My goodness, this is indeed good news! I can't wait to try it out. Thanks, guys!:)

I just tested out the new version, and it seems to be a big improvement. Telltale Games, you rock my world!
  • edited August 2009
The new installer is ~28mb larger, which should be much nicer sounding :)
  • edited August 2009
Big props to Telltale for releasing this update.

If an extra 28mb is all that it took to increase the audio quality, then there's no reason to lower the compression again in future releases.

And to think people were scared it would increase the file size by a gigabyte. :P

Wallace and Gromit's The Bogey Man was almost 500mb and I never saw anyone complain about the filesize for that :p

Thank you for listening to us TT and I hope the better audio continues into the remaining chapters. :)

Thank you Telltale!! You rock my world!!

Thankyou very much. This sounds much better to me. I hope this increased sound quality continues through your future titles. Oh, and don't forget to share this update with our friends using Steam. Now if we can just increase the number of repeated generic pirate models from 2 (fat+skinny) to around five or so (ideally they'd all be unique, but let's not get ahead of ourselves), I'll be a very happy gamer.

Thanks again, we really appreciate the fix - even if it is a little late :)

    THANK! YOU! SO! MUCH!!!!!!!!!

    :D:D:D

I love you! I love you all! :o

There is one word and that word is AWESOME!

Thank you, Telltale! This is a big improvement. Not perfect, but the really annoying sounds seem to have disappeared (and the level of quality is probably enough that I personally won't notice anything unless I'm specifically paying attention)
  • edited August 2009
Thank you so much! I know some people didn't mind, but for a lot of us the nasty compression really ruined the mood. The difference between the new version and the original is like night and day!

I really hope that you keep the voices at this level of compression (or even slightly higher bitrate) for the rest of the season:)
  • edited August 2009
:) You might want to post this on the blog for more passive fans, Telltale. Just sayin'.

Thank you so much guys! So awesome.

Telltale once again proves that they're the best gaming company around, listening to their fans whine* and actually doing something about it.

(* I didn't have a problem with it, but that's not the point.)

Thanks for listening to us Telltale, my faith in online episodic gaming grew three sizes today. :)

Thanks Telltale, only did a quick test but now it sounds much better, I hope that all games that come after this comes with atleast similar quality.
Elaine was probably the worst and now I can't find any major flaws with her voice.

    Thanks again for the patch!

Now, just release a patch for Steam, and everyone's happy!
  • edited August 2009
    Thank you, TT :).

Nice work guys, there's at least minor improvements over most characters in the game and a damn big improvement with Elaine, I've made a little comparison of the two versions for folks to listen to and judge for themselves if the re-download is worth it (I think it is, just listen to Elaine from 17 seconds onwards!).
  • edited August 2009
    Excellent. I appreciate this!

    Nice... well done TTG

Well I'll be back here whining again if next month's release has crappy audio, so don't put a full stop on the matter just yet. ;)

I don't hear any difference. But I also did not have any problem with the audio. Elaine is still hissing a lot but I don't mind it. The Voices file now has about the same size as in Ep. 1. With about the same amount of dialogue this would mean the moaners would still have to moan.

    You are wrong!
The audio is way better than the original compression, and I also hear a better quality than Screaming Narwhal, which had occasional hissing from the other characters.
The hissing from Ash's recording is just from the recording itself.

Hope Telltale will keep up this excellent quality standard.

Now, I think it's time to let this thread die a silent death. Agree?

Not really, the sound is not the only thing that is over-compressed, IMO the textures needs to be better.

Agreed, but not always. I love this game, and Monkey Island, and more than those combined I love Telltale, but the textures in the Marquis DeSinge cutscene in Ep2 were just unacceptable. I never thought they'd have something like that in their game honestly.

don't let it die just yet...
I want to say: GOOD work TT!!!
Although it didn't bother me before... It's WAY better then it was!
    NICE!

    Thanks..

No offense, but if you don't hear the difference between the comparison files put together by Ash735, then you don't have tin ears - you have lead ears.

Either that, or you're using speakers with the dynamic range of a 1950's telephone receiver.

This is not a matter of audiophiles nitpicking (most audiophiles are gullible saps who pay hundreds of dollars for what amounts to magic wire that's no better than lamp chord). The sound quality in episode 1 was not horrible. That of episode 2 manifestly was.

Now, I just have to wait for the update to make its way onto Steam, and I'll be able to play the game again (yes, it's that bad).

First off, I agree with Thanny 1000%.

Secondly, I say we let this thread die and move all conversation of its ilk to this thread:
    http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11790

The reason being, the problem is fixed now, and if this thread keeps getting bumped to the top, potential players may visit the board, see the title, and assume it's an ongoing problem. We don't want anyone to be unduly turned off. After all, I think we're all rooting for this series' success.

On the other hand, if the problem reappears in a future episode, I'll be bumping this thread myself.

Excuse me but I'll have you know my recording equipment is set up perfectly fine and the hissing is infact from the game, this is not some botched recording and I'm insulted that you even said that!
  • edited August 2009
    Any objections to salmonmax' plan?
  • edited August 2009
I'd still like to see higher quality textures and more varied models. I'm not going to make as big a deal about it as I did with the audio (textures+models don't hamper the ability to enjoy the game nearly as significantly), however it's still annoying. Glad they fixed the audio though.

    Gulp! :O
I'm sorry if I offended you, but I thought it sounded better in the actual game. Maybe my ears are playing tricks on me! :)

It's an illusion, the ambient sounds and music help mask some of the hissing.

Yeah me too, they really need to do something about the textures.
  • edited August 2009
It's the recycled character models that really get to me. If you HAVE to recycle them, up the number to five or six generics, just to add some variety.

This thread should die now. All the complainers got what they wanted, and Telltale will probably increase the download size from here on out. If the size reaches the ridiculous size of SoMI:SE though, I will be sad.
