SOMI:SE enough to get into TOMI?

I have recently become addicted to all things telltale and I am really wanting to get into Tales of Monkey Island....however I know I am not familiar with the universe. I plan on buying The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition on Steam, do you guys think this game will be enough for me to fully enjoy the Tales series when I finish it(SOMI)?

thanks

You'll enjoy TMI even if you have not played any of the earlier MI games, but SMI:SE gives you a great introduction to the MI universe.

I know its a bit far fetched...but if I were you I would play all the games through in order. They're all great in their own way...with some being less great than others, but the fact remains. By missing MI2 and MI3, you're missing a LOT of VERY excellent gameplay.

Yeah I think so. Of course, we don't know yet just how much future episodes are going to reference the older games, but based on episode 1 you'll enjoy it just fine. I do recommend playing Curse of Monkey Island if you can manage it. I think having played CMI would enhance your enjoyment of TMI a lot. Still, I think you will have no problem enjoying Tales of MI with little or no previous Monkey experience.

I wish that I had played SOMI SE first. I had to replay TOMI again. I think that Telltale has been great about referencing the old games. That being said It's still really funny on it's own.

I don't know. Aside from the ending to CMI sort of spoiling the ending to MI2, you can pretty much play the games in any order, and still enjoy the references either forwards or backwards. You should play them all eventually, though :D

Good to see you around, Zombutler.

It's true what they say, you will be able to enjoy this game, but there IS something to be said for playing the series in order, I feel. Certainly the MI2 and MI3 are worth going back to if you do choose to play Tales instead.

Yeah, I suggest playing them in order.
If you're really curious and really really want to play ToMI, then at least play Secret of Monkey Island. You can enjoy all the other characters afterwards :)

If you are not so eager to play ToMI, I suggest you to just play SoMI:SE for now, then wait for MI2:SE if they will make it. While waiting, you could search for CoMI and EfMI (on eBay?), so that you can play all the games when MI2 comes out.. If it doesn't anytime soon, just download a rom of the classic version and play it on the ScummVM emulator. By the time you'll have all 4 finished, ToMI episodes will probably be all out, so that you can play the whole game without having to wait months between the episodes...
I think this is the best way for you.. Of course, you can also play any game not in the order and you will enjoy it, but you'll miss many funny references and can't understand many jokes..

Wouldn't recommend waiting for MI2:SE. If they DO make it, it's a big job and will take a while. The game holds up well. You may miss the speech, but the atmosphere, music, writing etc in that game speak for themselves.

I think you would benefit from trying to play them all before episode 2 comes out just in case there are some references to and characters from the previous adventures but you'll be fine playing Episode 1 after SOMI:SE.

I concur. First MI I ever played was CMI and I still had a blast. Playing them in order is definitely not essential.
