Mixed Reviews

edited February 2014 in The Wolf Among Us

I'm looking through the threads for The Wolf Among Us, and I see all these threads saying how "disappointed they are" yet seeing others telling how "Great it was". What's with the mixed basket?

Well, to me at least, it's what you prefer to get out of the game. There wasn't a lot of action or big decisions to make during the course of the game, but the episode raised a lot of good questions and had a lot of OMG moments.

It was more of a "moving the investigation forward" kind of episode.

I personally liked it but it wasn't better then episode 1.

  • Screw u telltale for not releasing on ios today or giving an exact date for ios release.. Are we second class citizens and the hour and a half length of episode 2 that is being reported is a joke.. Either hire enough support to stick to original quality or lower your damn prices.. Godddamn joke

  • people need to remember this is a mystery story and as such it did a very good job if pushing it forward.

  • Are you fucking serious? Do you not know that iOS has a "zero nudity" policy? That's obviously why they delayed it: so they can convince them to allow their game on iOS.

  • Basically, it was good but short, unpolished, and felt like a filler episode. After a 4 month wait, that's not good enough for some.

The mixed reviews are to do with people expectations and hype and i think they expected more after the long delay, I didn't think it was bad but i didn't love it either it felt kind of "meh", The length was ok but after such a long wait i expected it to be slightly longer, There where a few twists that i didn't expect but i wasn't surprised by the ending so didn't feel any satisfaction from playing it, It felt slightly slower paced with more investigating and talking rather than action and i didn't feel the story progressed much in this episode.

  • I...just finished Episode 2. It was...truly mindblowing...I just have one thing that I didn't like: Your choices barely affect the outcome.

  • It's a mystery novel and we as the detective are gathering clues. It's moving the story along, but some people prefer their detectives to be more like Sam Spade then Sherlock Holmes. Truth is though you can't jut go around beating the crap out of people all the time, if your playing a detective or any law enforcement characters eventually your going to have to investigate the case instead of just punching subjects.

If I had any complaint about the episode, it would be that it felt shorter. That's all. Not much you can really do with that though, if you try to draw it out to much it may just feel more like filler instead of actually working on the facts of a case itself.

Most of that time was probably dealing with the issues with iOS rather than 'polishing' the episode. My guess is that once the issue was resolved, they said 'screw it, we can't delay it any longer, we just need to get it out there.'. now that the issue is resolved, I'm sure we can count on better episodes and length. We just need to hope no more issues arise.

  • It felt like it was a build up episode to a better episode, but the episode by itself felt dry.

  • I really doubt iOS would cause a 4 month development period. More likely they were short staffed and also had to re-jig the episode a lot in order to account for story alterations.

  • They probably had it finished for a while, but they didn't want to keep iOS users in the dark while others played the episode. You never know with these kinds of things.

it think the episode wasn't bad storywise (unlike most of the s02 episode of twd) but it was really too short. but frankly, i don't know, maybe i had too high expectations after that massive delay. because telltale didn't told us customers anything about the cause of it, i expected something "bigger". i would have loved to see more of prince lawrence in smoke and mirrors for example, because the decision to go to his place first seemed the only decision that had a real impact on the story so far. and somehow, after the equal short new episode of twd, i fear that short episodes like this are becoming usual for telltale games now? also i thought that the preview we got to see at the end of the first episode would be the preview for smoke and mirrors, similiar how it was with twd. but actually it seems to give only few hints about the upcoming episode and more about the whole series.

also i wondered about something: today i played the first episode again and i believe to remember, that there were more options to interact with colin than after the download of smoke and mirrors?

  • In that case they would have spent the wait polishing the episode, which clearly didn't happen.

The preview in episode one was very different with about 80% of it not happening, i think the delay was cause by them rewriting the episode as the preview for episode two has apparently changed when they released it, also the slide for episode 3 is different so they could have rewritten most of the games story which could have caused the long delay.
