GoT PS3 when in the story do save spots happen???

I thought if the gears show, then the white tree, then it says saving at the bottom left, then its saved. But, I've found that doesn't always show where a save spot is. I've had it do that, then when I turn it off and then turn it back on later, it'll start at a different point further back. Any help would be appreciated.

    If you see gears on the bottom left, it saved. But don't turn the game off while it's saving.
