Game install confusion
Please don't beat me for being a newbie here.
I purchased the game. Waited until I knew I had a computer that could play it (Bought it literally this morning) and installed it. It has a short cut on my desk, and when I click it to Launch it...it shows me the main screen, then tells me to Launch game. But as soon as I click that, I get a white box and then Windows tells me that it's encountered an unexpected error and must close the game.
Solutions? Or what am I doing wrong?
Windows Vista Premium 64
4Gb RAM
Intel Core2 Solo Processor
Nvidia GeForce 105M

Quite honestly, as someone with all of the previous 4 etc MI games on Amiga-PC, I feel that the bollox surrounding paying unrefundable e.g. £24.99 upfront for 5 -part often unworking digital download is a thieving immoral disgrace.
This week I established:
1) I cannot get my money back - first time in my 57 years of life this has occurred/1st game-install failure etc on computers since 1990.
2) It will not run on/crashes my ancient fantastic brilliant XP fully updated 2003 Sony Vaio 2.8 P4 1 gb NVidia TI4200, whatever I have tried (17 things over 24 hours including deleting e.g. Viruscheckers ...).
3) HOORAY - I got it running after 17 hours on 30 month old year old Vista Home P. Fujitsu Amilo Pi 1505 1 + half gb after initial lag/mouse probs AFTER folllowing topics on this etc site and setting on game front-end SETTINGS video quality to lowest 1 and to playing etc in window and not full-screen.
Quite honestly, I think that here in UK all the good publicity STEAM-Telltale has received over this week on e.g. CH4 TV text games section is based on fantasy land ...
I suspect that in the real world most people have had more problems installing etc this unrefundable download than anything ...
Will the 4 next parts of TOMI each require a higher-spec/aptly setup PC????
BTW even on little laptop the game at minimum vid. setting looks/runs fine ...
Good luck in reaching success for your unrefundable download - I am confident that you will.
I am concerned that if in October I buy a new Windows 7 PC I shall also spend days trying to get Monkey Island 5 to run.
I advise anyone considering buying this game to try the alleged free DEMO first - I didn't/wasn't aware that it existed.
64bits ...
SPOILER
Now I must go and power-up the lappie and continue from 3 hours doing it/post-treasure burying bit/2 hours after trying in pink bloomers blowing up ship-captain after eventually tring to climb clothes-line with lit bomb in place ...
And on another point.. I've had absolutely no problem running and playing the game. In the world of modern PC gaming, it's inevitable that software is not going to work for everybody.
And.. the game download itself *is* the demo. The demo includes all the same files as the full game.. you only need a serial key to activate the full game.
A bit of the ol' tinkerer's curse here. Most people have stock standard PCs bought less than 3 or 4 years ago; and for these people the game runs fine without hassle.
I'm all for playing around with computers, but if you want to run consumer games and applications you need a pretty clean standard setup -- personally I use my 'work' machine, which is strictly unmodified 32bit winxp, with no fancy hardware, drivers, hacks, patches, dual boot, softice, linux partitions, or anything else out of the ordinary. I suggest others do the same.
Telltale are giving refunds. A simple read of these forums will confirm that
Really? So everyone on this forums who has no problems are also living in a fantasy land? What about everyone on the other forums I visit who have bought the game and not complained about a single technical issue? Fantasy land? yeah right.
I respect your having issues, then again, your trying to run the game on a Geforce 4, it only has support for Pixel Shader 1.3, I can't imagine what else you would expect. Just because you have issues does not mean anyone who doesn't, or meets the minimum specs for that matter, is living in a fantasy world.
I'm sure they will, seeing as it is refundable as already stated.
What's that supposed to mean? Allegedly free? You really think Telltale are trying to make you pay for the demo somehow?
One of the worst cases of trolling I've seen on these forums.
As for that GeForce 105M of the thread starter - I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it had a very hard time of playing this game; according to Wikipedia, this graphics chipset (which is their current-gen bottom-of-the-barrel offering) has a whopping 8 shader cores, while nVidias high-end mobile chipsets have 16 times as many (i.e. up to 128), and that's still less powerful than their high-end desktop offerings.
Which isn't *that* fantastic. The graphics card scrapes the minimum requirement of 128MB dedicated video RAM, and coupled with the low-version pixel shader support, does not make for a good graphics card by today's standards. That'd be where your problems lie.
Your second PC too... "30 month old year old"? I'm afraid I don't quite understand what you mean by that.
1.5GB RAM, although over the "recommended", is still relatively little for Vista to run; performance issues are to be expected. Especially with games as it's a budget laptop - it has an Intel graphics chipset and I know from personal experience that those are absolutely terrible at running most games, except with the settings right down low (and that's on a 1-year-old laptop with twice the memory). Some even with the settings at their minimum.
In the real world, no, people won't have that much trouble installing this. In fact, they haven't. I would, if I tried installing it on my old system which was fine running EFMI back in the day, but specifications have changed A LOT since then.
Of course the new episodes won't need better hardware, they'll use the same engine.
@Teikae - like Yandros said, try updating your DirectX libraries.
Try here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en - that should automatically download all the updates to DirectX since you last updated it. (Ignore that it says 9.0c on the download page - I think TOMI only uses components from 9 and not 10 anyway)
I thought so too and found this statement.
Any other suggestions?
I'm still getting the launch screen...and then the white screen that says MonkeyIsland101.exe Error.
I was pleased to install yesterday on ancient 30 months old Vista HP laptop Monkey 3 and 4 (my boxed 1 + 2 already there from my Cloanto Amiga installation).
I was pleased to see 3 + 4 run full-screen.
I was pleased to get 5 run on ancient lappie in GFX startup 1-window.
I am frightened to buy a new computer in case Monkey 5 doesn't run even in small window.
Good luck.
I still every other day try to tweak old brilliant XP m/c settings without joy for TOMI running.
