Graphics Settings, 1 to 9, what's the difference?

So, what's the difference on the quality numbers?

1 to 9. Can we have some more details on each number?

Thanks :)

Main difference I see is lighting and how shiny things are

For me, it's the grade of how navigationable the title screen is. 1 is totally navigationable, 9 is throw-your-keyboard-out-of-your-window-day.

Hmm... it all works really well for me... Im not actually bragging either... because my system is literally held together with some tape, and you have to jam a wire in it to open the DVD drive.

im pretty positive i meet all the system requirements but there is definately something wrong with my graphics. for example the voodoo paper thong at the start and the inventory and completely black. any ideas?
  • edited July 2009
    Any specific details? Like:

    1- no shadows
    2- no aa
    3....

Are your video card drives up to date?
    Any specific details? Like:

Only one I know is that below 7 the F4 function (it shows the clickable parts of the screen while obscuring the rest) ceases to function.

well I know at 5, where I set mine at, I lost Depth of field effects, if that helps.

With settings bellow 7, at a certain point in the game, you're missing an essential detail of the graphics. I posted this already with a spoiler screenshot in the support forum, but it's obviously enough that you will know when you reached that point.

Not necessarily. I set graphics to 1 without this special problem.

For me, the main difference was:
1 - running the game fluently
5 - having difficulties to solve puzzles where the time is limited
9 - getting a nervous breakdown while trying to hit anything with the mouse cursor

Ditto. I didn't notice any particualr difference in the graphics by turning it down to 5, but it the mouse was so much easier to move around, especially in the title screen.

Mine is set to 9 and everything looks perfect...

I finished the game on 3 and didn't find any visual glitches that make a puzzle unsolvable.

Not that it is really a panacea, but if you're having serious graphics card issues, make sure your graphics card driver is updated. It's one of those things where it certainly can't hurt, and just might fix a problem.

I had no problems navigating with the graphics turned up full-blast. To me it seems the most you lose is some dynamic shadows/lighting effects and some smoothness. However I also play in windowed mode so I don't get quite the full experience, compared to some, and I also have a decent computer (about 2 years old, a laptop, but sufficiently souped up so I can play some MMOs).

Ok people, thanks for the info on your experience, but no official word on that settings?

    No readme explaining it?
  • edited July 2009
Come on developers, where are you?

Nobody can explain the settings? Each number?

On my old laptop 9 is black and white and lasts 4 seconds before powering off and smelling like burning rubber....

and 1 is black and white and lasts 6 seconds before powering off and smelling like burning rubber

    :P

I think Toshiba already have. It's called Toshiba Satellite!

Actually I shouldn't really say that should I?

I'm sure not *all* Toshiba craptops are lap. I mean Laptops are crap.

I don't really know. I was playing on 9 and wasn't too impressed by the graphics so I went into my Nvidia control panel and overrode the game settings in favour of maxing out everything. The game still ran perfectly smoothly, and looked much nicer too.

I have that style dvd drive in my PC too, and I have to slam the tray shut to stop it opening and closing 3mm by itself continuously.

I played through the game on 3, and when I went back to replay it, I set it to 6. Everything is so much brighter! The Screaming Narwhal is actually white, not gray! The pyrite parrot looks like it's made of fool's gold instead of brown! I might go back and check what the differences are between each level, but running this on a low level certainly means everything is going to look really dingy.

I'm thinking the 1 to 9 scale is a bit too simple. For example I hate bloom effects, but don't mind bump mapping. I'm still trying to find the right number for that. :p

    Negative eight.

Oh my god, no developer to talk about it?

Call it a BAD support. Man... .. no manual, no readme, nothing, nada.

Pretty sure this has already been answered in another thread, if you search.

1, 2, and 3 are the very basic graphics settings and your hardware needs to support at least Shader 1.0.

4, 5, and 6 add some better lighting, AA, and all of that jazz. Your hardware needs to support at least Shader 2.0 to run this well.

7, 8, and 9 add full-screen post-processing effects. Your hardware needs to support at least Shader 3.0 to run this well.

Bump, normal, and specular mapping fall in there somewhere -I'm not sure where exactly.

Also, you can probably try to run the game at a graphics level that your hardware doesn't support, but that means that support will be emulated on your CPU which will make your computer cry.

I was hoping to find an 'Enable 2D Mode' option that when clicked played an audio file of uncontrollable laughter and taunted me with random gags for even thinking it was a real option. :)

"Voodoo paper thong?" Wow I must have missed that part of the game. Does Elaine wear a voodoo paper thong? That must be sexy.

Anyway, the graphics setting is about as simple as can be and still people fuss over it? Just set it to the highest number at which you get a decent framerate. That's it. This isn't like some hyper-realistic action shooter where you're going to have a noticeably different experience based on the graphics settings.

I finished the game on 9 with no issues, but that's probably because I paid over $400 for my video card.

I just bought a Radeon 4850 for 137 € (~194$) incl. shipping. It runs fine at 1920x1200 and graphic level 9. The best of all: It is passively cooled, which is important to me, because i hate cooling solutions with noisy fans. And it only needs 13 Watt more than my old 7600GT while in idle, which is important to me concerning heat and energy costs.
My whole system idles around 115 and 150 Watt. Now that i see that i should try to optimize the cpu settings, so it doesn't increase the speed for every few percent of load.
It's a Phenom II X4 940, which due to it's 4 cores has plenty of power for multiple desktop applications even if the cores run at only 800-1300MHz.

Now that was the second longest off topic i've ever seen.
