Did you play the game with the Hint system turned all the way up or down?

The first thing I did was turn the hint system all the way down to no bars. It took me 9 hours to beat, but where is the fun when the game tells you what to do. I loved the game and have started playing it all over again. Looking forward to the next one.

I play with mine turned up just because they sometimes have funny lines in the hints.
  • edited July 2009
I play mine with the hints switched off. Now that you mentioned the funny lines, I will turn the hints all the way up for my second play through.

Yes 9 hours total gameplay.... I am sure i am not all that fast, but wow what a great game!!!

Played with hints at default, which is 3/4, I think. Still got lost for hours at a time, though, as the hints were useless. Always said the most obvious things in the world, and never pointing me towards the parts of the puzzle I was struggling with. Might as well have played with it off.

    There were hints?
  • edited July 2009
I kept it down. I turned it up at one point when I got stuck and then I realized it was completely useless, so I turned it back down.
  • edited July 2009
Turned the hints off and will do so in the next episodes. Took me around 3-4 hours and the game isn't that hard and if I really get stuck I can allways look for a solution on the forums.
  • edited July 2009
I did it without hints, and I think it took me about 5-6 hours.

I played without hints. Got through the game in just a little over three hours.

    My favorite hint line involves
    indiscriminate cannon fire

I didn't even notice the option for hint frequency, so I played the whole thing at default. But it never really gave anything away. The only hint I remember was "This jungle is noisy", relating to the first treasure map. But I'm sure I would've figured it out anyway. But to be on the safe side, I'll turn off hints next time.

CaptainWicket, in my game Threepwood said that noisy jungle line even though I had hints turned off.

Maybe the hint settings was not working properly for me.

I didn't even know there was a hint system, I left it at default and didn't really get any hints at all... I think once Guybrush said something about the wind compass thing, but I was in the process of using the item when he started to say something about it...

The game was kind of on the short side. I don't see how you could've goten 9 hours out of it. I think I barely got 3 hours out of it. Maybe 4, tops.

The game clocked around 9 hours for me as well without hints. I didn't even use one hint the whole time I played. And the "jungle sure is noisy" line didn't play enough times to clue me into that solution; I figured that out on my own. For me some of the puzzles were pretty hard; I'm no expert at puzzles even though I've played a lot of adventure games.

It appears that even when turned all the way down, it's not turning it OFF, it's just making the frequency of hints very low. So you could still get "lucky" and have him say something.
  • edited July 2009
I turned the hints down a single notch before starting the game, but every time a hint popped up, my first thought was always, "Well, yeah....I thought of that part already. What now?" So I don't know that it helped really. I might just shut them off entirely in the next episode.

It took me about 4 hours to finish the game.

just wondering, i have the hint system off, but i still seem to get hints when i am following the map, Guybrush says "this looks promising" when i go the corect way, and when doing the idol puzzle Guybrush mentions that the symbols could be related to the weather vane.
  • edited July 2009
Turned them off and relied on guides when I got stuck. I don't see the need of having hints thrown at me when I don't need them.
  • edited July 2009
I had hints all the way off and didn't use a walkthrough/etc once. Even then Guybrush still mentioned some things such as the faces on the weather vane.
  • edited July 2009
i was determined to play with no hints or walkthroughs - and after 10 gruelling hours or so i am proud to say i finally succeeded this morning! yeah the faces on the weather vane was the only hint i got even though hints were off - it is probably an unintentional bug

i played with them all turned down and it took me a little over 3 hours
    got stuck a few times
    but not for too long

I feel so SMRT for having solved this game on hint level none in about 4-5 hours. Maybe it's just my mind that's a bit twisted after playing too many of these puzzle adventure games allowing me to think of things as obvious even though they're not :p Or maybe the game was just a tad easy. I've struggled with most of the Sam&Max episodes though.

I'm very happy that I remembered to turn off hints the first thing I did. I took time to talk to people and spent some time just enjoying stuff, cleared it in 4 hours.
  • edited July 2009
Maybe they should have the Hint System off by Default... And I did get the hint about the weather vane with the Hints turned off. I would have rather figured that one out my self. I even remember stopping the game to check if i really had them off.

I think the hints should be removed completely... none of the other monkey island games had them in. Its temptation for people to 'swith it on just for a few mins' and then pretend they never did it.

Just remove it completely.... dont like the idea at all and is not what I personally buy games like this for... I want it to be hard and spend hours over one little sodding thing to get me to the next step :D

Hints = cheats in Monkey Island... simple.

I find that the hint system is only good for letting you know what you're supposed to accomplish rather than how to accomplish it. As such, when I really need a hint it just tells me what I already know. So I don't even use it. It certainly was no help in SBCG4AP either, but I survived it anyway.

I too had hints turned all the way down. It still gave occasional hints like "I think these clouds on the map represent wind." But I had already figured that out at that point.

I finished in 4 hours without any help. I was taking my time exhausting every dialog and examining everything multiple times to hear all the funny remarks.

I found this game to be moderately easier than the previous games, but still difficult enough that you feel a sense of accomplishment when you figure something out. Agree or disagree?

Hints system on lowest possible, only hint I ever heard was "This Jungle is Noisy", took around 4 hours tops to finish it, I liked the puzzle style in this one, it's the kind that makes me feel like it's obvious after I figured it out.
  • edited July 2009
I turned it all the way at first, I did turn it up to high frequency twice when i got stuck then turned it back down again. The hints it gave pretty much had me finding the solutions within minutes of hearing the hint, wish I hadnt now though... Its a puzzle game, there no fun in it if you get i handed to you on platter. The problem I find with them is that you can change them during game play, I wish i could set the level at the beggining of the game and then it couldn't be changed that way I wouldn't be tempted to turn them back on. Its like being able to turn the difficulty down if you get stuck. Puzzle game--- Stuck=Frustration and Fun

That sounds about right. Your experience playing the game was very close to mine.

    0 hints
    about... 4-5 hours?

I like working it out myself, makes me feel smart!
  • edited July 2009
Yea I had the hint thing turned all the way up but whenever guybrush gave a hint it was something I already knew about. I did get stuck a couple times and had to check the forums but that was more impatience of wanting to finish the game on my day off as I knew I wouldnt have time till like Sunday otherwise!
  • edited July 2009
I don't actually recall many hints. There might have been the odd occasion when Guybrush said something but it was something I knew anyway.

Then when I did get stuck there were no hints to help out. Which is good.
  • edited July 2009
I want them to make guybrush shut up with the hints when hint freq. is 0 though
  • edited July 2009
    All the way down :)

Turn it up for the funny lines in the second round seems a nice idea...

Oh, I remind you that MI2 itself had a "easy" mode! (Dreadful, but it was there :p )

Obviously I turned the hint system totally down.
"I want it all! All the puzzles! All the work!"

I turned off hints. I find TTG's Games easy enough without them.

This is a bad idea because the people who need them the most would be the people who don't know there is an option to change it.

I don't agree with this either. There are people that like having the hints, and would not like the game if they were not there. It's good to have the option there so that more people can enjoy the title.

Although this would not affect me, because I always set the hint level to zero the whole time, it is good to have the ability to change settings mid-game. This allows people who get stuck, to not have to start the game from scratch, just to get a hint. This would be extremely frustrating for anyone who falls into this scenario.
