Canon

Where exactly does Tales of Monkey Island place in the overall story of the Monkey Island series. All I know is that it takes place after Secret of Monkey Island.

I think its the next one in the series. Its a continuation. Otherwise it'd be weird to have Guybrush looking so much older.

Well. it's also obvisly aftre Curse of Monkey island since Guybrush and Elaine are married...

Also in one of the lines he says at the beggining of Tales of Monkey island:

-Guybrush: "Didn't you use to be a ghost? or a zombie? or a demon?

It takes place an unspecified number of years after Escape From Monkey Island.

He has little faith in people's ability to spell.

He's been on the forums for a while.

It's like everyone already said, it takes place after Escape from Monkey Island, and roughly 10 years since he became a pirate (Secret of Monkey Island). All the games in the series, so far, take place in order.

Yeah, I'll take that excuse for not immediately spotting the spelling errors.

When I see a thread entitled "ToMI - dont lauching" or something similar, I figure the contents are likely to be just as poorly spelled/written (possibly due to English not being the poster's first language) and I generally just skip those threads :)

But with a title like "canon" the thread could be about anything.... (well, anything canon/cannon related)

He must be getting up in years. The ol' biological clock is a ticking. I'd guess he's in his what, thirties?

If it's another ten-ish years until the next game, then Guybrush may very well start looking like William Conrad.

    (I crack myself up.)

He could've been 18 or even 16 years old in Secret. He looks more like he's in his late 20s to me.

He was probably eighteen or nineteen. I read that the manual for Lechuck's Revenge gives the time since the first game as "months". And in Lechuck's Revenge he's nineteen, and in Curse he's twenty.

He's 17-18 in SoMI, 19 in MI 2, 20 in CoMI, EfMI takes place three months after CoMI, and ToMI is 10 years since he became a pirate making him around 27-28.

Where are we told it's 10 years after SMI? I don't remember that part. I'm guessing the Voodoo Lady says something?

On Guybrush's ship in the intro, he says he has "nearly a decade's worth" of piratey treasures or something along those lines. Basically, almost 10 years since Secret.

That doesn't make sense. He lost his treasures a couple of times in previous adventures. And just because he has a decade's worth of treasure it doesn't mean he spent a decade collecting it. It could be anyone's.

I'm not exactly sure what the line is(it's been nearly a month since I heard it), but I mentioned it and how I thought it was due to the time between Escape and Tales being ten years. Telltale's Jake chimed in saying that the line referred to the time between Secret and Tales.

Oh, I see. Must replay the game myself.

Well in MI2 he is 21...remember getting a library card?
  • edited July 2009
In MI2, at Phatt Island's library, he lied, ir order to be able to buy drinks on Scabb Island's tavern. I think he's actually 19 in that moment, because of one of lines you can choose. I don't know how is the line in english, since I played it in spanish, but it's something like that: "Diecinue... digo veintiuno" ("Ninete... er, twenty-one")
But in CMI he shows his SCUMM Actor Syndicate card, with his REAL age (fooling Dinghy dog that way), and he's 20 or 21 then, I don't exactly remember.
