TOMI vs Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family
After reading other threads, it seems that many other people had the same technical issue that I had. When the game launches (or rather, a few minutes after launch, when something finally happens), you get a menu screen without the menu text. All the text (save, new, settings, quit, etc) appears as red, green, and yellow blocks. Also, there is no mouse cursor. The confusing thing is, the rest of the graphics look fine.
After sifting through various technical problems, I concluded that everyone with this particular issue seemed to have one thing in common: an Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family. So I thought it would be good to start a thread for people to post how they got around this problem.
Since I have a Dell, I went to the Dell website and downloaded the latest Intel Video Driver for the 965 Express Chipset Family. After a restart, Monkey Island played great! (except for the whole...click-and-drag-to-move thing. But that's for a different thread) The game started up quickly, all the text and graphics looked great, and I had a mouse cursor! (just a note, I had to turn down the graphic quality to 1 for the mouse cursor to work properly. Otherwise, it was unwieldy.) But not everyone has a Dell, so how did you get around this issue, my Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family using friends?

Here's the Intel support site for your chip: http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-022768.htm
Thank you very much for that link anyway. Maybe I will be able to run the game with a higher quality setting now... or even some of my other games which did not run so far.
The integrated GMA clunker should turn itself off nicely and automatically once you insert a real graphics card into the nice PEG receptacle on the motherboard...
(Seriously - an ATI Radeon 4850 that runs circles around that on-board thingy from Intel can be had for less than 100 EUR, what's keeping you from getting one?)
np: Underworld - Winjer (Beaucoup Fish)
You can get cheap mid range nvidia cards for around 50$, if you have a desktop with embedded intel card, really do yourself a favor and try to get a decent graphics card, those intel adapters are the absolute low end of performance and absolutely unsuitable for 3d games!
It always has been like that only in recent incarnations they became fast enough to run rather old games.
I is more or less common knowledge, if you want to play games on your PC never ever go for something with embedded intel graphics. Intel does not want to have fast graphics they want to sell processors so they offload a lot of graphics operations onto the processor and only support the minimum of acceleration they can get away with!
Uff... the intel integrated graphics laptops are not suitable for gaming at all, if you are lucky the problems go away with newer drivers for your laptop, but I assume the intel chipset itself has a lot of problems including probably not even being able to deliver the needed speed for most games!
I rather doubt Telltale can do anything on their side, the Intel integrated graphics are broken for 3d stuff to a big degree, they are just bearly strong enough in their recent incarnations to run aero, but thats it!
The reason why every manufacturer sells those beasts is simply that they are cheap (you basically get them for free if you buy the intel notebook processor) while better performing processors would cost a few dollars, so in the end the manufacturer saves a few bucks and many customers simply do not care because they do not play games on those laptop computers anyway!
