to wait nearly 4 months. It seems that there have some real problems occurred during the development. EP3 preview screen changed and the preview from EP1 is complete different.

Don't get me wrong, I thought that was a fun and entertaining episode and I wasn't expecting a revolutionary episode, I was expecting a more polished episode

  • I played it on PC and had 0 problems. Sounds like you need to move away from obsolete technology.

or maybe TellTale needs to test the game to make sure their ports are working before releasing a game. I've never had these kinds of issues with other TellTale releases prior to this one.

As somebody who is a fan of Telltale's TWD series (never played TWAU), this is concerning. It really appears that Telltale has in fact stretched themselves too thin - You guys had to wait like 4 months for the second episode to release and it looks like the second episode of TWD Season 2 isn't releasing until late February or March.

It is disappointing to hear that you guys had to wait such a long time for an episode, that by most accounts, just wasn't very good. I hope TWD doesn't suffer a similar fate...

I agree with the OP that the reveal of Snow White so early in the episode removed a significant portion of the tension that we had built up.The first episode did an outstanding job of building up your emotions and feelings towards Snow White and then suddenly dashing it with her supposed death in the end. The impact of that was keenly felt and was a significant motivator for playing through the episode.

When they revealed her as being alive, while I initially felt relief, I also suddenly lost my emotional attachment to the plot and viewed the rest of the episode more objectively than before. It was still interesting and fun to play through but I feel at this early stage in the series that something has been lost as I am not craving episode 3 like I craved episode 2. I partly think that if the episode had been written differently and they instead revealed Snow White as being alive later in the episode or later in the series it may have been more effective.

  • Story issues really for the delay, I'm wagering. If episode 1 is played, parts of the preview for episode 2 have been removed. Those parts, that were originally in, never appear in episode 2 either. (I played episode 1 today, before episode 2's release, so it's quite clear some of the updates must have changed things)

So, unless they run into story issues, I wouldn't worry about The Walking Dead.

  • What was there was good. But it was really short, and the whole thing seems like a rewrite. Many of the scenes from the preview at the end of Episode 1 were noticeably missing. I have a feeling he entire Puddin' and Pie scene was cut back for nudity issues.

The whole Crane thing is kind of weird too. I also didn't like how it showed us things we shouldn't have been able to see. Like if they had left the scene with a simple clue like the part where you can make out the frame of the mirror, and maybe the feet of the man watching. But to just outright show us Crane was a bit ham fisted.

All in all it was a good experience, but after four months I expected more.

  • Sounds like you are desperate to deride an opinion, so you straw manned it.

  • This hour and a half of gameplay is a ripoff and like many other brands quantity over quality. Telltale started out so great but now its turned to shit.

  • Care to explain why you feel this way besides "it's to short." Or are you just here to spew vile and hate for no reason.

You're saying that like it's an illegitimate excuse.

  • I'm not disappointed. Nerissa's dance was good. Bigby will come back.

  • I'm not sure if being pushed back was the main reason. Being pushed back may have been a byproduct of why the episode was less than I expected. The episode was ok. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great.

However, I still enjoyed it, and I still greatly look forward to the rest of the series.

  • I thought it was great, but too short.

One thing I will say though is that ending. Ichabod's hand up fake Snow's skirt almost made me heave.

  • I too had a feeling that this episode lacked all the good things for which I have kept coming back to TWD.

The story felt blunt to me, nothing gripping and I feel like I care less about the characters then I felt after e1.
What stroke me most though was that there were really no tough decisions to be made, something that would keep you thinking about what you have chosen and something that would have a visible impact on your game. This was amazingly well exercised in s1 of TWD, in every single episode there was this moment in which my heart would sink and I would struggle to make the decision. It's one of the cornerstones of the whole series and this game really lacks it. By making TWD, TT has raised my expectations really high towards their other products and it’s just a bit disappointing that they cannot meet their own standards with this game. I really hope that the will get their shit together and improve throughout the series.

Dissappointed is not the word I would use. I waited a while before I posted to have my anger simmer down. I wanted to avoid beast mode.

This episode sucked. The first was brilliant, compelling and left me wanting more.

This episode felt more like my little ponies than south park.

It had nothing of the edginess that the first one did and felt thrown together to get something out there.

The delay had nothing to do with boobs(censorshi) are far as I am concnerned.

I believe there is a funding issue personally.

and the storyline is so cliche...serial killer kills prostitutes....................................jack the ripper. Cmon.

  • I just wish TT would actually freaking communicate with us. Tell us why there was such a big delay or what happened to cause some obvious rewrites. They never communicate!

  • This episode was great. Not great as first episode though

  • Of course Snow isn't really dead, The Wolf Among Us is a prequel to Fables, Snow can't actually die. It also doesn't weaken the ending of the first episode, since the point was to make you think it was Snow.

  • Except that's not what happened at all, the killer isn't after prostitutes and i'm rather sure Jack the Ripper didn't use glamour.

  • It's not weird at all if you are familiar with Crane's character in the Fables universe. It was established in the comics that he had an unhealthy obsession with Snow.

  • Actually, most people seem to have enjoyed the episode and it's getting great reviews. So "By all accounts", the episode was great.

  • Except anyone familiar with Fables knew that Snow couldn't be dead because this game is a prequel to the comics, where she is alive. So she wasn't "revealed" as alive, it was a forgone conclusion. Plus, the blackmarket glamour is obviously going to be a big plot point, so it made sense that they introduced it the way they did.

My faith in Telltale is really broken after playing episode 2... I finished it with just a bad feeling, which was not expected. The whole thing felt entirely rushed... Not the kind of quality I was expecting after a 4 month wait.

  • Great episode. A tad bit too short and slightly too fast paced. But i felt like i actually made progress.

  • I played it on PC and had absolutely no bugs/glitches whatsoever, hence I can't really comprehend your complaints. Also, while the episode might have been shorter than the first one, it didn't feel that short to me, I only realized after my actual playthrough that it only took me one and a half hour. Also taking in account the overall atmosphere and the creation of tension, I enjoyed the episode a lot. I think the reason for all the criticism is simply that this episode felt different than the first one, which isn't neccessarily a bad thing. People just need time to get used to it. I replayed it several times and ennjoyed each playthough. So you all can say whatever you want, I'll stand by my opinion, this episode was fun and thrilling.

  • This episode was pretty good. The length might have been a little lacking, but with the supposed development turmoil, I'm not really surprised. Hopefully things will be smoother from here on out.

  • You are absolutely right, i felt the same when playing this second episode.. lack of freedom was a very major concern for me
