Question for those who played the older games

Okay, I'm something of a completionist, but before TT came out with ToMI, I had never played any of the original games. Still, having a lot of confidence in TT, and being naturally attracted by monkeys, I went ahead and pre-ordered. I was able to get a hold of the original games and have finished the first game and am halfway (I think) through the second one. Will it enhance my ToMI game-playing experience to hold off until I finish the originals, or will it not really make much of a difference?

I'm kind of antsy to start launch of the screaming narwhal, but I'd rather catch the references to past games and whatnot. Those who have played the new and the old, what do you recommend?

If you already have the four previous games, yes, I think you should wait and follow the chronology...

If I was you I would play them in order.... just think when you are completely done you will not have too much longer to wait for episode 2... In a way I envy you... getting to experience it all at once

It's not necessary. It's pretty self-contained and self-explanatory. But alot of my favorite moments in this game drew on referencing the older games. YOu can do it, but until later may may miss out a a joke or two. But I doubt you would even notice you did.

I think having played them all will certainly enhance the experience, but it's not entirely necessary.

play them all, except the 4th one. You'll thank me later :)

Haha-- I've heard that about the fourth one. In true obsessive compulsive manner I'll probably end up playing it, though. What made it so bad?

I am in the category of those that don't consider it that bad, just the weakest of the series (but way above other adventure games).

A couple of issues that pop up a lot are that Escape went from 2d to 3d, and from mouse control to a keyboard scheme that has quite some annoying problems.

    But I still enjoyed it.

I like 4 but as mentioned before its the weak link but still a bunch of fun.....

Just hook up a gamepad change the controls to relative to the camera instead of the character and the controls are not that bad at all.... Especially if you are used to controlling characters on a console system.

The graphics on 4 are a little dated but again not too bad the worst thing is the characters... but I think the scenery holds up fairly well in that game... But its biggest downside is that it was right after the prettiest MI game, MI3..

I only played one Money Island on sega CD I think, and I can't even remember which one it was, I don't even remember the game that well because I was so young when I played it. I haven't finished playing the first chapter of this one yet, but not having the experience of earlier games hasn't really hurt my enjoyment of this one, at least not any that I can tell, I can still follow the story in this one. There is this vodoo lady and apparently she's been in the previous games, so there were some references there that I probably missed. But I'm not that bothered by it.

If it was Sega CD, it was the first one.

There were only two console ports IIRC, the Sega CD one of the first game, and the PS2 one of the fourth game.

    Money Island :D

The voodoo lady is in the first Monkey Island too, but the pixely graphics are such that I've never thought she bore much resemblance to her current form (CMI on). In fact when I played the first game as a kid I really couldn't tell whether the voodoo person was male or female, really. I may be alone in this though.

Wow, thanks guys. I think I'll go ahead and just finish the originals and then play through the newer ones. I'm one who likes to catch the small things. Its really nice being able to have this much gaming experience in one place for some quick advice.

Yeah, but we are getting the third and fourth shortly, with TMI coming to WiiWare and SMI:SE coming to XBLA.

I re-played them all before Tales Of Monkey Island... Its worth playing them first...

I did the same, i replayed all 4 monkey island before starting ToMI, and frankly , the only problem with monkey island 4 was the control scheme, because it dropped point and click for a point of view system instead. But the story was as fun, and reference to older games in my view is a critical part of the humour of this game. I mean , how could you think its funny ****SPOILER*** that he has to take a deep breath in order to pick up the porcelain doll, while calling a three headed monkey? ***END SPOILER*** All these subtle little details make the charm of this whole series imo. There are so many characters that i'm hoping to see again.. and its good to see that TellTale followed the story so far.

One little detail escapes me, they didn't explain the transition between monkey island 4 and 5 .. but , they never explained the transition from 2 to 3 either.

It's worth playing them, but it's not crucial. If you're eager to jump into Tales right away, you can always go back and play the original games later.

Then replay Tales and see what you missed :)

I think you're alone on that one. :) One of voodoo lady's biggest features was her huge bouncing breasts!

I'd say play it in this order: 5, 4, 1 (special edition), 2, 3. 5th is short while the 4th is 2nd since it's an eyesore and is probably the worst in the series.

The gap between MI2 and CMI is explained once you talk to LeChuck on Monkey Island in CMI. The gap between EMI and TMI mimicks the gap between SMI and MI2, where it's obvious that a lot of adventures has happened since you last saw Guybrush (and he has grown a beard).

That and her freaky glowing green eyes. I could never understand why they changed them to brown/black and the facepaint this time around kills her look of mystery. She looks like a clown :s

I want the glowing green eyes back!
