Why do they break off Crossbows bolt when hit?

Also why did Rodrik break off the Spear after impaling Ludd

    Because it's badass.

Although, not actually smart. By pulling out a bolt or an arrow, you're essentially popping a cork in a bottle. You're going to get immediate blood loss (which is bad, obviously) cause even more damage than has already been done, and unless you immediately clean and dress the wound, removing all fragments, you're going to get infection (which, again, is bad), a fever, and provided you don't die of blood loss, you'll die of that instead. Or at the very least, be incapacitated.

Then again, Rodrik is superhuman. :)

But yeah, the real reason it's done, is the same reason swords make an unnatural schwingggggg noise when they're drawn. (They don't really make that noise. I should know, I have about nine swords. True story) Because it's badass and cool, and everyone expects it. :P Even people like me, who acknowledge how illogical it is.

Edit: The reason Rodrik breaks that spear after impaling Ludd was accidental, I believe. I think he tried use a lot of downwards force to bring Ludd to his knees (which he does) however, by so doing, he snaps the back-half of the spear. Not that it matters, since he then switches to the Forrester Greatsword. But hopefully that answered your question. :) Even though it's more interpretation than fact.

  • oh okay.. I thought It would be that the Bolt won't stay hanging somewhere in battle, which could be a disadvantage..

  • Well, yes, there is that. That's true. A bolt or an arrow in you would definitely impair mobility. Especially when using a lofty weapon like a greatsword. However, huge blood loss is also pretty detrimental when fighting. So taking it out is bad... leaving it is also bad... getting shot in general is just bad, I guess.
