Xbox one controller does not work for PC (wrong button prompts) - for any telltale game!

I recently upgraded my htpc with new gpu and was excited to play all my telltale games on the big screen. I'm running windows 10 with an xbox one controller with wireless adapter and it didn't work for any tell tale game - the controller wasn't even recognized.

I then read the tip of launching the game as administrator which makes the game recognize the controller. I'm not sure why this is necessary as all my other controller supported games in steam work fine.

Now the prompts don't seem to be correct. For example, it will say RT (right trigger) when you actually need to hit the left trigger. This makes the game pretty hard to play.

I know telltales official response is only the wired xbox 360 controller is officially supported - but I think that's not a good response. The xbox one controller is becoming more mainstream. Also, I don't understand why it works but the prompts are wrong?

If a game has controller support it should probably support more than one controller. Are there any plans to make the telltale games compatible with xbox one (and other) controllers?

The Telltale engine uses DirectInput8 for Controller support.
That technology is a legacy technology that I doubt Microsoft will ever update (except for security related issues).

The main problem with DirectInput8 is that it has limitations on the way it treats an XBOX (360) controller and Telltale's engine is probably built around that limitations.

Some things were changed in DirectInput8's successor called XInput from version 1.3 and 1.4 (the one used in Win8/Win10) and Microsoft stated that some older APIS were obsoleted (and probably that is also the reason why some things do not work with your XBOX One controller)

So the only option to solver the XBOX One controller issue is plainly for Telltale to update its engine to support XBOX One controllers (changing the underlying technology or updating their workarounds) and to re-release its older and current games with the updated engine and that is highly unliquely.

  • Thanks for the informative reply. It seems like the controller does work fully (all buttons work) once you run as admin. It's just the prompts that aren't correct, I wonder if they are correct with an xbox 360 controller. Either way, I will follow your suggestion:

**Telltale, please update your game engine to work correctly with the XBOX One controller! ** Your games are perfect for the living room experience and you should keep your games up to date as technology changes.
