Grim Fandango movement

Give us the option to turn on Grim Fandango style movement controls. W is always walk/run forward. A, D to rotate. S walks backwards.

I hate being forced to deal with game pad style controls. This goes for the inventory too. Let me drag and drop to combine. I find that I'm forced to do a lot more clicking then I need to.

The above would also go for Sam & Max Season 3 if it's not point and click.

Maybe Telltale will make Sam & Max Season III about a case involving the mysterious disappearance of thousands of Adventure gamers beloved Point & Click :)

Ooor maybe they'll make a game about point and click is means, not an end. The end of the adventure game is a story and humor. You're not playing to point and click a lot.

Did you tried to press WASD in game???

That's not what he meant. Grim Fandango had Alone in the Dark (or Resident Evil if you were born a few years later) so called "Tank" controls. You use A and D to turn, and W is always Forward regardless of the direction your character is facing, or even the camera angle.

Tales uses more of a Mario 64 control scheme, where W is up, A is left, D right and S down.

It is my impression that most people on the Internet hate tank controls, so this is the first time I hear someone wanting them back.

I believe the OP is asking for "character relative" controls vs. "camera relative" controls included in ToMI.

I actually misinterpereted the title initially and jumped in hoping to see someone rallying a political movement for Grim Fandango. :)

:) That would be a movement. There were some spots in grim fandango where you had to run up some stairs then make a 180 and go up another flight. With the "tank" controls you could do it in one fluid motion running without stopping.

I found the screen relative controls in ToMI to be a bit wonky as the streets and paths were seldom straight N,S,E,W. They work well in Wallace & Gromit. The rooms are more open and large. Maybe it's because I'm not holding down Shift the entire time. W&G move at a good pace. I do like how if you are holding down the left key to go left and the camera changes direction in that section of the room that you will continue to move forward regardless of the new angle until you release the key. W&G also seems to be a graphically less intense game so the frame rate is a bit higher.

Maybe the best adventure game controls would be one where you don't control the characters except when you need to change rooms. You can play Sam & Max like that in rooms that don't need to scroll. They just walk to the hot spot as needed.

Back to game controls... I've only ever owned two consoles. An Atari 2600 and the NES. I tried to play a FPS on a console at a friends house and felt like I just got off the short bus. Keyboard and mouse all the way for the FPS. I will say that I liked the game pad on the computer version of GTA for car driving then I would switch to keyboard / mouse for shooting.

I played flight sims in the early 90s and the original batch of FPS had flight style controls. (mouse back = look up like pulling up on a stick) The default changed overnight a few years back so that I was the one that had to invert. I took a year off the FPS then switched to the new default when I started playing The Orange Box. I don't mind it now.

Oh, I think Grim Fandango had both "character relative" controls and "camera relative". Default was character relative (tank / RC Car) controls.

I still think we should be given a choice of controls.

For the longest time, I loved inverted mouse. Then I played some RPGs like WoW (where non-inverted made more sense) and then somehow my mind had just clicked over and I couldn't go back so now I'm as good at the new setting as I used to be for the inverted one. Maybe I just need to go play Tie-Fighter 95 again.

I have to play FPS games normal, but if the game has planes it totally throws me off unless it's flight style.

I was pretty bewildered by the ToMI controls at first, but I managed to get the hang of them after a while without too much trouble.

The character relative controls were awful, as far as I remember you had to turn your character into the direction you wanted to walk before pressing forward for walking, no wonder why this control scheme nowadays has died out.

I'd buy that. Of course, only if it's point & click. :D

Grim Fandango Controls were the worst_adventure_controls_EVER. If Lucas Arts might chose to make a special edition, this should be the very first thing to consider.

I would definately like to see the option of drag-and-drop for inventory combination as well the new system for people who may not know it is an option.
Please Telltale, include drag and drop in future episodes as it feels more intuitive. I have played the game through twice and still find myself dragging to combine items-years of adventure gaming in this way is hard to shake off. Plus its a hell of alot quicker and requires less clicking :p am I lazy? probably yes. but having both methods included would be nice

also, much prefer character relative controls and an option like GF would be nice. I'm being picky now i know..

Personally, I never liked character relative controls. Either the character turns too slowly and you get irritated when you want to head in the opposite direction, or turns too quickly and it's hard to get the character to face the direction you intend for them to go (or possibly both). If the reason there is not an option to switch between the two is that TTG only had time to implement one option, then I'm glad they implemented camera relative.

that the opinion i get from most people! havent yet heard of anyone who likes character relative so I can totally understand why telltale chose the option they did. Must have spent too many years replaying Grim Fandango without changing the controls becuase they work for me and seem more natural. guess i shouldnt hold out for any changes to the control system

Well, I don't mind character relative as long as the camera is fixed and turns along with you - or if it's only 8 directions and turn based movement. ;)

What I hate is character relative movement with a fixed camera - and that's coming from someone who played through GTA 1 and 2... :D

np: Moritz Von Oswald Trio - Patterns 3 (Vertical Ascent)

In wide open areas you did not have to zig zag like pac-man to get around. You just ran in a nice smooth arc. Maybe you never played with RC cars as a kid.

Maybe if they let me use a joystick I would like it more.

I don't miss the lack of point and click because I know that the trade off is some cool close up angles. Just throwing that out there.

I did however repeatedly attempt to double click on the ground when I could see my feet.

I'm sure there are more stories in the land of the dead but it would be hard to top the original.

Maybe a 2d remake for the GF haters.

Grim Fandango is the greatest adventure game made. MI is the greatest series.
