Could Double Fine Productions do Sam & Max: Hit the Road?

With their remakes of Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle (Both done excellently, by the way), could Double Fine Productions ever do a remake of Sam & Max: Hit the Road... or does TellTale kinda have a chokehold on our Freelance Police?

  • LucasArts owned Hit The Road, too, but the license to use the characters reverted back to Steve Purcell around the time Telltale was formed (and was probably the only reason Telltale could get formed in the first place). So Double Fine would probably need Steve Purcell's permission to remake Hit The Road. Personally, I'd rather see a new game.

LucasArts actually still owns the rights to Hit the Road, as they released the original version on GOG.com. So, they own the rights to their games (Sam & Max: Hit the Road, the Sam & Max SCUMMlet test game, and the cancelled Sam & Max: Freelance Police).

So Double Fine would have to get the right to make the remake from Steve Purcell and LucasArts.

They'd also probably have to get the rights from Sony as they appeared to have gone after the rights for all the LucasArts adventure titles - similar to the deal with EA for the Star Wars licence.

Since it's pretty much a rights land field for this title, I highly doubt they'd attempt it. It's also been hinted that Tim's not interested in the titles that he didn't personally work on, since he wouldn't feel comfortable working on a remake project without the original creators.

  • ...It may not be much, but it's a spark of hope :)

@DaJoestanator @DoubleFine If the original creators want to do it, and the IP holders want to do it, it could happen!
