Season 2 probability?

edited August 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
So what are the chances of seeing Season 2 of Monkey Island? Telltale is already working on Season 3 of Sam and Max, which isn't nearly as popular as Monkey Island. After all, LucasArts did release 4 Monkey games (well, 5 with the remake) and only 1 Sam and Max. That says it all.

I've been looking on Steam's best sellers list and ToMI was number one for a good number of days and it's still in the top 10 two weeks after the first chapter's launch. The next chapters will probably bring it back to the number one spot again and again. :)

Now I'm not looking for a definitive answer, as this would be impossible right now. Just a slight indication if Telltale would be interested in continuing the franchise after ToMI, or was this just a one time deal?

Yea, right. The guys who cancelled two adventure games five years ago because of "current market conditions"? (That press release will haunt me forever)

All of the geniouses behind the adventures have long left the company. It's only a matter of wanting to put out another season with Telltale. And by the looks of it (with the attention that MI has been gettin lately), I see no reason why not to.

Well, i did read somewhere about there being a posibility for new adventure game releases if the SE goes well.

I read that they were interested in making more REMAKES, not new adventures. They dont have the people to do brand new stuff. Are you sure they weren't talking about remakes in that article?

Producer Craig Derrick, in response to a question asking about a possible LeChuck's Revenge remake, stated that "at this time we have no plans for future updates". The feasibility of a further remake would be considered according to three factors: sales, reaction, and attraction. If the Special Edition sold well and was popular with fans, Derrick not only hinted at more remakes but new original adventures:

"If [old and new fans] show up, enjoy the game and want to see more then I think we'll be on the right path to not only do more updates, but all new adventures.

All right then. But is Telltale interested in continuing with a second season of Monkey Island?

And by the way, just because he said about new adventures, doesn't mean that they will be made in-house. They could very well continue the relationship with Telltale and only get involved in marketing and publishing the DVDs. As I have said earlier, they don't have people who make adventure games.

I think the only way there will not be a TTG ToMI season two is if Lucasarts wants to make a new game themselves...

    But what do I know?

    Yea,

Im fine with telltale continuing Monkey Island just though it would be good if lucasarts could bring one out again, maybe the one thats meant to be before tales, also if the secret of monkey island is ever revealed, they said its up to Ron Gilbet to reveal it, so i guess he will have to be involved in that game.

Relax, guys. Season one barely came out. Wait a little while before you go asking about Season two.
This is exactly what happened when they told us there was going to be a Season three of Sam & Max. People started asking about Season four and Season twenty-two.
Just wait until they're done with Season one, then press them with questions. ;)

Greedy b4st4rd! Ask for it in another 4 months time, after the completion of ToMI. :D
can't help but put in the insult. nothing personal.

Anyway, I think it is unfair to compare MI with S&M. Steve Purcell works with TTG, so it is much easier to get input from him to put out more stories for sequels after sequel. And unlike Monkey Island, which is constantly put into comparisons to other pirate games, movies or literatures, S&M do not have the constraints of the real world or the fear of copying other franchises. These really favour S&M to come out with the most outrageous storyline, focusing on pure humour. I mean, can you imagine a story of Guybrush with giant robots, crappy arcade machine, aliens, time travelling mariachi, bermuda triangle or even a giant ball of twine?

I'm not saying that S&M creative process is easier. But it does have some grounds that favour them from making the game look old. If MI comes out too fast and furious, it might end up like Pirates of Carribean. Most won't be all that excited after the first two episodes, other than seeing Orlando Bloom or Keira Knightly.

You greedy b4st4rd! Have your cake and eat it first! :P

I personally like to speculate on what is the colour of underwear Guybrush is wearing, what cologne LeChuck is using now that he is human, and when will the chicken with the pulley in the middle make its appearance. Then again, I'm weird. :D

It'd be as unbelievable as a Mortal Kombat parody.

the first one and if you are wondering Lechuck's ship is made from Pennantia baylisiana trees..... and he wears only Fendi official pirate clothes.

You know what bothers me? The great LeChuck model ADVERTISED EVERYWHERE on site and the fact we're never going to see it again in all likelihood. Human LeChuck seems...cuddly. I want a vicious, evil LeChuck who would torture puppies and punt cats into blenders. That's the only thing about the series that concerns me. I love human LeChuck as a concept.

I'm hoping he lives up to the prior incarnations. It might not have been wised to go with a sissified version (even if hidden) after the EMI complaints about LeChuck working for Ozzie as henchman.

Did LeChuck own any ship? I remember him commanderring his ship in SoMI on his first appearance.

Hmm... LeChuck on the Dainty Lady would have been great...

    It's pink.

