Can't Find Ancient Tool--Trying To Open Clamshell...

I'm trying to open the first big idol using the clamshell next to it.

Where is this ancient tool that the doctor used to close the idol using the clamshell when he leaves? I don't seem to be able to get into his house or converse much with him so I might assume there is some other way. I haven't found any sticks--maybe that is all I'm missing? Please spoil me on this. Thank you.

You'll have to trick him into leaving the stick in the clam.

-Did you notice that after you talk to him from his balcony he decides to follow you?
-Maybe you can cause him to open the gate and wander in.
-Perhaps if he heard your voice on the other side? Anything in your inventory that could use to trick him?

Okay! I was on the right track but failed to go back and talk to the doctor--what's his name after stuffing the parrot through the hole in the door. In short order now I've finished the game. Thank you.

I never replay any games and get as much value as I can the one-time through--there are too many other games of interest to play plus other essential things of life. However, is ToMI aware that I have finished it once and knowing that does it present a slightly different game of encounters here and there? Can you mention one or two examples of things I might have missed? If I did miss them isn't it equally likely that I will miss them again?