Well, the question is if Telltale WOULD BE INTERESTED in continuing with the Monkey Island franchise. Any other questions, like WHEN will it come out or WHAT will it contain are way too early. But it's reasonable to ask about the willingness of the producers to give us some more swashbuckling adventures. They already said that making a Day of the Tentacle series is "feasable", so they could say the same about a Season 2 of Monkey Island.
  • edited July 2009
If Tales Season 1 is a critical and commercial success for both TTG and LucasArts – (Which is looks like it will be) It would seem a certainty that they would produce Season 2, surely?

The whole business model of producing episodic games lends itself to multiple seasons.
  • edited July 2009
Well, as many of you have stated already it'd very much depend on the deal they made with LucasArts who have brought out SoMI:SE, which is selling well. Now either LucasArts can decide if they want to (start?) work on another Monkey Island game or perhaps extend a contract with Telltale incase they would decide they want to make further games.

But up to their willingness... well, they certainly seemed to enjoy making it, so that doesn't seem like a problem at least.

It's all about the sales and their relations with LucasArts at this point I'm guessing.

Nothing against Telltale games, but I wish to see the next MI installment to not just be another setting within the same game engine. The past MI games have been different from the other, and I want to keep it that way for a newer experience. That being said, all MI content is good content.

As for OP, I do think there will be a season 2 if they get the rights considering that it seems many people are buying this game. It would be nice to see some sales comparisons, as I believe MI is much more popular than Sam & Max.

Agreed with the second part, not so much with the first one. Change is not always good. For example, I wish they would have decided on a look for Guybrush, instead of dramatically changing him in every game. It's like you're not even playing with the same character. Tales tried to put together a little bit from all of the models, so that everyone would be satisfied. And look at Sam and Max seasons 1 & 2 and you can see that there really isn't a need to poke around with the games too much.

And I certainly hope there will be a season 2 of MI. They would be able to take all the good things about the first season and tweak it to make it the best Monkey Island yet.

I just think the same. All depends on Lucasarts: if they would give permission to continue the Tales of MI series i´m sure that TTG will do it.
  • edited July 2009
TTG seem to be doing a great job with the franchise so far and I won't mind them doing a second season. In fact, I think when it comes to adventure games, LucasArts have lost most of their credibility over the years. Even with MI:SE, you can see the wet paint and hear the sound of counting revenue.
So yeah, given TTG's way of making games and great team, I'd rather have them doing the next Monkey Island game.

I dunno, I like that. He's still got the same basic design, blonde hair, ponytail, but he's not wearing exactly the same suit and facial hair in every game.

The only really major change between games is his height, but the Special Edition is trying to normalise it, for better or for worse.

Personally I'd like to see a prequel to tales, showing how guybrush got back up from the mellee cliff (is that how you spell it?) and how lechuck got his ego back. It's not entirely necessary but it would be nice to see.
  • edited July 2009
I'd imagine it'd involve Elaine waking up to find Guybrush stepping out of the shower, and it's revealed that they're still on their honeymoon boat and the events of Escape were just a dream.

Not saying Excape was a bad game, I enjoyed it at the time, but I guess it'd make the canon a hell of a lot easier to deal with if it was retconned away.
  • edited July 2009
yeah i never liked the ending with the big giant monkey robot ... we have been inside the mouth of the big giant monkey head before and then turning it into a robot just ruined it.
That needs to be retconned away defiantly.
Cause if the Giant monkey head did have something to do with Ron gilberts version of the true secret.... well then Lucasarts just ruined it didnt they.
IIRC ron gilbert only had 3 monkey island games in mind.

    Hello, spoiler tag?

Anyway, maybe someone from Telltale could post here and let us know what their opinion is on this subject.
  • edited August 2009
I think I support Telltale more than I support Lucas Arts. Telltale brought back the genre; whereas Lucas Arts abandoned it years ago. The last Lucas Arts game I bought was Knights of the Old Republic and Lucas Arts didn't even develop it. I can't remember the last game I bought from them that they actually developed.

Agh my eyes!! I never finished EMI!!! I was planning to play it while waiting for the next Tales episode. (after I finished the other 3 games)

I can't blame you for not spoiler tagging a 9-year-old game, though.

One adventure game. Full Throttle wasn't an adventure.

And those guys are no longer at the company, hopefully because they died in a fire. If they were still there, we wouldn't have Tales of Monkey Island. And if ToMI does well, I wouldn't be shocked if Lucas wants to do something more with the brand. Whether that's a new season or a stand-alone game or what.

I wonder, if Lucas wanted Telltale to do a stand-alone retail game if they'd do it. I know they did straight-to-retail CSI games, but even those were episodes.

The Secret of Monkey Island ? Doen't LeChuck states in Curse of, that the secret is the gate to Hell itself ? After Guybrush have revived Elain and LeChuck gets them both ?
